| Meailen03-23-05, 12:03 AM | im trapped. im a wizard level 10 and im stuck in a elven prison for killing an elf! which i clearly didn't do! and i dont have my spell book! and my only spell left is a low leveled sleep spell. what could i possibly do? the dm is doing my rp in secret so my companions have no clue where i am. I split up from my party 11 months ago (Game time) and in about one more game week we are all supposed to meet up in the town of Alorh and discuss what we all have disscovered on whats happening in the world. But iv been stuck in this prison for five months and im finaly sick of thinking of a way out so im asking you to help me. And i dont think im going to last alot longer here. my fellow prisoners are disipearing one by one! and im fearing for the worst Signed A scared wizard (I didnt kill the elf!) |
| Wizard03-23-05, 12:23 AM | Wow...only a week of gametime... Worse, you really don't have any spells, 'cause elves are immune to sleep. If the elves are good, then you might be able to appeal to their pride. Go over the case. What evidence is there that you're innocent? Spend your time presenting your defense to the guards on duty. Ask your DM if you can apply your INT mod (logical, strong defense) instead of your Cha mod. Were I DM'ing, I wouldn't apply the INT mod myself (I wouldn't think of it), but I'd probably allow it if a player asked me about it. |
| Meailen03-23-05, 01:01 AM | I dont think the high speaker of the elves are good... i had 21 cell mates now i have 4... im not going to make it unless my dungeon master has a twist or theres one key im missing... can some one fill in the key? (Ill keep yours in mind wizard) |
| Callista03-23-05, 04:47 AM | Do the elves have clerics who can cast Zone of Truth? You may ask to have that cast on you. Making your save only means you're aware of the spell, so making a statement like, "I did not kill X, nor did I have anything to do with his/her death", under its influence ought to do something for your defense. After all, they've searched you; they know you're not carrying anything you can resist a spell with; and any buffs you had on wore off long ago. If that fails, or if they refuse to let you try it, then you are truly being imprisoned by evil people, and all bets are off. So: Let's make a plan. Wizards may not be very strong, but they are pretty good at thinking. Answer these questions, and let's see if there's anything useful there. You want to search your cell very thoroughly; what are the walls like? Floor? Ceiling, even? What have you got that you can use for a weapon? Can you sharpen a spoon or klunk someone in the head with a chamberpot or something? How strong do those guards look (Sense Motive should tell you)? How attentive are they? Can you bribe someone (obviously dependent on whether your character would do so)? Why are your fellow prisoners disappearing--ask around. Can you communicate with any fellow prisoners? Are there people there who are strong enough to knock out a guard, if you're not? Can you lead a prison escape (and are your fellow prisoners as scared as you are about the disappearing-people problem)? Are there fellow prisoners who know about picking locks? If so, they can take 20 on it even without tools--anything long and thin will do for an improvised lockpick. Actually, fellow prisoners might be a good resource, period; what are their skills? You may find a sorcerer among them, if you are lucky; or at least a good Rogue or a strong Barbarian who can wield that chamber-pot better than you can! Faking sickness is another idea. Do they want to keep you alive? If so, they may have to send in a cleric/adept... and if you're lucky, you can use that resource as well. If he's in on their plot, he's an enemy but you may be able to overcome him, if he's weaker than you; if he's not, he may be able to take a message for you. Good luck. |
| Meailen03-23-05, 07:15 AM | Praise the gods! (especialy Buccob) I Made it out alive after making love to a gaurd! and when his gaurd was down i put him to sleep than dashed out i found my belongings and im being chased... i just hope i reach my friends in time. but thanks for your advices :D |
| Wizard03-23-05, 12:27 PM | Put him to sleep? But...oh, never mind. Congratulations. *sigh...... |
| RPGDudeNYC03-23-05, 02:32 PM | Maybe the guards weren't elven... non-elves in the employ of elves. Or maybe just the DM fudging the rules a little to allow the character to escape. |

| was_fired03-23-05, 03:09 PM | Zone of truth does not work on creatures which succeed their will saves. Notice: "Each potentially affected creature is allowed a save to avoid the effects..." and "Affected creatures are aware of this enchantment". If they make the save they arn't affected, but creatures which are affected are aware of the enchantment. Not the other way around unless I'm missing an errata. That said zone of truth is a horribly unreliable spell since as an area effect it doesn't inform the caster if subjects succeeded or failed their saving throws. |
| Callista03-24-05, 01:40 AM | You cast it multiple times, obviously... |
| Colmarr03-28-05, 09:09 PM | The problem with Zone of Truth is that the caster does not know whether the target passes or fails their saves. From the SRD: Succeeding on a Saving Throw: A creature that successfully saves against a spell that has no obvious physical effects feels a hostile force or a tingle, but cannot deduce the exact nature of the attack. Likewise, if a creature’s saving throw succeeds against a targeted spell you sense that the spell has failed. You do not sense when creatures succeed on saves against effect and area spells. Zone of Truth is an area spell. To have a completely effective "lie detector", you need to use Discern Lies. As a targetted spell, the caster knows whether the target passed or failed their save. |
