I'm the only constant player in my party but I'm trying to get my two friends to start playing once every other week. My DM is my brother and we talk about D&D all the time and play it whenever we're bored and he has a dugeon ready. I think I'm OK at D&D but since I'm new it might just be my opinion... |

Secondly, you can't actually be "good" at D&D, accepting of course being a particularly capable fun-haver. (That is to say, when one is "good" at a game, they are particularly adept and achieving some goal. The sole constant objective in D&D is to have fun.) Third thing, you didn't actually tell us anything. If you are looking for some thoughts or opinions, you would need to tell us more than your class and level. There are hundreds of thousands of necromancers floating around, and each is a unique character, and further most are mechanically distinct. Anyway. Welcome to the game and the boards. |

Remembering the basic rules is a good shot too, but it's not as important, at least right away. Sounds like you have an awesome brother just writing stuff up to play whenever. Have a good time and if you have any questions ask the people on these boards. They will jeer at your sig and make fun of your spelling, but eventually, someone with good advice will come along to help. Tell your bro if he's looking for ideas to check the Master DM Competitions. Those, as well as the other contests they have going on, are good places to look for inspiration. |

Amen Brother! it is called spoilers! type [sblocc]sig in here[/sblock] just replace the second c with a k. so you get this sig in here as said before welcome to the boards! Anyway, you can't be "good". Why? because, you could be level 16, but only because your dm gives a s***load of xp, or has easy house rules, or only rolls the top half of the "Random" treasure chart( or maybe the bottom half, I can't remeber which gives the more treasure...) anyway, dnd is about haveing fun....as said before. SO basically I have nothing to add....... YAY!!!!!! see, that is how annoying your sig is. I just wasted 5 minutes of your life! |

Yeah, it's entirely subjective on what "good" is. It's different for everyone. For example, it's different to be a stereotypical "good player" and a stereotypical "good DM". Then, there are different stereotypes, and on top of that, many different variations. That covers the common ground. There are then the more uncommon variations, and the rare ones that everyone considers strange, but they love how they play, so they don't care. All in all, that's like asking if you are a good person. Highly subjective and, well, just have fun. Don't worry about being "good" if you are actually having fun. When the fun stops, thats when you get all worried and analytical. ;) Anyhow, welcome, and what in all hell is Fallout Boy? Some guy that survived a nuclear test site disaster and started a band or something? Argh, I feel old. :weep: |

| maharai2305-31-07, 07:32 PM | Any good? Well, there's a lot of hallmarks that denote an experienced character, and some people find that some are more important than others. Here's a few. 1) Meta = Bad. Metagaming is essentially using player knowledge that your character wouldn't have, and using it as if he did have it. This is usually a failing of people that have a firm grasp of the rules, but not as firm a grasp on character development and such. As such, it's not a newbie mistake, more of a sophomore error. 2) Sophomoric humor has its place. Sure, it's funny at first, but you're gonna get tired of being known as the great "Medium Rary" by 15th level. Some groups like this, and if yours does, great. If not, then it falls into number 3. 3) Play well with others. Do you find yourself on the lising side of a lot of arguements? What about the winning? You shouldn't be on either in game. Why? Cause when D&D devolves into rules arguements, it usually ceases to be fun. Accept the DM ruling, bring it up later. Also in this area, learn whether you like rich storylines, glorious cracked out battles, or a blend, and find players that suit that. 4) Rules competency. Comes with time, and even experienced players may be less familiar with non standard interactions. 5) Be prepared. Whether you're bringin' Doritos, planning a backup character for a particularly unforgiving campaign, or just playing your character, have it on hand when needed. Especially with spells and critters. That way, if clarification is needed, it doesn't take up time. The number one goal in D&D is to have fun. Keeping things moving smoothly and either being with compatible players, or learning to be compatible, these are major parts of that. So anything you can do to further those is generally a step in the right direction. |
