is there a specific class that can become liches only? or is every (evil) caster class able to transform into a lich? If i were to be a caster, i'd likely be a sorceror, but lichdom is very much so attracting me..but i don't wanna be a wizard, and don't plan to play much outside the core rulebooks (in this case, phb, dmg and mm 1 and 2) and little to none homebrew rules

By the SRD, it seems any character who meets the requirements to create a phylactery (caster level 11th, Craft Wonderous Item) can undergo the "unspeakable" rituals to become a lich. So you can have sorceror liches, warmage liches, bard liches (teehee!) and so on.

In Heroes of Horror, there's a class called the Dread Necromancer, who at level 19 gets Craft Wondrous Item solely for the purpose of crafting a phylactery for her 20th level ability of becoming a lich. So, if you were willing to use this one book, everything's preplanned for you. If not, then any class can become a lich. In the Libris Mortis, the example lich given is an 11th level adept kobold and he's supposedly the weakest lich in existence. If adepts can become liches, I believe anything can.

All creatures that meet requirements (caster level, and creates phylactery) can be one.

Dread Necromancers can become Liches without being evil at level 20 (Alignment non-good).
But most people must be evil.

Unless you have Monsters of Faerun, which has an entry about Good Liches, which include the Archlich and the Baelnorn.

I've always wanted to see a Palidan Lich.

Palidan: *turning an undead* "Feel Pelor's Might, foul, unnatural creature!!!"
PC2: "Umm, he's no more unnatural than you are."
Palidan: *oblivious to PC2* "May Pelor's light burn your- Ahhh!" *runs away*
PC2: "Did you just turn yourself?"

Paladins can't become liches, as the process to become a lich is unspeakably evil.

A paladin can indeed become a lich, however he would become a fallen paladin and wouldn't be able to atone because atonement only works on living creatures. A paladin is completely free to do evil deeds he's just punished for them.

i said it was POSSIBLE >< no paladin lich can atone, imho, but that really is up to the DMs discretion in every single case. Undead are always seen as evil, except for the occasional ghost of a deceased person seeking to end his business on the material plane and be away from it. This would lead to the paladins ultimate destruction at the hands of adventurers, although some twists in the story might reveal an npc palalich to be good aligned :o these might be some good and interesting plotdevelopments ^^

I believe that the prerequisite used to be the ability to cast Contingency (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/contingency.htm). Because dying is part of the ritual, you would otherwise need help finishing the reanimation process.

Contingency is a level 6 spell...hence CL 11 for Wizards and CL 12 for sorcs.

Anyway, pretty sure that's why caster level 11.
