| Palomides07-08-06, 11:59 AM | ************|_| ************|p| corridor====|i|=[door] ************|t| ************|_| We have a corridor leading to a deep pit (over 400 feet deep). The ceilling is 60 feet high. The pit is 60 feet large. On the other side there is a door leading to an artifact. Over the area of the pit there is an anti-magic field. Any idea how to get to the other side ? |
| KirkBb07-08-06, 12:06 PM | I'm assuming no one in your party can fly naturally (otherwise you wouldn't be in this mess) hmmm, the simplest thing I can think of is casting wall of stone away from the pit, uproot your wall or multiple walls because this pit is so large, and build a bridge. (Glue would work wonders in this situation) |
| Bohica07-08-06, 12:29 PM | Take a large long board, like a diving board (or a door from another room) and run it up to the door from the approaching corridor. Everybody stand on the board while the rogue of the party goes forward on the board (everybody should be able to support his weight with their own) and checks the door for traps and unlocks it. Once he pushes it open he can come back, you guys can shift the board over the threshhold of the door and enter the room. Based on your diagram I'm taking that the pit is 60 feet long and only 5 to 10 feet wide. If this isn't the case then my idea won't work and I don't know what to tell you... Bohica |
| smoker07-08-06, 12:32 PM | Turn around and walk away. Don't even waste your time. |
| utilitarian07-08-06, 12:35 PM | Turn around and walk away. Don't even waste your time. I'm going to assume that they need that artifact for something important, else why would they be there. When you say the pit is 60 feet large I assume you mean wide? Does anyone have a small flying animal as a familar or animal companion? Have it fly to the other side of the pit with a grappling hook attatched to a rope and latch it onto something. (This works best with a familiar as it'll be smart enough to understand what you want it to do) |
| The_Apathetic_Despot07-08-06, 12:36 PM | if you have access to a planar binding/ally spell you can call a creature with wings to either fly you over or tie a rope to the other side |
| smoker07-08-06, 12:51 PM | I'm going to assume that they need that artifact for something important, else why would they be there. Perhaps. But it would be interesting to the see the expression on the DM's face. |
| nhenrique07-08-06, 01:08 PM | It really depends on this anti-magic field. I would try casting spiderwalk and moving along the 60 foot high roof to the other side and then back again. (anti-magic spell is only a 10 emanation whih means it covers 20 ft. in total. If the spell is a 60 ft. radius sphere then you could simply use a 60 ft. ladder ethier crafted by yourselves or bought and just make sure that you tell the DM that your masterworking it for extra stability or that your buying a masterworked one. The other posibility is that the anti-magic feild is a semi-sphere starting from the floor going all the across the pit and up from there the 60 ft. to the roof. If this is the case you can have an arcane spellcaster jump into the pit and cast fly on him/herself, then to come back up using a grappling hook on the oppisite side of the pit while s/he is suspended via the spell below the anti-magic feild. S/he way then pull him/herself up through the magic feild (this can also technically be done if the anti-magic feild is an actually sphere.) then s/he may return the same way from whence s/he came. - Friendly Evoker |
| utilitarian07-08-06, 01:31 PM | nhenrique: the problem is you're thinking of Anti-magic as the spell, not as the DM tool. In my experience when a DM uses an anti-magic field as part of an obsticle or otherwise as a perminate feature of something, they're most likely just going to label all the effective squares as being "antimagic," regardless of how that stacks up with the actual Antimagic Field spell (keep in mind, antimagic areas can arise from sources other than the spell Antimagic Field) |
| Derren S.07-08-06, 02:43 PM | What level are you? If high enough use DD door to teleport over the pit or etheralness and walk around it. Souvereign glue would be very usefull in this situation. Get a grappling hook coat it in glue and throw it to the other side. When it sticks to something you can climb over. |
| Pegasos98907-08-06, 03:32 PM | Can't help but suggesting that you climb down and back up on the other side. In DnD it is not even nearly impossible to climb a stone wall (the DM might decide that it is in this case, if he is *****y). |

| Sergikins07-08-06, 03:55 PM | familiar seems to be the best idea, if not.... running jump is DC alot. maybe pole vault it? wall of force is not canceled by antimagic field, i think, so thats another idea. cmon, everyone should know its . for spaces, not = :P @..^...B...../ |

