Alternative to Special Mount, please [Archive] - Wizards Community

04-14-06, 09:53 AM I've decided to try a Gestalt campaign as a Soulknife / Paladin, aiming for Illumine Soul. But it occurs to me that RP wise, a Special Mount may not fit in (how many psionic characters have mounts?). I'm also not yet completely sold on the Special Mount.

So what other options are available? I've vaguely heard of some Ancestral Weapon option, but I don't know where to find it, and I doubt a Mind Blade can be one (unless my character is from a long line of Soulknives).

Any other options?

04-14-06, 02:44 PM A mind blade is created by its wielder and vanishes when its user stops wielding it. Therefore you can't make it an Ancestral Weapon, as you cannot pass it down to your descendants.

See if your DM will go for a Holy psicrystal. Have it give +2 to Sense Motive, Knowlege(religion) and Diplomacy(with good creatures only). It should appear in the shape of your deity's holy symbol, and should count as a Divine Focus. At level 8 let it function as a Phylactery of Faithfulness, and at level 14 let it also work as a Phylactery of Undead Turning. (Perhaps as a 1/2 strength PoUT at 11th level?)

If you have a Holy psicrystal, you may not also have a normal one, nor a special mount. If you lose your paladinhood for any reason, your Holy psicrystal will shatter. You may not "improve" a Holy psicrystal with Bully, Coward, Liar, or Sneaky.

I may clean this up and put it on the Equipment board. Or would it be Monsters? or Feats? In any case, what do you think?

And by the way, I do realize a Mind Blade cannot literally be an ancestral weapon. I just wondered if a kind DM might rule that if a family has a long, long line of Mind Blades, always enchanted the same way, then it might be allowed. (Mind you, I still don't know if this is any good: I don't know the source or what benefits it offers. I just heard of it in passing).

04-14-06, 03:59 PM Sorry, no book; I just created the idea when I saw your post. As I said previously, I'll be cleaning it up for posting on the boards, as soon as I can figure out where. When it's all PEACHed and its balance checked, you can show the thread to your DM. If he liked your gestalt, he should approve this.

And yeah, I see where you're going with the ancestral mindblade thing. You couldn't do it with the AW feat as written, but maybe you could write up a feat to do something similar. Possibly a series of feats, since you couldn't spend GP or XP on the mindblade due to its temporary nature.

04-14-06, 04:08 PM I don't think you should get much. Sure, a Mount is a benefit sometimes, but it also is useless sometimes. Thus, you shouldn't get much for it. However, a Familiar is sometimes exchanged for a mount, or an animal companion.

04-15-06, 01:24 PM I also remember something from 1st ed about a blessed set of armor,being an alternitive to a holy sword,see if your dm will give you a useful set of armor with the same gp. value as the holy sword/ancestral weapon?

04-18-06, 06:21 PM Is there any sort of morale-based alternative? Like an opposite of the Hexblade's Aura of Unluck (which gives foes 20% miss chance)? Like +1 to all allies on attack roll/saves/damage/whatever (probably just one of them)? I can definitely see a paladin as that type (go look up paladin in the dictionary and I think you'll see why).

I mean, shouldn't a divine warrior/knight be inspiring in battle?
