We are playing a Dragonlance campaign and was wondering what should I do about a sorcerer's armor ability.

This is just a side question but is there a forum for feedback when you create weapons, armor or items. I'm planning to try a campaign after the current one is finished and, I need help with the weapons, I created for the campaign

And which armor ability are you asking about? Mage Armor works just fine on Krynn.

Anything that can boost Armor Class and will not give me spell failure. I got lucky once when fighting along 3 friends against a cryohydra but I won't be lucky again so its anything and everything that can help the armor class of a sorcerer.

What does Mage Armor do?

Mage Armor is a 1st level spell. It give +4 to AC for an hour for each caster level. Look it up in the PHB or:

Are you serious? Are you are playing a spellcaster without knowing what the limatations are?

It seems odd to me that you need better AC. What were you doing in range of the hydra's attacks? You would have been better off in the back, throwing spells, firing your crossbow or chucking alchemical nasties.

Concentrate on being out of the line of fire and you won't need AC.

I thought you were talking about the feat Mage Armor not the spell. I think the feat is called Mage Armor it's designed just for spellcasters. My DM told me about it but I forgot to ask him before he went on vacation. I'm just trying to find the information before he returns so no time is wasted.

The cryohydra was stuck in a swamp but, I walked into a glue trap, I was stuck far enough that I was out of range of its bite attack but not far enough to be out of range of the Cryohydras breath weapon. That is why I'm looking for stuff that can boost AC. We have a rogue but the player is a horrible idiot when it comes to finding traps thats how i got stuck in the first place.

Actually, the Feat's called Battlecaster, IIRC. Check out Complete Mage and Complete Arcane.

Oh, and buy a nice pair of Bracers of Armor and a Ring of Protection. And an Amulet of Natural Armor.

Mage armor isnt realy going to help out your character its only +4 to AC characters that dontcast spells can get that from there own shild ..

Your Scor needs to stay out of Melee Combat and not be attacked Ever good defence spells probly be Blink Blur and other spells on that line but if your fighting Hydras then that thing should hit you even on a 2 (Inless you have REALY powerfull abilitys like 3 18's ... 1 in dex for armor and initive 1 in charisma so you can cast spells and 1 in Con for HP)

The only good time Wizards or Scor can get armor or ever Get Realy high AC is Realy late in the game where characters have many ways around your defenceive spell

Best bet is to be small hideing in the backpack of a big beefy tank warrior guy for defence or get a golem that do it for you (High Cost and XP However and very hard to do normoly)

Remeber 2 AC Bonus do not stack Nat AC Do not Stack ...
so of you get a Nat Armor Ammy or Bracer of armor or Def Ring they will not stack with your armor

only Luck Dodge Insight Armor Stack

Armor Bonus Defeliction Force Natrual Armor Shild Armor Size Armor
they do not stack the highest level one is the only thing that sticks all other forms are negited or suppresed

Enchantment bonus on armor improves the Armor Bonus thus Enchantment Bonus on your Full plate allso adds to AC along with your Enchantment bonus on Shild AC (becouse Armor and Shild Bonus AC Do not counter each other)

so even if you got +5 ring +5 Ammy +8 Armor Bracers your AC is only 28 (Which can be easyoly hit by that high level monster/warrior type characters) so thats 28+ Dodge+Size+Luck+Insight
inless you want to wear a Shild (Take the Arcane Chance to miss with spells then) Or Normol Armor (Which can give +5 Enchantment Bonus)
inless your playing with very powerfull Abilitys that will give you +8 to your dex mod (At least) a Warrior type character will be ably to have Higher AC then your own character

allso remeber your To Hit and Damage in melee or Range (If you go bow) are less then a warrior type

so by all means let the warrior type get up and dirty its what they do best

you sit back and cast spells but remeber dont over spend to many spells in any one combat ... remeber there are multibol combats a day on adverage so if you spend all your good spells on one combat remeber there gone when that next combat starts

rouges just kinda suck in generol considering the serch DC or Disable Traps for some (not all) level 1 traps is 30

meaning the rouge rolls a nat 20 +4 Ability mod +3 Bonus skill feat = 27 Fails ...

remeber you cant allways sit there and go Resolve check resolve check resolve check

its HARD to find traps thats why many people use 10 ft poles or rocks ...

i chuck this rock at the door then fling the 10 ft pole dose anything happin to them?

inless its a fireball trap or other trap like that they have little need to worrie so its not the player rouge fault its just rouges in generol ...

