I am slightly confused on how to work out the statistics for druid animal companions. The PHB tells me to treat the Fort and Ref base saves as equal to a druid of the save HD. However, this makes it lower than the original! What do I do? Also, does its Will saves ever increase? Some help would be much appreciated.

well i know they animals get diffrent saves then druids. Animals get good reflex and fort. It says equal to hits hit dice. meaning if the creature has 10 hit dice it has the saves of a 10th level druid even if the druid is not level 10. It shouldent be lower. that is just for advancment. How could it go down? what creature are you using? base save and save are two diffrent things.

The animal companion has a base attack bonus equal to that of a druid with a level equal to the animal's hit dice. The animal companion also has good fortitude and reflex saves, and poor will saves. The easiest thing to do is to check the ranger's table (the only core class with good fortitude and reflex saves and poor will saves). A 5HD animal companion has the same base saves as a 5th-level ranger.

And how does skill point advancement work? I checked the MM but don't really understand it.

For an animal with -4 or -5 Int modifier?

1 skill rank per Hit Die.
