I'm not sure if this has been posted elsewhere, and if so I apologize. But we've seen the argument for AC vs. HP. Now I present another debate: Armor Class vs. Damage Reduction. Using the Unearthed Arcana rules allowing a person to substitute a certain amount of Armor Class for Damage Reduction, which would you take? A higher Armor Class but you take full damage, or you resist some damage but get hit more often?

I play characters with crappy AC anyway. If I get attacked, I get hit. DR for me, please.

DR for Armor is good.
In one of the campiagns i play in we get DR for Armor inaddition to AC bouns but its a high power campaign setting and we need DR and even then... people die alot.

at higher levels it is generally harder to get an AC that is high enough not to get hit (meaning costlier and at the loss of other abilties). AC is going to be more important, but it's probably more effective to look for good DR.

are there any optional rules for armour only providing DR? I've always thought this makes sense, since armour would do better against weak attacks (ie the DR removes a significant % of damage) and worst against big powerful attacks like getting hit by a catapult (the same DR is less % of the damage)

i'd go DR over AC.

It might end up following with the star wars rules that make armor a bit more realistic. I don't know the exact rule, but it does sound like DR would make a more realistic experiance.