| Thiez07-08-06, 04:38 PM | That glue is a magic item and will not work in the anti-magic field. Actually, the jump DC is not that hard to make, but you need something to stand on when you reach the other side. +30 from Jump +12 from Expiditious Retreat or Haste (base speed: 30 ft. +30 ft. from spell, gives a +4 * 3 bonus to jump) +1 from Guidance +6 -- I assume you can get someone with +6 strength (at least!) using Bull's Strength So that's already a total of +49 Optional: Moment of Prescience can give another bonus equal to your caster level (minimum +15). Creative use of Gust of Wind may help you 1d6* 10ft. if your DM thinks jumping is like flying. |
| LuckyLeprechaun07-08-06, 04:45 PM | That glue is a magic item and will not work in the anti-magic field. Not in the anti-magic field, but the fields only over the pit, so it will become sticky again when it comes back down on the other side. V Beat ya to it :P V |
| Derren S.07-08-06, 04:45 PM | Yes but the AM field is only over the pit not beyond it so when the grappling hook hits the other side magic works again. |
| SoldierOfFortune18707-08-06, 05:32 PM | Is it assumed or known the antimagic effect doesn't go past the pit? I know the original poster suggested it is simply over the pit, but I was curious if the DM spelled that out for him or if it just seemed like that was the case. Sounds like the DM is really just trying to screw with the party, and see how many can be taken out as one by one your plans to get across are parried. Would help to know party makeup and resources. While it would be nice to assume the DM wouldn't give you a puzzle without an answer, it's not out of the realm of possibility. |

I know the original poster suggested it is simply over the pit, but I was curious if the DM spelled that out for him or if it just seemed like that was the case. Thats very easy to find out. Cast light on a rock and throw it over. Where it begins to glow again the am field ends. |
| kelvinaw27307-08-06, 06:20 PM | Harpoon ballistae with a rope attached. Either rip the door off so you can do the super-jump, or else secure yourself to it safely and cross to open the door 'normally'. |
| Thiez07-08-06, 06:23 PM | You could even cast light on the tip of a reach weapon and cast fly on yourself to 'probe' for AMFs :D |
| Palomides07-08-06, 07:22 PM | Thanks for all the ideas. Yes I meant 60 feet wide. Our group consist of a fighter1/cleric7, ranger2/druid7, conjurer5(banned school: illusion, enchantment)/alienist3, fighter2/evoker4 (banned school: necro, ench)/spellsword3. (Yes, we both choose to ban enchantment, but our conjurer at first did not ban enchantment, it was instead abjuration. Our dm let him change, because he was frustrated by his choice.) The conjurer has dimension door, but we're not sure that it will work. Our conjurer is afraid to try. Afraid that something will go wrong for him. |
| smoker07-08-06, 08:39 PM | Since the AM field is over the pit and not in it, you can create water a bunch of times, then control water, and swim across. You easily have the range for control water. Basically, you're just making a floating swimming pool in the pit. I would still just walk away. smoker |
| Piggyfreak607-08-06, 10:06 PM | Take a fishing net, or maybe 3 or 4, so they wont break, and use it as a rope bridge. |
| Toloran07-08-06, 11:15 PM | Two questions: How long is the corridor? And how large is the ledge on the other side of the pit? If bother are large enough, here is what you do: Stand away from the pit, cast fly (or similar spell) on yourself (and your party) and back up away from the pit. Then go really fast towards the pit. If you do it right, your speed should carry you across the pit (and probably into the door on the far side, ow but at least you are across). That might be a bad example, but you get the idea. The spells only poop out when you enter the field, until then you can do whatever you want and as long as you have enough speed you will still cross the pit. Another option is to use a Decanter of Endless Water and just fill the stupid pit with water and swim across (it will take a long while to fill though, even on Geyser setting). |
| Steidas07-08-06, 11:42 PM | That glue is a magic item and will not work in the anti-magic field. | Thiez07-09-06, 08:02 AM | Little detail: they have no 9th level caster so they'll only get +20 from jump, not +30. Moment of Prescience is not going to work either, it's a level 8 spell. Leaves them with: +20 jump +12 speed +1 guidance +6 strength ------------- +39 total So you really need this gust of wind trick (if only you could maximize it!). You also need to be reduced or you'll only get 1d6*5ft. from gust of wind (as opposed to 1d6*10ft. when you're small) It would be nice if any of you had ranks in jump? :) |
