I wanted to make my next character a spellcaster, and was contemplating the Madness cleric domain as a great opportunity for fun roleplaying. I want to play a character who's clinically insane! Any advice or past experiences to make my friends' jaws drop? I'm looking for specific gimmicks, props, or compulsions to enhance the effect, rather than simple odd ramblings. My first inspiration to this was Mel from Suikoden III, a ventriloquist who carries a puppet on one arm and quite possibly believes her puppet is very real (to the point of heated arguments and an exchange of blows). |

Good: crazed ranger who believes that giant miniature space hampsters are among us Bad: crazy cat lady who waddles down the street covered in cats screaming non-word gibberish some tips: -imaginary friends that you really believe in make you insane but not interesting. -the skitso is tempting, but very hard (and sometimes dangerous) to roleplay, plus your DM might just say 'no' -extreme phobias of harmless "everyday" items can be interesting, like a deathly fear of spoons perhaps? (have to justify it) |

Maybe every time you see something specific, you're compulsed to attack it (obviously it would have to be nonliving if you're a good character). Anyway, talk to your DM, and have him stick a bunch of those (whatevers) throughout the campaign. It could make for an interesting storyline if for instance, you and your party are involved in a battle, and suddenly you see a water trough nearby that you must slay. "Hark! There lies the evil beast, CHARGE!" |

You can have eccentric traits like germaphobia needing to 'Purify Food and Drink' on everything you eat. Silence on yourself when you sleep. Have numerous conversations with your god, act confused when other party members only seem to hear half the conversation. I assume you're going for more of a fun insanity. You can watch the movie Braveheart, it has an entertaining character that talks to god often. |

Rogue thinks he can heal people. Delusional characters have a lot of potential.. Barbarian with CHA 8 thinks he is a ladies man. The Fighter who thought he was a Paladin was awesome. Fighter who thinks he is a Ranger. Someone who thinks he is the long lost heir of such and such. Someone who thinks he is a different race. Or sex? If you want to be slightly ineffective you could play a mage Fizban style..casting spells that are different than your character thinks he is casting in battle. Cast Charm Person while calling out "Arcane bolts smite thee". Or..a character who thinks he is actually from the 21st Century earth and has simply been transported here for vacation..and that he can't actually die because it is just a dream. Have him slowly come to the realization that he isn't in Kansas anymore. |
