| Kelyme09-19-04, 09:20 PM | I do not have an actual problem persay but rather am asking for people's advice that are more experienced with what can be done in D&D than I am. I have played for a couple years but in them have only played about 10 times and maybe less. Right now I am a Druid Tiefling with a wolf as an animal companion, I am 2nd level as we have started our campaign not but a week ago. We are now on an island that is mostly unexplored, and has only one town. The problem is my 2nd level character has found himself in possession of a Philosophers Stone, the problem isn't in that he has this item that can turn lead into gold and iron into silver, the problem is I want to keep it, and be able to protect it. I find this especially hard to do when I think an epic level character controlled by the DM might be wanting it, and to find out what it was I took it to the shopkeeper to analyze and he can't be trusted. As of now only one of my party members, one that I am pretty sure can be trusted, knows of this. Right now I have just found safety because I have told another DM controlled character whose level is somewhat high, lets just say quite a bit higher than mine, she is the only other tiefling I know on the island and we are getting it on so I am somewhat sure she can be trusted even though she is a thief. I think if I can know what to do I could get the money I need so if anyone responds to this don't hold money as too much of a barrier. I just want to know either what someone would do in my situation or if there are any rare or some sort of items that I would probobly be able to get that would greatly aid me in trying to protect and eventually use this stone. Being as I have no D&D books of my own I can't just reasearch everything myself. I will deal with this myself if no one responds, but any help experianced players can give me will be greatly appreciated. |
| Board_Rider09-19-04, 10:25 PM | Well this is a rather confusing post because I don't know how many people are in your party, the alignment and why or how your DM thought to give an item like this to your character. That notwithstanding why are you travelling with an NPC you don't trust? For an answer to your question first thing that I would try to do is leave the area. If that isn't possible then just create so much gold that you buy scrolls, potions and weapons equal to that of what a "much higher level character" may have. I just don't get why your DM would give an item like this. |
| Kelyme09-20-04, 12:07 AM | I figured I might have to give more background info. before I could get any good answers, but I was hoping anyway. I will answer your questions as best I can now. In my party there is a halfling rogue, who is the one who knows I have the stone, there are also two half orc fighters, one is very stupid, the other is a sex slave to the elven sorceror who threatens me the most. I have no reason to believe I can't trust the NPC I am traveling with, I just figured I had to trust someone since I figured by myself I had little chance of keeping this item safe, especially since to figure out what it was I had to let the shop keeper appraise it. I definatly realize I need to just use the item so I have an ass load of gold, but it is a one time use item, I break it open and it makes all the lead I have gold for about an hour, and iron I have silver. I am thinking on making a sprint to the nearest mines, but call me paranoid by thinking something may interfere with my progress. I got the item in a quest where we had to defeat a necromancer, after we did defeat him his body was searched once to produce gold and jewels then while the orc and halfing fought over its coin (yes I know my party is efffed up) The other orc searched the body again to find this strange jewel, since I had previously given him an embedded skull which was supposed to contain something that the elven sorceror wanted I talked him into selling me the strange jewel for 250 gold. Which I thought to possibly be worthless I just wanted something possibly important, and I guessed right. I haven't been told for sure but I am thinking that the jewel may have been what the sorceror was looking for to begin with and if that is right she could demention door close to me whenever she wants and I just don't feel too safe. What I am asking for along with what you would do, is what specific items should I buy that could help me the most of all. If you had a whole bunch of gold what would you buy to try an defeat a seemingly epic level mage, which has captured demons in her house, a dragon head cast as her bed, and huge vorpal sword is her study (my character dosen't know all this, it is knowledge I only have OOC). My character can definatly tell she is powerful though since to collect the skull that I gave to my party member, her half-orc sex slave, she came through a demention door and turned me temporarily into a pig after I tried to snatch it from him before he gave it to her. Okay thanks for getting confused just for me, if you haven't noticed it is hard to explain your entire campaign to people who know nothing about it. |
| Thorak09-20-04, 01:07 AM | Anything with Nondetection and similar things to keep yourself from being found through Divinations. If the epic-level mage knows where you are, you're dead. If you're not dead and they know where you are, there's two possibilities; they're toying with you, or the DM is being kind. If it's the latter, then you can get through by being smart. If the former, you're screwed. |
| Board_Rider09-20-04, 01:35 AM | I am still somewhat confused about how the campaign is going but I will try to give some tips. If the either two suggestions above that I gave do not work you could try these. But as Thorak mentioned if this is an epic level magic user you may be in trouble. However, the Dimension Door spell only works 400 +40 ft. p/level so the sorcerer is limited in range. Furthermore the amount of lead and iron you carry, I can't imagine, could be that much because most things are made of steel. How much gold and silver do you get anyway? 50 per pound? Try these.... 1. Try to go into town and "re-create" the stone along with a local mage and simply surrender "it" to the mage. 2. Get Teleported out of there. 3. Tell your party to help you or everyone will die possibly (requires a bluff check possibly) OR Get these....if you get the money. 1. Mantle of Spell Resistance - 90,000gp DMG 2. Wand of Hold Person(4th) - 21,00gp DMG 3. Wand of Silence - 4,500gp DMG There are more items you could get but basically if you want to combat a mage you must render the spells and the mage useless. Furthermore get some reinforcements via scrolls (think:Planar Ally). But you should not be combating what could be a 9+ level mage at 2nd level. |
| Aerunation09-20-04, 06:04 AM | 1)never trust a thief, especially one you're sleeping with. DMs love this one 2)do not get out of control with the item and do not abuse it. Your DM will find a way to rid you of it. 3)If your DM wants an NPC to take.... sucks for you. :) |
| Archangel09-20-04, 06:50 AM | As I see this, there isn't much you can do. If you are lvl 1 druid tiefling against a high level wizard whatever you do you can't win unless the DM over all logic lets you! If you had a LOOOOOOT of money and a right person to buy it from you could get Sphere of Annihilation! |
| Kelyme09-20-04, 10:02 PM | Just so I don't look stupid later on can a druid wear a Mantle of Spell Resistance? Thanks for all the other ideas though, I hope to use my brain above all else to get through this though...but item suggestions are still very helpful. |
| Board_Rider09-20-04, 10:06 PM | Yes. |
