| pmurray@bigpond.com07-14-07, 02:32 AM | Or chinese, or any oriental-sounding language? We are doing Savage Tide. Last session, we croaked a dragon turtle and decided to raid its lair. But where is it (aside from "underwater")? My Shujenga 11 (gentle rain) descided to use his new spell - Commune. Naturally, as a shujenga he contacts not his god, but the great elemental lords (or, more likely, their flunkies at the call centers). So I began: "Oh great ..." and hit a snag. We all know the names of the princes of elemental evil, but what are the names of the elemental princes of good? So - if anyone knows a little Japanese, or chineese, what are the words for Fire, Water, Earth and Air? What would be reasonable-sounding names for my patron (a prince of Water) and some of the other elemental princes? While we are at it - has anyone come up with reasonable-sounding versions of aquan, terran, ignan and auran? |
| Saiyamantis07-14-07, 04:57 AM | The elemental princes of good are Ben-Hadar (prince of water), Chan (princess of air), Sunnis (princess of earth), and Zaaman Rul (prince of fire). I got these element names from a quick Google search: Earth:chi, tsuchi Fire: ka, hi, huǒ Air: fū, kaze Water: sui, mizu, shuǐ |
| serow_#R07-14-07, 07:24 AM | In Chinese: Earth: di (dee), tu (to) Fire: huo (hwor) Wind: feng (ferng) Water: shui (shway) |
| shadzar07-14-07, 07:56 AM | Naruto to the rescue. :D Ho (火, literally "Fire") Kaze (風, literally "Wind") Mizu (水, literally "Water") Rai (雷, literally "Lightning"/"Thunder") Tsuchi (土, literally "Earth") fire = Ho wind/air = Kaze water = Mizu earth = Tsuchi |
| FRRC07-14-07, 10:10 AM | if you wanted to posh it up a bit and if the elemental lords had their own name you could say: Zaamen Rul no kame Huo - which loosely means: "Zaamen Rul, lord of Fire" in a mixture of many languages :) |
| mearrin6907-14-07, 10:56 AM | For Chinese, instead of wind (feng) I'd go with air (qi - sounds like 'chee' or the beginning of cheese). Could throw a shi (sounds like 'sure' in Beijing-accent Mandarin) on the end to make it something like 'master of water/fire/earth/air'. HTH. M |
| PsychicKid07-14-07, 10:57 AM | Naruto to the rescue. :D fire = Ho wind/air = Kaze water = Mizu earth = Tsuchi Fire = Hi, not Ho. You're probably thinking of the alternate spelling, "Honoo", which uses a different kanji. Protip: Never use anime to learn Japanese. |
| shadzar07-14-07, 11:04 AM | funny i crossed referenced it will a few other online translaters and "ho" came up for fire as well. and actually i have learned quite a bit of japanese from anime, a lot more than i would have learned otherwise. maybe it has something to do with different dialects in japan. |
| PsychicKid07-14-07, 11:18 AM | Using anime to learn Japanese isn't the wisest idea. It's better to invest time and money in classes or a series of books to teach yourself. Also, it is "hi" for that particular kanji. The kanji you may be confused with, 炎, is read as Honoo, which I think you are mixing up with 火, which is read as Hi. |
| mearrin6907-14-07, 12:36 PM | Okay, how are you guys getting those lovely characters to show up? I know it's OT so please PM if you feel like enlightening me with a link to instructions or something. :) Thanks! |

You are right that in modern Japanese "ho" is not used as a pronunciation of 火. But at one time it was a valid pronunciation. Looking in a dictionary of names I found the family name 火撫 which is usually pronounced "Hinade" but lists "Honade" as an alternate pronunciation. And in 広辞苑 I found an archaic word, 火糞(ほくそ)....which means "dung for burning". And I asked my wife (who's Japanese) about it, and she said that she thinks the pronunciation "ho" was used for 火 a long time ago in farming-related words......(but she wasn't 100% sure). Apparently, though, none of these are common words. You can find there meanings here. http://dictionary.www.infoseek.co.jp/?ii=0&sm=1&sc=1&gr=ml&qt=%B2%D0&sv=KO&lp=16&se=on You have to set it to 国語 then type the word in the blank. |

| PsychicKid07-15-07, 02:39 AM | *Snip* Oh wow, I did not know any of that. I'm still learning Japanese myself, but I guess you learn something new every day. Thanks for clearing that up. |
