Hey,

I'm going to be making a character in a setting where ground is apparently quite rare. The DM is doing some custom stuff with races to allow everyone to fly. (the base race are effectively LA +3, so that's a LA - 3 - sort of - to everything else)

My big question is: how are the standard party roles effected by everyone flying? What differences will there be in tactics? I imagine it may be harder for the party meat shield to defend the party glass cannon.

Any help I can get on novel tactics and cool builds will be very much appreciated

Edit: I'm not 12, I swear. I'm just addicted to spellcheck

Arial is a font type. Aerial is the word you're looking for. ;)

Sorry, I don't have any constructive ideas. I do, however, have a destructive one: Excessive aerial combat can get difficult to manage and boring. Boring, because there are no objects around to make combat interesting -- like a big rock for concealment, doors to obstruct vision, brush to inhibit movement, benches for higher ground... you get the idea.

Flying is great for having an advantage over the non-fliers. But, if everybody is flying, it just gets (dare I say:..) one-dimensional.

well it seems like there's an opportunity for interesting uses of grapple and other things. I never used terrain much myself. But there not being a ground is quite a big feature, and I was thinking there might be advantages to be had.

Anybody else thinking up ways to convert to D&D the adage "the enemy's gate is down"? I'm already envisioning some kind of bladed/spiked armor for my legs and boots so I can fight on my back with my feet toward the enemy. Makes sense. Keep my favorite organs away from my opponent. Useless from a stats point of view, but you might score some cool roleplaying that way.

from an RP standpoint your exposing major arteries to damage more so than standing (i dig the ender reference though)

anyway. rogues would have a field day, flanking would get alot easier and swarms more dangerous, since you can now be surrounded by 26 people.

air spells are more effective (gust of wind now matters).

It might be difficult to have heavy-armored front-liners, since heavy armor could prevent flight. A meat shield would become more something with tons of HP.

Depending on the maneuverability class (sp?), you might have to spend at least a move action each round to maintain flight; spellcasters would be limited to Standard Action spells, or spend the round falling if they cast a full round spell...

I second the "difficult to manage". The third dimension adds a lot of paperwork when you can't just say "well, he's got a ten feet reach, so I'll hover 15' above ground for the rest of the combat.", but actually have to manage heights for every single combatant.
