Okay, I know I'm a bit of an A-hole (okay I'm more then a bit of an a-hole) but I really think DM in my former group might be a terrible DM.

The DM started running the old Warcraft supplement from Swords and Sorcery (terrible book running off the unrevised third edition), more specifically the horde side and well I was having major trouble trying to create a character but I finally settled on one that had natural weapons. When I go to apply my dex bonus to my attacks for taking weapon finesse he told I couldn't even when I tried to point out natural weapons class as light weapons, and he's explaination is "I'm the DM!" Another thing is he changed how magic works saying that all of it happens at the end of combat because the rest of the group got spanked by a mage, and when I tried to figure out what the changes are were going to be exactly he told me "I'm not going to explain each type of spell!" I think he's also trying to take advantage of the fact that none of the others have actually read the Player's Handbook. I mean we do have a couple guys who are actually experinced with 3.5 but the show up so infrequantly. And there are other things, whenever I play other guys with the guy (not even RPGs) half the time he won't let me even look at the rules. Hell, the first game he was running was on a diffrent system and when I got a chance to read the rules I noticed a number of things wrong with how we were playing and how he was running it, he had completely broken the system altogether. Some of it is probably my fault though... I make a number of out of game comments during other players turns about what I would do... I usually write this on paper and pass it to a player who isn't involved. And out DM claims that I make under breath comments but I don't seem to be aware of them. As well as supposely other players of complained about me... though none of them as ever approached me about it. Maybe I really am in the wrong... maybe I just need to find a new group with a better DM.

Perhapse you should have a go at DMing if you know the rules better and plus it will give your current DM a chance to learn how the rules are suposed to be played, not hacked mid way through an encounter and with out explanation of what the rules have been changed too.

I also dont get a few of his rules
1) weapon fenese on natural attacks is actually one of the rules that dose not need interpritation

2) magic dosent work untill after combat, well whats the point of a spell cater then, and fireball becomes pointless. the onlything a spell caster can doo is heal people after the combat has finished

Yeah, I've actually been thinking about running a game. Though there is a supplement book I need to aquire first (Steam and Steel by EN World).

I think I might have miss explain how he was going to run spells. I didn't mean at the end of combat I meant at the end of the combat round.

Well thats no better why should spell casters be delaved so that the figters can knock the s*#t out of him, initative is not a class feature that selectivly avoids spell casters, if a wizard has lightning reflexes good on him, in fact spell casters often have better initative that fighters due to generaly high dex

your DM's got weird rules

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest you do two things....

1st, probably find a different DM. Or DM a game yourself.

2nd, Stop doing whatever it is that others are complaining about. Yes, maybe they haven't said anything (yet) directly to you. But that doesn't mean you're not annoying them.... So take that you've heard about it indirectly as a hint.

The DM started running the old Warcraft supplement from Swords and Sorcery (terrible book running off the unrevised third edition), more specifically the horde side.

I didn't find it terrible. It is a rather good book. New Tinker rules are complicated.

And well I was having major trouble trying to create a character but I finally settled on one that had natural weapons. When I go to apply my dex bonus to my attacks for taking weapon finesse he told I couldn't even when I tried to point out natural weapons class as light weapons, and he's explaination is "I'm the DM!"

He is wrong, but his house rule I guess. Ask him after the game or before why he doesn't like natural weapons using weapon finesse. Maybe he has a reason.
Don't ask why he won't let them, but what I said to ask exactly.

Another thing is he changed how magic works saying that all of it happens at the end of combat because the rest of the group got spanked by a mage, and when I tried to figure out what the changes are were going to be exactly he told me "I'm not going to explain each type of spell!"

Okay, so every spell's effect happens at end of round? Kinda sucky, and makes healing really bad (as enemy might kill him by than).

I think he's also trying to take advantage of the fact that none of the others have actually read the Player's Handbook.

That is bad.

You may want to get your voice checked. It sees to alk on its own.

I didn't think the Warcraft books were that bad, but that's besides the point.

Your DM seems to be on some odd ego trip, or he doesn't like the fact that someone made a worthwhile character. I would suggest trying to sit your DM down sometime and have him explain what all he is changing and why he's changing it. If you get "I'm the DM" as the bulk of his answers I would suggest you try to DM a game at some point and let him see how the rules are supposed to work. If he doesn't want to do that I think it may be high time to get a new DM, hopefully that still runs Warcraft (there's an RPG based on WoW now) but at the very least doesn't run the game like garbage.

New Tinker rules are complicated. This is probably more personal opinion on my part. The whole race restrictions kinda urks me. The horde doesn't really have any worth wild races to choose from... I get Orc, Tauran, Goblin, and Troll... and I'm not that big of a fan of any of them.

I don't see how the issues of your DM's actions and you annoying other players are related to each other. I wouldn't pass suggestions to people for their actions, though, as that could be viewed as metagaming, and consider asking the people complaining about you what the problem is.

As for your DM, anyone who uses "I'm the DM," as an explanation for anything (and is not joking) sets off alarm bells, as far as I'm concerned. Minor house rules are one thing, but making significant changes to the system is not something you should do without a great deal of forethought, because at the end of the day, you are unlikely to be the voice of experience in such matters and you'll probably just end up wrecking the game.

First, the DM sounds young and inexperienced.

