A question on starting out [Archive] - Wizards Community

09-17-05, 04:29 PM Hello all! After a 10 year hiatus from the game, I'm going to get back into it. My question is, would I be better off just getting the Players Handbook, or that new Basic Game set? The Basic Game set seems nice, but will I end up having to spend $30 more for the Players Handbook anyway? Thanks for the help :D !

09-18-05, 12:26 AM Well, my friend got the Basic Game last Christmas, and it was almost worth it. We already had the three Core rulebooks, and the only new things we got from the Basic Game were minis and some dice. Other than that, we don't really use it. The rules are very "basic"-very few feats, very few skills, very few classes, and very few races. If you're truly interested in getting back to DnD similar to how you played years ago, I would reccommend getting the Core books. Someone in your group needs the DMG, and the MM is good to have if you don't want to face 100% PC race NPCs. So yes, you would have to spend the extra $30 anyways, at least.

If you played 10 years ago it means that you're an adult and I'm pretty sure basic is made for youngians who can't quite afford 100 bucks worth the books to start out with. You know how many lawns a juvenile has to mow to buy that crap?!

The boxed-set would be nice for some minatures and a set of dice, though.

Get the PHB if you're a player and maybe one of the "complete" books on the class you want to play.

09-18-05, 09:06 AM Found myself in your situation a short time ago and i decided on the players guide. The basic boxed game seemed just too basic. The players guide has all you need in it, except dice, i also got the dungeon masters guide as that helped on some combat situations and magic items. Got the monster manual and a 'complete' book at a later date just for expanded knowledge but their not needed to play, unless your DMing of course!

you may be surprised at how cheaply you can pick up the core ruleset nowadays

of course, there's always the leatherbound, limited edition, "special" PHB (and DMG, soon)...for like 75$ individually

It doesn't have any fluff or examples, but it has all the rules you need to get started. You can find the same SRD elsewhere; some people have links in their sigs
