Core books only
Probably starting out 1st Level/28pb (or maybe 2nd Level/25pb)
I'm assumming Max gold per class at 1st, or Max gold for 2nd Level Characters

Here is what I have based on the 1st/28pb

Dwarven Fighter
STR 17
DEX 13
CON 16
INT 10
WIS 10
CHA 6

Toughness, Weapon Focus: Dwarven Waraxe

Progression over the next 3 levels to Fighter 4

Thoughts? Suggestions?

My intial vision for Malto is that he's a typical Dwarf; martially skilled and monetarily motivated. He wants to break some necks and make some bucks. He's not Good, but he's not Evil either. He's not into Chaos and the whole free-spirit hippy thing, and personal codes are okay when they're not too inconvienient.

He's not a jerk, he's just your classic Neutral Adventurer.

I am assuming you plan on going Dwarven Defender. If so then the only thing I can see is you might want to switch you dex and int. Sure you'd be wanting on Dodge, but you can have Combat Expertise and I think that would be a better Tank type of feat, especially if you can get you're allies to use that aid another action to give you a attack.

If you could you any non-core material though I would suggest Improved Toughness, it isn't as good as toughness at levels 1 and 2, but after 3rd level it is much better. I haven't gotten a copy of the PH2, but I have heard that there are some really good feats in there as well.

Well, I wasn't really angling fro Dwarven Defender and after posting on the CO boards I have quickly been disabused of the notion to take Toughness.

In it's place I am thinking of Dodge, because I do indeed have that 13 Dex.

And the CO guys have poopooed(sp?) Dodge, and that does make sense. I'm not really looking to get into Mobility and whatnot.

Combat Reflexes isn't a bad choice, course I could swap Dex and Int and go with Combat Expertise...

Too many choices (even with frikken Core) Heh, yeah, I said that!

OK, good the CO boards got you away from toughness. Is there a reason that you did not take power attack, and add cleave at 2nd?? Always one of my favorites.

Dodge works OK, but if you are tanking cleave can be very usefull when you get mobs of not so tough badguys.

I had thought that Power Attack might be good at 2nd level, but I ahd completely discounted Cleave.

Hmm, Cleave...

Another option I like depends on either multi-classing, or hopeing for a dex adding MI. That is pick up TWF, then improved bash. For a dwarf this lets you have the option of TWF or not based on what you face, but still keep good AC.

Do you have any idea of what oposition you will be facing??

And yes that was an odd comment from you considering that other thread... :) but hey every game has its own good and bad.

This is one of the reasons it is good to sometimes go back and do just core. We can get so wrapped up in newer stuff that it is easy to forget that there is good stuff in the PHB.

Thanks, interesting exercise, no angry posts and a good bit of fun.

Go for Dwarven Defender.

Best. Tank. EVER!

For your feats, I would advise weapon focus (dwarven axe), and power attack.

Like I stated on the other thread.

"Whirlwind Attack" As all of the Feats are usable, in a straight up fighting way, it is not much of a stretch.

A Dwarf with Whirlwind Attack and a Dwarven two handed Waraxe is a weed whacker.

Oh this is honestly the best part of the game for me, and yeah angry posts are no good.

Okay, so I think I'm sold on PA at 1st and Cleave at 2nd. That's just plain good fun. Best of all, this doesn't change Malto's outlook in the slightest and in fact it make perfect sense give the idea that he likes to break necks (via a nice long swing...)

4th level is Weapon Specialization, so that's already considered, but what to do with that General feat at 3rd? Hmm...

Dammit - the Dwarvish Weed Wacker has merit all it's own, but it would require some playing around with attributes.

EDIT: about Dwarvish D - man those requirment feats are lame! Oh well, gotta give a little to get a little I guess.
