| Taeldrin Laesrash02-21-05, 12:12 PM | Ever since my elf bard hit epic level, things have been going great. I'm finding loads of treasure and money busting down on various eildoers, and such. I even have my own demiplane. But my DM is nagging me on something. He says my character should get a girlfriend or fiancee. Now, I'm fine with that, but it was just kinda abrupt. I mean, I'm only 121 (And I'll hit middle age at 510)! So, my question is, should I take up the offer, and if I do, how will a lover figure into my character's adventuring career? |
| iluvdnd4702-21-05, 12:16 PM | If your DM is pushing you to get a wife/girlfriend I would consider the possiblity that he plans on using her as a plot hook. When PCs reach epic level, one way to challenge them is to put their loved ones in peril. No leveling the BBEGs fortress with epic magic if the wife is a prisoner inside. |
| mcnoo02-21-05, 12:19 PM | That means your character is the equivalent of a teenager, and he'll be as horny as hell, and being epic level would definately count as a plus on the dating scene. |
| Board_Rider02-21-05, 01:31 PM | Why get just one? You're a Bard fer cryin out loud.......get several!!!!! |
| Kalriem02-21-05, 05:58 PM | Don't Listen!!!!!!! It isn't worth the trouble. If your bard is epic level, and hasn't had a girlfriend before now, he never will. He loves adventure more than he could ever love any woman. |
| SwollenOstrich02-21-05, 06:51 PM | One of my friends was telling me about a session he was in where the same thing happened, only the GM refused to allow the player to control/play his spouse. The DM then insisted that interactions between them be roleplayed out, and couldnt be metagamed between DM and player. Without elaborating anymore, its needless to say that things got a bit weird and he decided to leave the group. I think there are some places that need not be addressed in my campaign, and a spouses/significant others is one. Thats just my two cents. Just remember, the DM could be trying to get you to bite on to a plot hook, or he could be looking to run a 'solo' session. My advice: Dont drink the wine. |

Technically speaking, that's not true. When you're Epic level, all you need do is level the fortress to dust, and then shell out a few True Ressurections. :) |

They always have the choice not to and some people like the afterlife. |

| Leibel02-21-05, 09:21 PM | 1) This has plot hook written all over it... avoid it while adventuring and if your alive when the campaign is over just say "Okay now that were done doing [insert quest here] I'll get married*" *Under Breath: HAHAHAHA No plot hook for the DM 2) Or you could take the red pill and just hire guards 3) Or you could get a wife who's also same level - that's what Melkith my 10th level elf wizard did; married a darling elf wizardess Sereska who was also level 10. |
| Callista02-21-05, 09:48 PM | This has teenage Romeo-and-Juliet written all over it... if ya wanna get hitched, find yourself a pretty girl, go head-over-heels for her, and get married three days later. Your DM will have his plot hook, and you (the player, not the character) won't have much invested in said marriage... though you'll have to do a lot of RP later on, if she buys it or becomes a nagging old crone. Heh. :) |
| Loren Pechtel02-21-05, 11:19 PM | 3) Or you could get a wife who's also same level - that's what Melkith my 10th level elf wizard did; married a darling elf wizardess Sereska who was also level 10. Yeah. I can't picture an epic level character marrying a commoner. That's just going to be too much of a mismatch to work. I also can't picture an active adventurer marrying anyone other than a fellow adventurer. Adventurers spend an awful lot of time on the road--not exactly conductive to a happy marriage. |
| CPAtheFat02-21-05, 11:29 PM | Humans, just for an example, will take 1 or 2 years to properly woo the spouse to be. Elves live much, much longer than humans. So ... find yourself a nice bodacious elven love snack and start courting ... may take 20 or so years of game time to get to the marriage part. See if your DM can keep it going that long. |
| Meshakhad02-22-05, 12:14 AM | Assuming your spouse is good, and there are no neutral hostages in there, coat the place with Holy Smite and Holy Word. |
| Rellik Laires02-22-05, 12:23 AM | well if you would like to continue adventuring i advise you to only have a girfriend don't get hitched just yet. you will want a wife after you retire because if you continue to adventure she will become a great deal of pain because you will have to stay in touch and see her very often to keep the relationship alive. while a girlfriend is lower means of relationships. theres nothing wrong with having a spouse as long as you stay commited and keep her happy with gold lol. and when you get the Gf there will be alot more roleplaying and remember something if you have a gf in game that means your dating your dm and if the party is mature enough buy the splat book called "The book of erotic fantasy" adds sex and relationships to the game and all the diffrent things you might see.good roleplaying tool if your going to have a spouse. |
| Taeldrin Laesrash02-22-05, 09:54 AM | It seems like most people here are suspicious of her as a plot hook. I guess I should have said that my DM's done this before, and nothing bad happened. But I'm the only epic character to do it. |
| gm4hire02-22-05, 10:48 AM | Come on people! You'd think no one had ever role-played. A love interest is more than a plot hook, though they are that too. Check this out: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=375344 I say go for it. Even if your GM does just want a plot hook, those are "good things" they keep the game going. Without plot hooks most good GMs get bored. |
| CzarGarrett02-22-05, 10:58 AM | First of all, do YOU want to have a lover/wife? If you do, then go for it. If not, then nix the idea. If you do go for it- see if you can't train her to defend herself. You're Epic Level, that means you've had at least 20 levels worth of enemies you've ****** off. Taking a wife means you have a vulnerable spot. However, taking a wife could help you build power in the demiplane, if its big enough. You take a wife. She's got family. I'm sure you've got various underlings and stuff. Move a lot of the families into the demiplane. With humans especially, you can now, with the occasional influx of new genes (which you have plenty of time) to breed yourself a powerful army. And, with a wife, you theoretically will be having children. Those children can become heralds and extra helpers. You might be able to send your Eldest son to a city to start trade negotiations while your 2nd son is spreading your good word by helping to defend another town with a small contingent of your army, and you can still be doing your own thing. |
| Leibel02-22-05, 12:43 PM | Okay you could roleplay having a spouse but like I said get a spouse of equal level or hire guards to nix plot hook stuff and maximize roleplaying. |
| Loren Pechtel02-23-05, 12:10 AM | Humans, just for an example, will take 1 or 2 years to properly woo the spouse to be. Elves live much, much longer than humans. (We had known each other for months before that.) While we didn't marry for a while, had we been faced with a marry-or-separate choice I know what my decision would have been. That was more than 18 years ago, we are still together. |
| ShadowDragon868502-23-05, 01:54 AM | Go out of your way to find a wild and cra-zay lover. I reccomend anything Celestial, and especially a Lillend. They rock. Other good pick is Ghalie. Or, alternatively, go to Sigil, find yourself a Good (or at least Neutral) Marilith or something. Not only would she be tough to kill, but imagine the backrubs, man. |
| CPAtheFat02-23-05, 09:34 AM | Good for you Loren! :w00t: Been married 12 years myself. Should have said humans take 1 to 2 years to woo ... typically ... or on average. Obviously there are cases of much shorter ... er ... wooage ... as well as much longer cases. |