| Derren S.07-09-06, 08:12 AM | Jumping only works if the ceiling is high enough. To jump 60 ft the ceiling needs to be 15 ft heigh (1/4 of the distance jumped) and such a high ceiling is rather uncommon in dungeons. |
| Thiez07-09-06, 02:37 PM | We have a corridor leading to a deep pit (over 400 feet deep). [B]The ceilling is 60 feet high.[B] The pit is 60 feet large. On the other side there is a door leading to an artifact. Over the area of the pit there is an anti-magic field. Read, read! :) |
| CryoSilver07-09-06, 05:02 PM | Rope. Lots and lots of rope. |
| Psychoticpsymon07-09-06, 06:24 PM | Uhm, are you in a stone dungeon? Cast 'Stone to Mud' (5th lvl) on the cieling in 5 foot wide intervals along the sides. A 60 foot long, 5 foot wide pathway will fall into the pit. Repeat until the ceiling collapses or it gets high enough. (diagram from above) @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@| OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OO| @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@| Where @ is stone to muds, and the circles is where the stone should fall |

| hollow_ghost07-09-06, 10:24 PM | Well... If you REALLY want to, you know, make your DM show a nice face, well, honor Thibbledorf Pwent and his battlerager techniques :D , with just a lil'more thinking, and no Gutbuster potion :P Let me explain the basic: have the strongest fighter throw the other fighter. Now, better enlarge and enhance strenght on the thrower, while you reduce the throwed. Also better give a lance or spiked armor or something to the throwed. As the missile flies above the pit and into the AM, it should resume normal size. Tie a rope to the throwed just in case. Just a funny tought. Or you could, you know, since you, oh I-dont-know, have a ranger?, tie a rope to an arrow and shoot it across. Better shoot high tough, cuz over 60ft. of rope can be a lil'heavy. PS: if one of your mage can create a ballista... you could either place a fighter on it, or blast the door. (Never got to cast level 3 spells, so I'm not really schooled in magic.) |
| sag307-10-06, 12:18 AM | If your in a stone passge. First cast obscuring mist to conseal your chars actions for the DM. Then animated rope to streach out across the pit to make sure your DM is looking the other way then Stone shape a few times to make a passage around the outside of the problem. If your in a earthen passage (not stone) The start with an entangle follow it will a fog cloud then wild shape into a burrowing creature. |
| hughman07-10-06, 12:31 AM | Go back to the room before this along that hall and search the room for the lever. You know the lever that will either opent he door, drop the AM field or extend the drawbridge, or possibly all three. Take a 20 on that search. And have everyone in the party aid your best searcher. Then take another 20 on the same search. Then ask him where the ladder is that is used to cross it. Hughman |
| Timeout07-10-06, 09:51 AM | 1.take a 55 feet long robe. affix it at the roof infront of the anti magic field buy usig a fly spell and play tarzan. its easier if you pump out the air of the dungeon becaus of friction :) 2. you can climb arround the pit. use a robe too protect the climber from falling. 3. jump ^^ the pit is an illusion :P |
| darth_blitzkrieg07-10-06, 10:10 AM | Actually, since you have a druid, wildshape into a flying creature that can carry 60' worth of rope. Attach the rope to the druid. Fly full speed down the corridor. At the last minute pull up. Antimagic field cancels the wildshape, but the druid is now sailing through the air towards the door. Druid has dagger, picks, or axes in hand. He uses those to attach himself to the door. If he misses, the rope will save him. Heal, rinse and repeat. If you really want to get this down right, go out and practice the manuever by a lake or large body of water. Get the speed to the point where the druid is just starting to fall down instead of foward. That will minimize the damage taken from hitting the door. I'm also all for using a heavy crossbow or ballista to implant roped spikes to the door. In 2ed Ad&D, in the Complete Thief, there were rules and equipment for shooting grappling hooks and arrows with ropes attached, just to do stunts like this. I believe the arrow/bolt is the hardest thing to come up with. It needs to be strong enough to support the lightest party member. There is the long, but effective, use of climbing pitons and rope. Just spike your way around the pit like you would to climb a mountain. |
