| cerebus12-13-04, 01:01 PM | So the DM this week was rather ill-prepared for his game, it being his first game back after a long hiatus, and he picked up his campaign withthe following scenario: "You wake up, and you're naked. You don't remember how you came to be this way, but you have none of your equipment. You do remember, however, that you have to get this magical sword and draw the blood of an elven paladin named (insert name here). What do you do?" :headexplo My my. So my 8th level Abjurer has no material components or spellbook, although the DM let me kepp the spells I had chosen memorised. I am lamenting my character's situation. I don't want to whine, I want to survive. Any suggestions? :help: |
| Board_Rider12-13-04, 02:14 PM | Well first, find some clothes. Secondly, you need to go back to your PC's family home...where you keep the extra spell book for times like these...wink..wink..nudge..nudge. It is your DM's game but to take away a spellcasters spell book is harsh. Perhaps he plans on giving it back to you in the near future? Then gather some info on that Paladin. |
| cerebus12-13-04, 02:27 PM | Well first, find some clothes. Well, we found some clothes on the tons of dead orc bodies that were lying around the cave we woke up in, as well as some armor for thems what wear armor. My prissy little spellcaster used prestidigitation to clean himself a loincloth and provide some minor light (no M component). I would go back to town to fetch my spare spellbook if I had the chance, but we have had to fight ghouls first, and haven't made it out of the cave. We did find the magic sword, and we think the elven paladin is in the cave somewhere Taking away my spellbook is indeed harsh. I got my revenge by continually asking him if we had found any of my Material components. "Any bat guano in this cave? No? Stoopid lousy cheese-eating bats!" This DM is usually pretty fair, but I don't know if I'm ever going to get my spell book back on this adventure. :tantrum: What is a componentless abjurer to do? |
| Board_Rider12-13-04, 04:20 PM | What is a componentless abjurer to do? Well my first answer would be to hopefully level up and take the Feat Eschew Materials. The real problem is the spellbook and the current spells that you have memorized. I really would talk with your DM and let him know how much of a bind he has put you in. Many of your spells memorized,I am sure, require material components and since you don't have any your DM has put you in a serious spot. Perhaps he will give you your stuff back shortly, but if not I would have a talk with him. That just ain't right to limit your players THAT much IMO. |
| Ssussunriyh12-13-04, 04:34 PM | I would tell the DM that I want to get off this railroad... |
| devinmdp12-13-04, 04:55 PM | Spell Mastery and Signature spell are great for these types of situations. Spell Mastery should be taken to get a set of 4 spells that will get you out of most tight situations. Signature Spell should be a general purpose attack spell. I recommend magic missile (this feat lets you spontaneously convert any spell into the signature spell). With these two feats, your wizard can become a quasi-sorcerer when the going gets tough. Combine that with Eschew Materials, and your naked wizard should be able to get out of any situation. Signature spell is just plain awesome even without being in a naked situation. A wizard can take utility type level 1 spells and then, in combat, convert them all to, say, magic missile! Of course, you probably don't have those feats. Sorry. I consider signature spell to be such a great feat, and Spell Mastery such a nice hedge against losing your spellbook that I'd always take those feats if I were a wizard. Devin |
| cerebus12-13-04, 04:55 PM | Well my first answer would be to hopefully level up and take the Feat Eschew Materials. Yeah... that's definitely my next feat. Now if there was an eschew spellbook feat, I'd be all set. I would tell the DM that I want to get off this railroad... True enough. But one deals with the situation at hand with what one has. It is a railroad (even more ironic for the fact that if I had done this as a DM, he'd be the loudest at the table), but I was interested to see what everybody's suggestions for how to play this out would be. Perhaps a bit more info. The spells I have left that I can cast: Mage Hand Burning hands Feather Fall Magic MIssle (Whew! I can attack the darkness!) True Strike Blur Dispel Magic Already cast Shield. Currrent Inventory: Loincloth, Longsword (for True Strike if it comes up), hobo knapsack, bit of shield with a target painted on it in his own blood (improvised material component) and some orc eyelashes (find some gum arabic and I'm invisible). |
| cerebus12-13-04, 05:01 PM | Spell Mastery and Signature spell are great for these types of situations. Of course, you probably don't have those feats. Sorry. THose are the feats I was trying to think of! No I don't have them. Yes I will get them. I guess I will have to put off becoming the magic item factory for a few more levels... :pbbbtt: |
