A question about the Player's Handbook... [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-04-06, 03:57 PM Alright, it has been a while since i have played D&D but i have gathered some friends and have started to play it again.

But a question... I currently have this Player's Hand Book:

Do i really need to change my Player's Hand Book? Is there are important rule changes i should know about, or should i just stick with this one?

07-04-06, 04:00 PM Ask your friends if they are playing using the 3.0 ruleset or the 3.5 version. If they are playing 3.5, then yes, you will need to get the new book, there are some pretty large changes to several classes, feats, spells, and skills - not to mention and general clarification on several rules.

07-04-06, 04:14 PM Don't panic yet. We're playing in a good with a mix of 3.0 and 3.5 PHB's. There's enough in common and our DM makes the choice when there's a conflict.

There is an update document for 3.0 to 3.5 somewhere on the Wizard's DND website.

07-04-06, 04:16 PM Like Furion Thamior said, it's a matter of whether or not your friends have 3.0 or 3.5. Or if the friends you gathered don't have the book and you intend to all work out of yours, that one should be fine for the moment. If you ever feel like you really enjoy playing this game and want more books to expand your game, you should upgrade to 3.5 as almost all the supplements are 3.5 at the moment.

07-04-06, 05:22 PM If you really don't wanna shell out the bucks to get the 3.5 ed book, just download the update document. It's free, and tells you all of the changes. Then, get a bunch of sticky post-its and make the corrections in your book. Also, the d20 SRD is free, and contains all of the 3.5 rules, except those relating to combat and ability scores. Between the update notes and the SRD, I'm sure you can figure it out.

It is a bit of a pain though. But hey, it's also 30 bucks.

The SRD also omits most examples and flavour text, as well as most of the chapter on describing your character and any 'trademarked' names or creatures.

All the baseline mechanics are there, however.

07-05-06, 07:21 AM I've played a few, DM'd a few. I also own the 3.0 Core books, but run 3.5. If you are familiar with the 3.0 system, then the SRD really provides everything you could ever need.
