This is my first post, so be kind!!

I have a general problme with the compatability of my character within the bunch of misfits on our quest. I have only bebing playing for about a year and decided to take on something a little different...I am a 5th level female dwarf thief, recently turned assassin. I am playing her very charasmatic, she wears black with bright pink trim for added va-va-voom...however, she has just been asked to join an averil cleric of heironious to help him perform extreme sanction (if needed) on a former cleric who's turned to hextor. However, there is a VERY lawful/good paladin of hieronious in the party as well...We are having trouble on how she is a) not going to be smited (maybe not a word) as she is neutra/evil, and b) how she is going to stay with the group past the immediate task which is two days travel away, when she has no care for saving anyone, unless payment is involved. My DM is not giving any thing away about how this is going to work, so thought i'd turn to you for some advice on either the assassin (amber) or the Paladin (ragnor).

The first time the paladin uses detect evil your rogue/assassin will show up on his evildar. The paladin is not allowed to knowingly adventure with an evil character and so you would need to, either

a) Stay behind the paladin at all times, thus staying out of the effect of his detect evil.
b) Get an amulet of undetectable allignment, or
c) Carry a lead sheet around with you at all times and hope you make your reflex saves.

va-va-what

Seriously though, welcome to the boards.

It sounds like this could cause some serious problems in the future. The assassin (Amber) obviously has an incentive to hide her true colour (and no I am not talking about the bright pink) from the good members of the party so as to no be the subject of the smite evil ability.
Assuming that she can stay out of the detect evil cone Amber also needs a reason to stay after the initial quest.
The DM might have some ideas that he/she does not want to share yet...
If this is not the case or if you want to contribute something yourself maybe your backstories could be entwined to give a compelling reason?

Maybe you could share what you have on your backstories so far?

This is a good reason why characters should really be designed with some DM input to make sure the game is playable.

You have a noble hero who doesn't tolerate evil and a vile murderess who kills people for money in the same group of companions. It simply isn't going to last. Sooner or later there either will be conflict, the paladin will fall, the assassin will be redeemed, or one or the other will be forced to leave the group.

Imagine a movie in which the US Marine hero and the Al-Queda Islamic fundamentalist terrorist decide to team up together. It would only last while there was an immediate greater threat to them both. Sooner or later the terrorist will try to bomb the Marine's colleagues, or the marine will call in an airstrike on the terrorists camp, and their unlikely friendship will come to an end.

Or, and you will have to forgive the way this panned out, but you started it. Allah comes and has stern words with the marine?

Fear not little dwarf, for I am sure something will turn up.

(as for back story, I dare you to tell where and how you entered the game.

No I double dare you.)

Hey, have you noticed that there's nothing in the DMG about assassins having to stick to being evil once they're assassins? So, theoretically, you could become LG over the course of the campaign, and still be able to gain levels in assassin, and have all their abilities. Unless I'm forgetting something...

Perhaps a hint to help make things better later on.