| Board_Rider12-13-04, 05:08 PM | Here are some things to do. If you cant, or any party member can't, see in the Darkness. If you have a torch or any other way to strike up fire put this in a mage hand if you get close to the undead it may draw them out as to not get ambushed. Use the True Strike when you get to the Paladin. Use this spell on the PC that does the most damage. Of course your Magic Missles and Burning Hands should be saved for the Pally as well. Blur for defense when things get nasty and you, or a party member, needs a bit of extra defense. Thats all I got...this is tricky. |
| evangelion101012-13-04, 07:03 PM | The joys of being VoP monk.... |
| Edymnion12-13-04, 07:27 PM | The joys of being VoP monk....Only when your DM is poor enough not to enforce the requirements for that feat. Get a DM that actually uses the Exalted rules properly, there's no way in heck you'd want to take that. Now, there is nothing wrong with starting the game by taking away the wizard's spellbook and components. I started MY game that way. However, I was fair to the Wizard and basically told him "You know, Spell Mastery would be a very good feat for you to take as one of your starting feats." And I, of course, pretty much gave him a free spellbook and a reem of scrolls to fill it up to standard starting spells, and provided the costly materials needed to scribe them over as soon as he got to the starter town. Nothing at all wrong with starting the game with "You've all been imprisoned/captured as slaves/woke up/whatever with no equipment at all", as long as you don't drag it out. My wizard player seemed to enjoy it well enough. He's here on the boards if you wanna ask him yourself, the wizard player is Seeker95. |
| cerebus12-13-04, 07:46 PM | To be fair, this has been an ongoing game, and the "waking up naked" theme just started yesterday. I really don't have that much of a problem with it, except that I don't have the proper feats for the situation. My own fault for not expecting that contingency. :twitch: I just wanted to know what other gamers would do in my situation. I agree with Endy about the VOP. As written, that thing is nigh impossible to play a viable character with. IMO. |
| cheeskacat12-13-04, 07:58 PM | funny, same thing happened to me 2 weeks ago, except i was a 4th level diviner, lucky for me I took spell mastery |
| e-z0r12-13-04, 10:15 PM | Just hang out and use the party meatshields to protect you until you find some other wizard in the caves and pry his component pouch and spellbook from his dead fingers. |
| Phrennzy12-14-04, 11:33 AM | Any scroll you find can double as a spellbook- if the DM is going to be nice since he is screwing you over big time. I mean, at least he could have a wand of magic missiles or melf's or scorching ray or my god even ray of frost or chill touch. |
| Loopy12-14-04, 01:02 PM | Yeah, man. I wouldn't get too discouraged. I think your DM is just trying to give you guys a challenge and I would trust him (for now) to level the encounters according to your current situation and award XP accordingly. It is very likely that you could have great fun coming up with clever ways of being a useful member of the party. I would also ask your DM if he could let you substitute a few other items for material components for, possibly a spell failure chance or lower potency. Like charcoal instead of sulphur for a fireball might have a 10% spell failure chance and deals 1d4 damage per level instead of 1d6. If I were DM, that's what I would do. I want to agree with Edymnion in saying that, as long as the DM doesn't drag it out, you shouldn't get too bent out of shape about it. Ssussunriyh: whatever, dood. |
| VirgilCaine12-14-04, 03:42 PM | My my. I don't want to whine, I want to survive. Any suggestions? Learn form this experience. There are gobs of spells that don't have material components, use a few of them next game. |
| Ssussunriyh12-14-04, 05:43 PM | Loopy: please don't belittle me. I truly belive it's railroading when the DM goes "Poof! You're lost, all your equipment is gone and you have nothing to work with." Maybe you enjoy that sort of abuse, but I don't. |
| Edymnion12-14-04, 07:01 PM | I truly belive it's railroading when the DM goes "Poof! You're lost, all your equipment is gone and you have nothing to work with." Maybe you enjoy that sort of abuse, but I don't.I can honestly tell you, that any game, with any amount of structure at all to it, REQUIRES railroading to function. Either straight up obvious railroading, or behind the scenes railroading, the DM is always going to get his way in the end. Is this outright unfair railroading? Yeah, probably is. Is that abuse? Not if the DM is fair, and has a good reason for doing it, no. Railroading is only bad when it hurts the players. |