| Radijs07-10-06, 10:18 AM | Have you got a rogue with enough ranks in climb? He could use pitons or hooks rammed into the wall to climb along the ceiling and down to the door again where he could open it (hanging upside down for style points). Once the door is open you can throw him a grappling hook which can be hooked behind the door frame so the rest can cross. |
| zlatko07-10-06, 10:47 AM | In 3.5 conjuration spells work in AM fields. Just jonjure anything; wall of force or a 60ft ship(?) and voila, problem solved. Although I like the turn around and go away idea. |
| Palomides07-10-06, 11:11 AM | In 3.5 conjuration spells work in AM fields. Just jonjure anything; wall of force or a 60ft ship(?) and voila, problem solved. It's seems that my dm decided that they do not. And for the druid, befor we try anything, he told us that once in the field the shapechange druid would change back to his natural form. Although I like the turn around and go away idea. That's what we'll probably do. We will have a few gp less, but we'll be alive. But I'll propose to them the different ideas that all of you gave me. Thanks. |
| Drausktanchache07-10-06, 01:38 PM | ok this might not work completely...but it depends on if you are about as far underground as the hole is deep, or you can do the work.... first take ditherbombs, (if you can aqquire them) or else use lots and lots of rum, then grab a pickaxe...use some sort of fly spell to get up to the celing (just outside of the antimagic field) and dig a hole into it enought to place like 3 barrels (if possible) of rum, 1 will do the trick..then tie a rope to the barrel(s) and string it down, light the rope on fire and step away... this should be enough to cause quite the crack in the celing, if one of your or two of your spellcasters have ice effect spells, use something like make a glass barrel(s) fill them with water and activate said ice effect spell and watch in glee as the crack opens a little more...other than now you'll have to dig through the ice a little continue the mining up a little and angle it more towards the pit...(this is the break off part from cool or effective) [(cool way) ] then continue to angle up then blast it apart with a few more barrels of rum (it is a great drink but a much more effective weapon) repeat this mining freezeing blowing up until you collapse the ceiling and walk over... [(the effective way) ] keep mining up and over the pit.... |
| Varek07-10-06, 05:51 PM | ************|_| ************|p| corridor====|i|=[door] ************|t| ************|_| Okay, i'll try :) use light on a stone and throw it over the pit to see where the Antimagic field starts to work. 1. If the stone reaches the other end, use dimension door. 2. If the stone reaches at least the middle of the pit, use summon natures ally to summon flying creatures. Attach a rope at the ceiling of the pit with their help or the druid does it itself, then play tarzan :D If there is nothing you can attach the rope to, use entangle on the ceiling of the pit, then attach the rope on a summoned creature and entangle it. If there are no plants or like use stone shape to create a hole/loop u can attach the rope to. It would be the best if you have two ropes, one u attach to the ceiling, and one rope u attach to the first rope ( it helps to get tarzan back ;) ) 3.let the mage build a ramp. if the corridor goes down, use grease on it. let the rogue take seat on a shield, then push him and simultaneous use a rope to pull. Have fun :D 4. Get a 60 feet tree. Use Stoneshape to make a loop/hole to attach it. hope that your rogue keeps balance. maybe i get some new ideas...later |
| darth_blitzkrieg07-11-06, 09:33 AM | In 3.5 conjuration spells work in AM fields. Just jonjure anything; wall of force or a 60ft ship(?) and voila, problem solved. Although I like the turn around and go away idea. Can you point me to where that is backed up please. I was reading up on AM field in the SRD and conjured creatures will disappear if they are taken into a AM field. However, instantaneous conjurations are created using magic, and not sustained by magic. So a wall of iron will not go away if it enters an AM field. I was going to suggest (before remembering the height of the hallway) creating a 65' tall or so section right before the pit, then tipping it over into the pit. It would not completely fit, so it will be a slanted bridge. A crude diagram of what it would look like is below. It is more accurate if it is rotated 90 degrees clockwise. /| / _/___ And I know that the druid's wildshape will be dispelled when going into the AM field. That is why I was saying he should have a rope and some daggers. He is using the bird form to gather the speed and altitude for the "jump" over the pit. The daggers are to be used as crude pitons into the door. Assuming, of course, the door is wooden. |
| Psychoticpsymon07-28-06, 11:43 PM | How'd this one work out? |
