| Venion11-18-07, 12:09 AM | We just started a new game and have played in only one session, this other player currently plays a Duskblade but where we have yet to do anything combat or class oriented the DM is allowing changes before the next game. This player spent time making his own base class and wants to ask the DM if she will let him play it. The DM has had no involvement in making this class and as of yet has know knowledge of it. I am friends with this player but I find his sense of "balance" to be a bit lacking. (Here is his class: http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=954089) This player and the DM are good friends so I have a feeling she will allow him to play the class but I really do not want to play with this class in the game but I also would like to game, what am I to do? The next game is on this upcoming Tuesday. :( |
| Salla11-18-07, 12:44 AM | Before I comment or even read the class ... anything with 'Time' in the title CAN'T be good. At any rate, the only thing that will dissuade the GM is if the class will annihilate the game balance. If it helps, think of this as 'playtesting'. Ultimately, the decision is on the DM's shoulders. |
| kelvinaw27311-18-07, 02:47 AM | Get a copy of Complete Psionic and point him at the Zerth Cenobyte prestige class - it's exactly what he's looking for. |
| YamiShinobi11-18-07, 02:57 AM | that time blade looks awfully broken It's what the people of gaia online call "godmoding" "Godmoding" a gaia online term, it refers to characters wh o either just won't go down, have too many trengths and not enough weakwensses ( see min/max) overly powerful, indestrucatable, the uber juggernaught tank, the tireless spellcaster, one as powerful or more powerful than a god of the same level. the time blade is utter twinking. i wouldn't allow it. lets see, a move action, a full round action, then another move action, (see haste) super haste the class is essentially invisible if he wants a custom class check the classes forum for the mokonias priest. and add mokona as well as the country of porte fonce which is bathed in eternal night, the 3 go in a set, no time powers, just a stealthy divine caster w/out uncanny dodge. |
| leo_neil31611-18-07, 07:09 AM | Confiscate his copies of the ps2 prince of persia games? |
| Cartigan11-18-07, 09:12 AM | That class is all sorts of weird non-sense. |
| Venion11-18-07, 10:00 AM | Well I posted in his thread, gonna talk to him today to see if I can ask him to not ask the DM to play this class. If that fails I will speak to the DM. If that fails I doubt I'll play. His class just looks like it would ruin the atmosphere for me, we have a Cleric, Fighting, Dervish, Rogue (me), and Duskblade (Him unless he changes to his class). His custom class just, doesn't sit well with me. |
| Tectorman11-18-07, 11:15 AM | Let him. Worry about your character and your class. It's the DM's decision and the DM's responsibility to moderate game balance and whether or not to adjust things if the other player's aren't having fun and/or are being overshadowed. Were I you, I'd walk up to the DM and present my concerns. But don't tell him/her "If you allow this class, I won't be playing." Then the only person limiting your enjoyment of the game is you. Tell the DM that you will be talking to him/her if the player seems to be overshadowing everyone else (or even just your character). But don't just look for an excuse to raise a fuss. Give the player's new class a chance. It has never been playtested before and it will never be playtested until someone let's him play it. Who knows? If it's truly overpowered, this other player may be the first one to recognize it. |
| Venion11-18-07, 11:25 AM | I see what you mean, and I guess I can play with it for a couple of games. If it seems to be to strong I'll take my concerns up with the DM. |
| Salla11-18-07, 01:15 PM | Moderately sarcastically said here ... but if it turns out as broken as it looks, you can always go CoDzilla on his butt. :) |
| wonlee7611-18-07, 02:18 PM | The problem here is as a player, you don't really get much to say about custom classes unless the DM in your game asks for your advice. My general rule as a DM when a player introduces some feat, spell, prestige class or whatever they invented is to determine whether the group would be happy when the bad guys use the custom feat, spell, prestige class, etc. If the players won't be happy, ban the darn thing. Glancing over the class, I would say my players would be very unhappy with me if I popped a bad guy with these abilities. Some of the abilities are a bit over the top and need to be downgraded to a reasonable level. If he wants something similar to what his custom class is, take a look at the Swiftblade prestige class that's on the WOTC website somewhere. Its a kind of fighter/spellcaster that specializes in haste spell. That might be more up his alley. |
| Tequila_Sunrise11-18-07, 04:28 PM | If the DM for some insane reason does allow this class and doesn't come to realize its absurdity, make your own absurdly powerful class to play. PS The timeblade should also really be a prestige class. |
| Cold Napalm11-18-07, 05:10 PM | I posted about some issues with the class...but in all honesty, as it stands now...it's munchkin cheese. Most abilities cost too little, some are just out game breaking. You don't need to play test to see it. That said, it's the DM's call...but I'd be rather wary of a DM that allows that in their game. I play with optimizers sometimes and even we wouldn't allow that in our games (and yes we have some custom classes and PrCs). |
| Sinis11-18-07, 05:21 PM | Too many haste/slow effects. Covers far too many contingencies. More powerful than all other classes. Seriously, point him in the direction of the Psionic warrior, and I bet he'd be happy. |
| eamon11-18-07, 05:40 PM | The timeblade can be a base class. That's just a matter of mechanics, if you will. You could even be crazy enough and try to implement it as an extensive fighter-only feat tree, though that would mean you need to accept a full bab. In any case, it looks powerful, it does look iffy. Maybe you can stress why it'll be no fun to the player (namely simply break balance) and get him to improve it. It's not nice to be the deal-breaker for a fellow player anyhow, so I hope you can work it out without too much hassle. Good luck! |
| Venion11-18-07, 06:13 PM | I am talking to my friend on the phone and we are trying to compromise (change it a bit) He'll be updating it on his class thread. |
| archerpwr11-18-07, 07:31 PM | Have the player check out this (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/prc/20070327). Has huge time flavor, is balanced against the base class used to enter it, and still decent power. Great prestige class. Oh, haste is broken at level 3. |
| Venion11-18-07, 07:43 PM | He has seen the swift blade and doesn't like it. *shrug* |
| archerpwr11-18-07, 11:04 PM | He has seen the swift blade and doesn't like it. *shrug* Aww... It's a CO favorite. |
