| sabbattack11-01-04, 05:06 PM | This must be like the third board I post this, and I really hope it's the final. I'll try to keep it simple. Some templates give HD-related abilities (for example, fast healing at a rate of 1/2 of HDs per round). In my case, the only HDs are from Character level. So, do these abilities constantly change with every level you gain or you only take into account what HD you had when you first acquired the template. So, if you apply a template that gives the above ability at 2nd lvl, you heal 1/2*HD=1hp per round. When you reach 4th lvl, will it change to 2hp per round or does it retain its first value? Please enlighten me. Cheers!! :tiphat: |
| Derren S.11-01-04, 05:16 PM | No, this ability only work for racial Hd, not class HD. So if a human has this template they get nothing, when an ogre has this template it would get all abilities for 4 HD, even if the ogre is a 20 lvl fighter. Only raciel HD count. |
| sabbattack11-01-04, 05:22 PM | Mmmm, got it, thanx alot. But, why can't I use it with class HD? It doesn't mention anything about "racial HD only". Well, I understand that this must be "thin red line" in the rules right? It just feels strange that only creatures with racial HD benefit from these templates. Anyway, what the heck!! Happy gaming!! :tiphat: |

There are only a few things I have seen that say "racial HD", because if it's meant for humanoids, it would completely suck, since they have no racial HD. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/yawgmoth/kittyjig.gif |

Those templates weren't meade for players but for monsters. For example the Half-Dragons HD increase and the Half_Fiend/Celestial SP abilities only work for racial HD. |

Ok, the half dragon template specifically says it changes your racial hit dice to d12s, so that is no use if you don't have any racial hit dice to start with. However, practically all other such abilities, including half-celestial spell-like abilities, depend on racial hit dice + character level. |

Actually, I think it varies on a case-by-case basis. For example, the BoED says that the half-celestial templates spell-like abilities operate only on racial HD, not class level. The Saint template, also from the BoEd, on the other hand, says that the saints abilities are based on the sum of racial HD and class levels. |
| Nom11-02-04, 05:43 AM | In general, if it says "HD" it means all HD (or levels). In the case of the half-celestial (Monster Manual version), all the effects use HD, except for skill points, which explicitly says that these are calculated based on outsider HD only. Likewise, the half-dragon specifies that its racial HD change to d12, and that skills and breath weapon are calculated based on racial HD. If it says "racial HD", use only racial HD. Otherwise, use all HD, regardless of source. |

However, the sample half celestial in the Monster Manual does indeed have spell like abilities based on it's character level. I prefer to give it SLAs by racial HD+ character HD. Since an LA is more of a burden at higher levels than at lower levels, there should be more of a bonus at higher levels, in my opinion. |
| amethal11-02-04, 12:28 PM | I don't have the BoED, so I was going by the Monster Manual. |
| sabbattack11-03-04, 05:37 AM | Well, thanks gentlemen for the support, but what I want to emphasize on is the continuity of the template (if the meaning exists :D ). Supposedly you take a template at some (let's say racial so everyone is cool) HD. If later your HD number rises (by advancement, let's say), do the HD relevant powers rise as well? Look at the example again. Let's say we give the template to a wolf with 2 racial HD. This gives him 1hp/round fast healing. If we later advance the wolf to 4 HD, does the fast healing become 2hp/round?? Look at my first post for the mechanics. I don't get it... :weep: |

If, as per your original post, fast healing is 1/2 per HD, then if your HD change so does your fast healing. Its as simple as that. |

Well, nobody ever accused WotC of consistency. I prefer to give it SLAs by racial HD+ character HD. The BoED gives a variable level adjustment for the half-celestial template, depending on your HD. Does this mean that the LA rises as you advance in level? I think it goes as high as +7, maybe even more! |