| cerebus12-14-04, 07:23 PM | FWIW, I think (as a DM of many years) that this is railroading, and i also believe a little RRing is necessary to RPGs. I would like to reinterate that I was not complaining about the situation (even though it does irk me a bit), just looking for ways to deal with it. Learn form this experience. There are gobs of spells that don't have material components, use a few of them next game I know that. I listed the ones that I chose. Being snarky isn't helping. Just because I didn't have the prescence of mind to only take non-material-component spells doesn't make me an idiot. When those spells run out, I am still screwed. Then what do I do, oh lord of players, VirgilCaine? |
| Ssussunriyh12-14-04, 08:13 PM | There's good adventure hooks, and there's bad ones. A good adventure hook is "You see something happening. If you decide to get involved, there's an adventure waiting. If not, then the plot hook ends." A bad one is "You get dumped into a situation, and have to pursue it, no matter what. You are not given any other option." That's railroading IMHO. It's no fun, and it suggests to me that the DM either lacks imagination and creativity, or is too controlling. |
| Edymnion12-14-04, 08:49 PM | A bad one is "You get dumped into a situation, and have to pursue it, no matter what. You are not given any other option."There's always other options, if you feel the DM is being unfair. The strongest of which is "Dude, this isn't fair, I don't want to play" and simply not playing. But being put in a situation where there is only one GOOD way out, you just have to do that sometimes. I've seen many parties that simply couldn't get their butts in gear and move in any one direction, instead deciding to just putz around with their fingers up their... nevermind. If the railroading helps get the game back on track, or keeps it from getting off track in the first place, then its warrented. |
| Loopy12-14-04, 11:46 PM | "You get dumped into a situation, and have to pursue it, no matter what. You are not given any other option." Hey! I live in a blue state. I know how that feels!!! What I mean to say is, that's the way things happen sometimes, both in make-belive and in real life. We deal with it on a daily basis. I would only cry foul if it seems to happen with your DM more often than not or if he obviously had nothing planned and couldn't think of anything better to do. AKA Lazy DM Syndrome or Too Proud to Say "We're Not Playing My Campaign Tonight Because I Had a Lot of Work This Week" Syndrome. |
| Molitor12-15-04, 01:47 PM | You might want to consider taking a level in fighter. Rogue maybe? And if you are to draw the blood of this paladin, you don't need to kill him/her. Perhaps you could convince the paladin to let you draw his/her blood, like a tiny cut. You didn't go into to much detail on you objective, so I'm trying to think of away of accomplishing your goal. Could you possibly lie, cheat or steal to aquire a new spell book? Plus once your spells are gone there is no real reason not to put on armor, even after considering the negatives. Make maximum use of your familiar also, combat, scouting, whatever. I put my exwife in a situation similar to this and she started playing DIRTY, she made blinding powder by grinding up the only potion vial I had placed for her. She also made a poison out of her own feces, by taking a $#!* in a really old helmet she found on the side of the road and letting it sit in the sun for a couple days(time was not a factor). That is the kind of thinking you need now. Don't focus on your spellbook and components because that will only distract you from the task at hand. There's nothing you can do about that. |
| Gamebird12-15-04, 03:40 PM | To be fair, this has been an ongoing game, and the "waking up naked" theme just started yesterday. I really don't have that much of a problem with it, except that I don't have the proper feats for the situation. My own fault for not expecting that contingency. :twitch: I just wanted to know what other gamers would do in my situation. I've been in that situation. It was fine. Just hang back, trust the DM, leap on anything that looks like a spell component, and wait. You've got a longsword. Use it. So you suck at hitting things. Oh well. Stick it out. Just imagine you're a first level caster without many spells. Imagine what the fighters are thinking as they don't have cool armor anymore. |
| Thoronmir12-15-04, 03:48 PM | If your group has been together for a while and the DM has a track record of fair treatment, why not give him the benefit of the doubt? Certainly he’s aware that he’s severely handicapped your contribution to the party. Out of curiosity, how is the party’s Cleric reacting to losing his Holy Symbol? I’d just go with the flow for a few sessions and see what happens. Even if he didn't think things through very well, a good DM will compensate for his mistake. |
| VirgilCaine12-15-04, 03:54 PM | I know that. I listed the ones that I chose. Being snarky isn't helping. Just because I didn't have the prescence of mind to only take non-material-component spells doesn't make me an idiot. When those spells run out, I am still screwed. Then what do I do, oh lord of players, VirgilCaine? Gee, Leomunds Secret Chest, obviously? Remember all those scrolls you should have had? Put a few in there, along with a wand of magic missile. |
