| spasheridan01-10-04, 01:38 AM | SO, the other week we were climbing through these caves and started coming across some poor folks who had been turned to stone. We set a few free and just like we thought, it was a basilisk lair. A twist though, there was some other creature in there that was stoning fools as well. Bad mojo, but we headed in anyways to clear em out and free the rest of the poor saps who were in statue form. We started talking tactics, which quickly turned into what spells to cast. I'm the scout for the party and needed to keep my eyes open to find the beaties and I was hoping for some protection from petrification or gaze reflection that the wizard or cleric could cast on me. What a surprise when we found that there was no such spell! A long story short, my job as the ever so skilled halfling rogue was to hike in front of the party and whistle. When the whistling stopped they would know that there was something nasty nearby to smash. And that's how it went. Wow, it sure is dark down here guys. Dum de dum. Hey, maybe the nasty is around this corner.. dum de The next thing I know I'm back in town and the cleric is waving his hands at me. I failed my save and sat the fight out. Anyone have any suggestions on how to avoid the turn to stone? Besides keeping my eyes shut? Thanks! |
| ksbsnowowl01-10-04, 01:47 AM | Doesn't the Stone Salve (wondrous item IIRC) protect you from petrification if applied beforehand? Wait, no; beforehand it acts like stoneskin, afterward it'll un-petrify someone. There is a first or second level psion power that protects the manifester from gaze attacks. It's called 'steadfast gaze' IIRC. As the rogue you should have a decent rank in Use Magic Device. Under standard rules psionics and magic are one and the same. Try to get a Dorje (a psionic wand), or powerstone (psionic scroll) of it. That's all I can think of though. |
| wdarkk01-10-04, 02:24 AM | Some splatbook has a spell called Gaze Screen which gives a 50% chance to negate a gaze attack. |
| Wizard01-10-04, 02:31 AM | I'm pretty sure it's T&B. |
| BlaineTog01-10-04, 02:33 AM | It is. It's been transcribed into the recent eddition to WotC's DnD main page at the end of the "Mercury Dragon" entry. |
| Sylvain01-10-04, 05:01 AM | You said this place was dark. I was just wondering if anyone knew off the top of their head, if this darkness would have potentially saved the character. If you can't see the creatures eyes, I don't think it could have petrified you. It seems to have happened very abruptly. |
| Xariach01-10-04, 09:28 AM | There is a cool gaze protector one of my PCs came up with some time ago.Basicly you take two mirrors and you position them under a certain angle and make a kind of eyegear, so that you see the reflected image of the first mirror in the second mirror.Since reflected gaze doesn't work, you are now gaze proof. The only drawback is that you get a -2 circumstance penalty on all spot checks. |
| Leagle01-10-04, 09:29 AM | They got rid of Protection from petrification?! |
| Sussin01-10-04, 12:33 PM | Why is the rogue keeping point when his just there to get stoned (petrified sorry) anyways? Why stealth obviously doesn't matter when you make noise. I would have objected and have the person with the highest fortitude take point, and i'm sure thats not the rogue. At least with a high save you might survive. Bear's Endurance would raise your fortitude even more which could save you. OH I KNOW! Do you have any one who could polymorph? Or polymorph you? Now i feel celver :D Turn into a bat! Bats don't use thier eyes to see, they see by... that sonic thing that bats do... well you know what i mean! Anyways not only would this allow you to ignor the dark it would also allow you to see the basilisk with out acutly SEEING the basilisk. Or if you wanted i supse a dolfin would work too |
| ksbsnowowl01-10-04, 01:07 PM | Originally posted by Sussin Bats don't use thier eyes to see, they see by... that sonic thing that bats do... Just for everyone's edification, what bats use is called echolocation. Dolphins use it too; it's basically the same thing as sonar. |
| exploding_brain01-10-04, 01:56 PM | PHB, page 127. Mirror, Small Steel. 10 GP, 1/2 lb. "A polished steel mirror is handy when you want to look around corners, signal friends with reflected sunlight, keep an eye on a medusa, ... " I it gives you a 50% chance of avoiding the gaze attack. |
| spasheridan01-10-04, 05:32 PM | Thanks fer the replies. We're playing 3.5 and published books only so T&B and Online WOTC articles / dragon magazines don't come into play. I did do some gaze averting, mirror looking, stuff like that. When we hit the basilisks I had no problem avoiding their stoning attack, but the other stoning beasty had a save of 21 or so. Even with the %50 miss chance I still got whacked. It was a slow day fer my group so we had a Cleric, a Wizard, and me the ROgue. I decided to take point so in case things went south (like they did) I had 2 buddies left with Break Enchantment. I think the cleric probably would have had a fort save around 15 or so with all his buffs on, so maybe we should have pushed him up front. And Leagle, that was my reaction to. No Protection from Petrification?? |
| Pongolyn01-10-04, 11:51 PM | IIRC it is Arms & Equipment Guide that details a magic item--a blindfold--that protects the wearer against gaze attacks as well as granting blindsight to 60'. |
| Aucturos01-11-04, 01:39 AM | For further clerification: Bats do see. They do not see that well (not clearly by any means, like an extremely near sighted person with their glasses off), but they can still see. True, echolocation is the main rhyme and reason to their moving about, but there are very, very few complex creatures that are completely blind. Like a cave fish. |
| Heron_Marked_Blade01-11-04, 02:42 AM | Originally posted by Pongolyn IIRC it is Arms & Equipment Guide that details a magic item--a blindfold--that protects the wearer against gaze attacks as well as granting blindsight to 60'. Blindfold of True Darkness, 9000gp. In the Arms & Equipment Guide. |
| PhaedrusXY01-11-04, 12:46 PM | I had to fight a medusa once with a character of mine in an arena battle. My character has the Blind Fighting feat, so I just wore a blindfold. To even the odds, have the casters use spells that reduce visibilty for your enemies too, like Darkness, Obscuring Mist, etc. |
| Sussin01-11-04, 12:46 PM | ok yes its true they can see, in DnD rules i think they can see all of 5 feet. But thier eco location should see far ahead of the befr that come into effect, and if you needed to yo could just close your eyes anyways |
| Lord_Apollyon01-12-04, 01:50 PM | T&B is a published splatbook... It is 3e, but that shouldn't make a huge difference. The system isn't radically different, it's just more of a "bug fix" than anything, so most T&B stuff should apply... |
