| Talon_SilverHawk07-05-05, 05:17 PM | Hey, I've played many MMORPG's very dungeons and dragons style as well as magic the gathering card game, but I wanted to trace these games right back to their routes with D+D. So I need some advice on where to start please! I went on amazon and got a Hasbro board game, but I'm sure that it isn't the same game that I was looking for. While it offers a few hours of enjoyment It's nothing like looking at these charecter sheets on this site. Is there a basic starter pack I can buy? Or is it all stuff you need from home (pen and paper and imagination) and just buying a particular rule book will help? Thanks for your help guys and gals :D |

Second, your group certainly needs the three core rulebooks: the Player's Handbook (PHB), the Dungeon Master's Guide(DMG), and the Monster Manual(MM). Well, you will probably need multiple PHBs, and you might be able to substitute the MM for a different monster book (like the Monster Manual 3). feel free to get any other books you like. A campaign setting book like the Eberron Campaign Setting might provide a good setting for the game to start in at first. Third, you just need pencils, paper, and either the full set of dice or a computer rnadom number generator that is equivalent. That is all you really need. |
| Talon_SilverHawk07-05-05, 06:20 PM | Thanks! I've got a group of friends (well... As close as I could get) Is it all pretty straight foward from there? Or Will I see you in 2 days after Amazon has deliverd the goods? lol |
| rbrt_Spade07-07-05, 11:44 AM | so learn the game-read all the core, playout some battles to practice have fun! D&D is the greatist rpg/game/complex too in the world read the phb-this book is very important |

The DM by far has the most work, and has to read the DMG and PHB cover to cover (and skim the MM). Each player needs to read the PHB cover to cover. |

Or Will I see you in 2 days after Amazon has deliverd the goods? lol All the stuff's in the PHB, but there's a fair chance there'll be bits you don't get at first. Feel free to ask for help if things confuse you, we won't mock you. Much. ;) Miniatures can be useful, for knowing what goes on in combat (3.5 assumes you have some) although you can happily play without, and you can use tokens, bits of card, pennies etc. instead. Yeah, it can be good to have some practise battles, a bit of character generation beforehand. Whatever you're doing with the rules while having fun is good. Try not to get too bogged down in the numbers at the start. It's a lot less daunting than it might look. Edit: Oh and someone mentioned dice. For D&D you use several types of dice, which you can normally buy in sets (1 D20, 1 D12, 2 D10, 1 D8, 1 D6, 1 D4. D4 being a 4-sided dice), ideally each player should have a set of these, but you can share. |