I think that you are misconceving the way armor works in 3.5 rules.

1)Natural armor does stack with regular armor.
2)You are correct that only one deflection bonus can be in effect at a time.
3)Force armor does not stack with regular armor, but it does stack with Natural, or deflection.
4) So if he buys bracers of armor, a ring of protection, and a amulet of natural, all three will take effect.

The sorcerer's armor ability is non-existent. Not unless you are using a variant. The standard sorcerer has no proficiency with armor, and even if they took a feat to become proficient, they would have spell failure percentages to deal with. The Battle Caster feat will not help a standard sorcerer either, due to the fact it requires being able to be able to cast arcane spells without spell failure as a prerequisite, meaning you cannot take it.

Hence, your first question has a "use spells like Shield and Mage Armor and then hide" as a solution.

The second question, there is an Equipment forum, perhaps that may be a good choice to use there? However, if you aren't able to separate the difference between THE basic defensive spell for arcane casters and a supplemental feat, why are you attempting to create a game with custom equipment?

I have begun planning out a campaign that, I will eventually DM once I finish re-reading the DM's Guide and I created some weapons that, I needed some answers on.

If I'm not mistaken, you can only take the Battlecaster feat if you have the armored mage class feature, which sorcerer does not have.

The same armor bonuses do not stack, except for natural armor. If you have natural armor, a ring of atural armor, a pendant of natural armor, and the barkskin spell cast on you, all stack (cus if i'm not mistake barkskin grants nat. armor).

Stay out of melee. Choose your spells wisely. Invest in magic items. Cus you wont be able to wear armor without the arcane spell failure chance

Dragonlance PRCs.

Off the top of my head

Thorn Knight can wear armor and so can the Warmage. Thorn Knight is in The Dragonlance campaign setting, but is evil so dont know if that helps. War Mage (not to be confused with War Mage in complete arcane) is in The Towers of High Sorcery source book from Sovereign Press.

More or less correct. What it says is that you have to be proficiant with one type of armor and it will allow you to ware the next type with a lower ASF%... But why bother with a feat when you can get a Mith Chain twilte Shirt and a Mith Buckler?

Actually it's in the Age of Mortals Source Book, and the errata for it is in Towers :).

As for the armor thing, there are many things that can help an arcane caster from being hit, without it actaualy being related to armor class. Mirror Image, Displacement, and Invisibility are all good. Alterself can give you some nat armor bonus's, and later polymorph will do the same. The important thing to remember is, you don't need armor for your defense, look to your innate resources.

Does mithral exist in the Dragonlance world? Having played there perhaps twice (in first edition AD&D), I can't verify if it does or not.

It does, sorta. It's called dragonmetal though, but IIRC, it is exactly the same thing.

Yea....Buying magic items on Krynn. Supose it might be possible in some of the larger cities, but it's not really in the flavour of that setting.

Yes mithril is called dragonmetal in the dragonlance setting. However it can only be accuired in one place and it is not "sold" only granted for special items. Getting the rights to the metal is going to be tough to get pats the GM if he knows the world.

Sounds to me like an adventure all its own. I would suggest it to the DM if I was playing this setting.

The biggest armor a sorcerer can get, without weird custom stuff, is a +X Thistledown Twilight Mithril Breastplate of Nimbleness. 0% ASF, 0 check penalty breastplate.
