I haven't seen any reference to penalties about that, so it could be pointless to carry a bedroll, right? except for proper rp-ing, of course... What other equipment could be necessary? Soap perhaps? A torch?... |

We have found a use for them to carry large amounts of gold, or injured friends. Every item in the book is useful in some way. We were playing 1st level characters, one guy was taking a bath in a stream. The rest of the group met a new character (player who joined later in the game) and then left him in the camp while we did stuff out in the woods. The guy came back from taking a bath, found a stanger in camp eating food, and threw his bar of soap at him. Scored a critical and knocked him unconcious. It was probably the funniest thing that happened in that game. So, yes soap is useful... I know some people who pick equipment based off of previous D&D sessions they have been in. I normally pick stuff based on character. I normally always have at least one torch (unless I am playing something with darkvision), a mirror (because everyone cares about their looks), rope (because I carry rope in my car, shouldn't a fantasy guy carry some rope), flint and steel (because you need to light fires and just because I may have survival doesn't mean I have to do it the hard way every time), waterskin (for when I get thirsty, logically they only hold a days worth of water and so worthless but they add flavor), food rations (so I can eat no matter what), and a backpack to carry it all. A lot of people say crowbars, chalk, and similar things which are useful when adventuring. If my character is a thief he probably has a crowbar. If my character has some climb skill he probably has chalk. That's just the way I see things... |

| jnrhayz09-24-04, 02:00 PM | Climbers use ground chalk to put on there hands to keep them dry so they don't slip and fall. In my younger days I used to free climb. So, in my mind I link chalk and climbing. I sure there are other people who use chalk... Teachers come to mind ;) and spelunkers (cave explorers) used to use chalk to mark their passage through a cave, but I think they use high tech GPS devices now as leaving chalk is bad for a cave environment (of course this is a good reason in a fantasy setting to have some). Other than that I can't think of any professions or hobbies that use chalk. |