Also sounds like he is trying to keep control and still figure things out. I don't agree with the changes he made nor with the reasoning behind them. To me sounds as if he should be playing to get more familiar with how things work, in addition to READING the books cover to cover to familiarize himself with everything.

As far as you...

You are for certain not the type of player that would be welcome at my gaming table, passing notes back and forth to other players? what is this 2nd F'ing grade? Repeated under the breath comments? Where as I do not agree with the DM ruling on either situation, I wouldn't be shocked if they was more confrontation than what you lead on in your post here.

Maybe rulewise you are more ready to DM than your former DM, but I think you both have a lot to learn about the social aspects.

How old is this DM? 12? 13? Is he a social outcast without many friends? Was he picked on by bullies? It sounds like to me that he is using his role as a DM to try and force people to react the way he wants them to act. This is a classic example of someone using their power of DM to prove to the world that they must be respected and listened to because they matter.

Comments under the breath would annoy me in any situation. They display a disrespect and contempt to the other person.

But I would be "man" enough to confront you on it and tell you just that!

Arguing about the rules to a DM in-game takes away from play. The only legitimate complaint can be made is if they rule inconsistently and cannot justify it.

However, you do have the right for courtesy explanation why the DM has ruled a certain way contrary to the Rules in the book.

You are not beholden to the DM. You can choose not to play if you feel the lack of rules has made the game frustrating and not fun.

Would you believe that he's in his early 30s?

Anyways, maybe I shouldn't have been doing the note thing and I'm not really certain I make underbreath comments. I mean if I am I must not be aware I'm doing it. I use to do that but I really thought I stopped doing that a long time ago (it was something I use to do when I became frustrated with someone or something).

Ask the other players about it(away from the game, as always). Assuming they are remotely reliable, they should be honest, both about whether you're doing it and if it does bother them.

No DM should ever, EVER use the justification, "Because I'm the DM!" They need to explain why they're doing things, and why the change is necessary, or not do it at all. I'm not familiar with Warcraft, but if he's making a major change to the rules like that, he needs to explain why and be certain that you understand it. If it's really necessary to make spells delay their effects until the end of the round, he'd better ---ing explain each and every ---ing one to make sure you understand it! Magic is a very important portion of the game, and tampering with it can cause it to collapse on your head, which is simultaneously polymorphed into a pig, transported to Baator, and cleansed of every spot of acne on it.

No, you aren't being a bad player. This guy sounds like he needs a lesson in basic DMing. Or, alternatively, treat him like a Steve.

I've known players to keep pushing and pushing the point to where I am the Dm is the only response they will listen to.

When an OP starts off his post with... Okay, I know I'm a bit of an A-hole (okay I'm more then a bit of an a-hole)... well you get the point.

Then they didn't use "I am the DM" as the explanation. They used it as a last resort so that the players would shut up and get back into the game.

Question: Am I a bad Player?

Answer: Probably. You should attempt to fix your behaviour so that you no longer need to describe yourself with a pejorative term. Stop passing notes in the game, it's immature. Try to avoid muttering anything under your breath, if you pay closer attention you'll at least know whether you're doing it or not. Then try talking with the DM explaining that you are unhappy with the heavily modified rules, give him your reasons and discuss his.

Be a good player. Then you won't need to worry.

Just because a player is an "a-hole" doesn't mean the DM isn't as well.

In any event, that's beside the point. You understand the intent behind our statements, which is what I had meant to make clear. They still stand whether or not the OP happens to be sharing the whole truth.

The group as a whole sounds clueless, but I am hesitant to use that phrase when the only witness we have is a bad player.

Well... atleast your honest about yourself, Alyri. Actually there are some experinced players in the group but one doesn't show up that often (I can't really draw any conclusions about it because I think one of them lives across town), and the other one I get the impression he hasn't played d20 in quite a few years.

Regardless, this Saturday someone is going to be running a D&D game (that I'm hoping is RPGA) and I'll try to stay concious of my behavior.

I'll just throw this in, since people seem to be bashing you on your muttering.

It's entirely possible to mutter and mumble without realizing you do it. I know because I do. When I'm paying attention to myself, I don't, but I'm so used to "thinking out loud" that if I'm trying to concentrate on something I can't help it. In fact, the only reason it didn't get me kicked out of the GMAT exam this spring was because nobody nearby was taking the GMAT, and I explained to the proctor what was going on.

I do have a question about the notes, though. I get the impression it's something like during Player A's turn, you pass a note to Player B saying "If I was him, I'd do this." Is that what's going on or am I misunderstanding?

Full_Metal_Samurai,

Okay, I know I'm a bit of an A-hole (okay I'm more then a bit of an a-hole) but I really think DM in my former group might be a terrible DM.

Sounds like a chichen and egg here. Maybe your DM is intentionally being an A-hole because you are (your words) an arse? Maybe he just assumed you were being an a-hole and just saves time by just always saying "No"? Maybe he just wanted you out of the group and five minutes after you left, all the house rules disappeared?

Or maybe his is a poor DM?

The problem is as soon as a player is annoying or disruptive... DMs often just react with hostility. The only way to know for sure is to not be disruptive. Try being nice, helpful, and understanding. Point out rules issues, but go with his ruling without arguing. That way you know he is being an arse because he is an arse -- rather than being an arse because you are begin an arse.

It wouldn't explain why he added the delay to magic if that were the case. (I wasn't playing a mage class.)
