| SD02-22-05, 09:11 PM | Grammar = win 1) Take your ability score, the number after the stat. Example: if you have Str 15, your Strength score is 15. 2) If it is odd, subtract 1. If it is even, leave it alone. Example: 15 - 1 = 14 3) Subtract 10. Example: 14 - 10 = 4 4) Divide by 2. Example: 4 / 2 = 2 5) If it is positive, put a + in front of it. Example: the modifier for Str 15 is +2. That's your modifier. The lowest possible modifier is -5 (for a score of 1) and there is no maximum. |
| Zee'Tah02-22-05, 09:31 PM | Ability score mods are very important in the game. They are explained on pages 8 to 11 in the PHB version 3.5. They are set up as seen in the books. Basicly, 10 and 11 are average. someone with less than 10, charisma for example, is generaly less friendly and would do worse than a normal person. Someone with a higher charisma would be more friendly and speak more enthusiasticly. Whenever you have a situation that someone who is gifted with a certin talent would excell you would use them. Heres how the numbers work. For every two points above 10 a character has they get a +1 bonous (the modifier), -1 for every two points below 11. Ability Score_____ Modifier 0_______________ N/A 1_______________-5 2-3_____________-4 4-5_____________-3 6-7_____________-2 8-9_____________-1 10-11___________+0 12-13___________+1 14-15___________+2 16-17___________+3 18-19___________+4 20-21___________+5 Ect... Now how to use these. If you do a check, for example a strength, because the wall are moving in on you and you want to stop them. You roll a d20 and add your strength (str) modifier (mod) to it. if the toatle meets or excedes the Difficulty Class (DC, how hard it is to sucede) The wall would stop. Example: the walls are closing in. Tordek (fighter) has a Str of 18 and Mialee has a Str of 8. Mialee first trys to use stop the wall, (DC 19) and roles an 19, but she has a Str of 8, so she adds negotive one to her role ending up with 18, and the wall keeps comming. Tordek roles a 16, and adds his +4 bonous, getting a toatle of a 20. and could stop the wall. All Abilities are important and are used for things other than regular roles. Str mod is added to your meele attack (swords, clubs ect.) for both damage (damage role) and accuracy (attack role). Dexterity mod is added to your Armor Class (AC) and attack role of range weapons. Constitution is added to your hit points (HP) at each level (minimum of one hit point per level even if you have a negotive mod) Charisma is used for talking and changing peoples attitude, as well as several other modifyers for Bards and Sorcerers Wisdon is general awareness, and for Spell mod of Clerics, Druids, Palidins and Rangers. Intelegince is used your memorization and logic capacity. It determins Spell per day bonous for Wizards. of course there are many other uses for the mods but those are the basics |
