ummmm.... Eldritch Knight or Spellsword? :P

hmmm..... you are level 18 combined. That means you have 2 more levels to increase your base attack bonus and saves. After level 20 they do not increase anymore. For a level 16 wizard, 2 more points in the base attack will not have much impact. Eldritch knight or spell sword should have been done much earlier. Try something that power builds on your spell casting like the archmage.

Like Aerunation said; you're level 18. The time to think about taking a PrC was 10-12 levels ago. At this point, you're better off just taking more Wizard levels.

Hey, I have an idea... how about Forsaker?

Wiz 17 is probably the most powerful class you're going to be able to take next level...

9th level spells + 2 new spells for free. Assuming you have a 19 INT, of course.

Why the 2 lvls of fighter in the build ?

you be suprised how good and often he is in combat-he crafted himself a +3 lawful, holy electric mighty composite bow with zen Archery,PBS, percise shot.
He bought Bane arrows(E outsider).Currently, there are many demons on my campaign.
He also crafted a +4 keen longsword of speed, wich was rolled quiet intelegent, with see invisibility power.
He is capable, and not a munchkin at all-he is great at role-play.

Though there undoubtably a number of other prestige classes available I would recommend the Spellsword. With a Full base attack bonus, a D8 HD and good Fort and Will saves, it will provide a better bonuses than the Eldritch Knight, allow him to wear leather armor(or lighter), a bonus Metamagic or fighter feat at 20th level and will provide a third attack(if I counted right) at only the cost of a single spellcasting level. It is a good choice but one that should have been taken earlier. I would also suggest that the feat Practiced Spellcaster(+4 boost Caster Level upto HD, no spells per day increase), from the Complete Divine, would be a good choice given the number of missed spellcaster levels the character has.

You will want the following by the time you hit 20th level:
a) 9th-level spells
b) 3 attacks/round

You currently have 8th level spells and a BAB of +10/+5. The most optimizing thing you can do right now is to take two levels of Archmage. You will gain two High Arcana abilities (you'll want Mastery of Shaping and Mastery of Elements), +1 BAB (giving you 3 attacks/round), +3 Will save, and 9th-level spells (as an 18th-level Wizard).

Anything else (even two more levels of Wizard, or two levels of Spellsword or Eldritch Knight, etc) won't get you as much as those two levels of Archmage will get you. Believe me, Mastery of Shaping and Mastery of Elements are the two most important abilities for a high-level combat wizard to have (unless you tend to cast a lot of touch spells, in which case you'll want Arcane Reach instead of Mastery of Elements).

Should have taken eldritch knight a looong time ago, and only 1 level of fighter, but thats just me.

Has Spellsword changed? Does it provide +spellcasting levels?

Spellsword provides spellcaster increases at every other level (1/3/5/etc.)

ok so he could go
wiz16/ftr2/spellsword 1/something 1
or
wiz16/ftr2/spellsword 2

either way he'd get CL17 for 9th level spells at this point.

Right, except that spellsword 2 gives him 3 attacks and if he is serious about making a fighter/wizard then the 3rd attack will be very important as once you are epic, you can never get that 3rd attack(for some weird reason).

Sure, but as Heron_Marked_Blade already noted, he'll have 3 attacks pre-epic even if he goes with 2 levels of a (single) spellcasting class. At this point, just keep what you've got going for you--high caster levels.

If you don't qualify for Archmage, take a look at Incantatrix (PGtF) or just keep going as a wizard. Really, as long as you don't mix levels (such as 1 level of wizard followed by 1 in Archmage) you'll be all right. Spellsword works, but it loses you a caster level, which is generally fairly important at high levels.

Perhaps Loremaster: he could get a bonus to his REF save as a secret, or a bonus to hit. I'm not sure, and I don't wish to open a new window for the SRD for now.
Is he an elf? Arcane Archer could be good.

Assuming that prestige classes are just being introduced to the character I'd suggest letting the player rework the levels to add eldritch (3.5 DMG) at an earlier time. If you have the Complete Warrior a level or three of spellsword could also be allowed somewhere.

If none of that appeals to you I might just add two more levels of wizard. As previously mentioned you want a BAB of at least +11 and 9th level spells. At this point two more wizard levels will give you your spell increases as well as +1 to all your saves and BAB. Two levels of any PrC will gain you +1 to BAB but the save increase will be different and other abilities will have to be considered.

I have talked with him,and told him of the possibilities.
The problam is we dont have much of the PrC on books other than core(A friand's groop got Book of Vile Darkness/exalted deeds).
He thought about the Archmage, yet he falls from prequities,so he sticks with his original plan:use Fighter levels to boost FORTITUDE,and his feats to get better with the bow, while getting to that 17 level, at least,to get ninth level spells.
Taking fighter,if you wonderd, was to three equaly importent reasons for him:
boost combat skill(bow especialy),boost FORT,and as an role-playing decision.

*shrug*

i think i'd go Spellsword, for +1CL, -10ASF, and bonus feat.
but that's just me.
(otoh i probably would have originally built it around the standard gish build anyway so i guess the point is moot anyway heh.)

Umm fighter 3 = no bonus feat. So if you only have the core PrC books, go EK. 1st level gives a fighter bonus feat and 2nd level will give 9th level spell. As for HP 1d0+1d4 vs 2d6 isn't that big a deal. And he easily meets the req for EK. Better then taking a dead level of fighter really. Oh yeah his BAB goes to 12 vs 11.

What i was talking about with the bonus feat is that Spellsword 2 gets a bonus feat, according to this PDF:

Well, yes spellsword is better if he has the rules for it, but he mentioned he did not.

roger that; just wanted to clarify, in case we were miscommunicating about the source of the bonus feat.

ahh, also, now i understand why you specifically mentioned fighter3; because he is going to take wizard17 for 9th level spells, and with core rules only, since that only leaves 1 empty level, you therefore recommend wizard18 instead of fighter3. got it. small miscommunication there, cleared up now.

cheers,
