Hello to you all, I'm new on the forum. Hope to stick around for a while.

Well, we started a new campaign a while ago and the first plot trigger was some NPC coming up to the individual PCs (who haven't met yet) and requesting their expertise(basically whatever their craft or profession was). So after that we all kind of looked at each other and wondered, now what?
In between plot triggers and events what is a PC to do? I came up with a small list of possible ideas.

-Hunting
-Setting up traps
-Gathering food
-Practising your craft or just doing it to make some gold
-Exploring
-Buying new items/weapons/armour
-Making contacts with some NPCs

What else though?
And what can you do while someone else is 'having a turn' or basically when the DM is busy.
-Flip through the books
-Plan out your turn
-Plan your next level

Any ideas?
Thanks.

Eah...

...it's common curtousy to head out and perform whatever action the NPC requested (assuming you accepted it). Go out and explore the world, talk to people etc.

I'm not sure what the NPC in this case asked for, but usually requesting for something epic-ish (defeat the dragon, save the princess etc) works. And if you make the dragon/rescueing the princess out of reach for the moment, it gives characters something to strive for.

This means the DM/GM can fill up the levels between getting the quest and full-filling it with minor sub quests and from that point onward, you have a campaign on your hands.
