Sum of books and material out of a dungeon?

we are in a dangerous castle constantly being attacked by all sides. We found the wizard's library, which consisted of 500 books!! (can we say $$) Currently we are moving the books via teleport. Me, as the wizard, cast Bull strength on three of our strongest members and we then teleport the books out back to the capital in the safety of our guild. It is fine, except that with 2 teleport per day it will take us 5 days to move all the books. Is there is another way; we can do it without the wizard becoming the packing mule?

I don't think the DM wants you to be able to move them out. And with the whole 'always being attacked' thing, why isn't the castle gone by now? And how did you get in?

Anywho, I might as well offer my services - Tenser's Floating Disc. This spell will help you move even more stuff at once. I don't know how much it can hold off hand, or whether or not you can teleport with it (though it would make sense that it would be teleportable).

And if the disc dosn't work... then get a Bag of Holding. If you can find your way into a perpetually attacked castle without allowing the attackers to get inside and rout the defenders, then you SHOULD be high enough level to have a bag of holding. And the fact that you can cast teleport gives you a minimun level of 7 (I believe) which is FAR after you should have gotten a BoH.

Tenser's Floating Disk can't be teleported. The text of the spell states that magical forces cannot be teleported.

I seem to remember tell of an item called "ring gates" that are used in pairs - not sure what book they are from, though :(

They are at least in "The Stronghold Builders Guide" IIRC.

Teleport someplace with a person who can buy all the books. Negotiate the sale of the books but tell him he has to come get them. Bury the books at an agreed upon site (say just outside the castle). Now you got the money and only had to make one trip.

Don't have my books in front of me, but what about using shrink item?
Perhaps even using it on an entire desk/dresser full of books? (Not sure if that's legal...)

My Wizard has a spell called lighten the load, but I'm not sure where my DM got it - it makes an inanimate object (again, I'm thinking desk/dresser here) weigh 1/16 of its original weight and takes up 1/2 its original volume. Although I suppose that won't help you in the immediate future...

Is the guild too far for dimension door? That might make your trips take half the time.

Hope that helps some,
Corey

Another vote for shrink item. Even if a bookcase isn't a valid target a bag of them certainly would be.

You get 2 cu ft/level. If you're teleporting that means you get at least 18 cu ft per cast. The mass reduction is 4000x.

I would think you could get them all out in a single lift this way.

We are inside a castle that has a rift to a negative material planet. The outer wall of the castle is in good shape. The rift has slowly eating away the inside of the castle. Outside of the castle are 100+ of Mindless salt mummies who are not aware that we are inside (we came in through massive fly and invisibility). The objective of this adventure is to close the rift, so the monster from other planet can stop coming through. We think we have a way to close it, but it will create a huge explosion and most likely will take the castle with it. Before that happen, we would love to take the library with us.

Dimension door will take us right at the mist of the mindless salt mummies.....

Shrink item only take one book at a time.

Drop a gate spell, and shovel everything through.
Portable holes, bags of holding work great too.

Let's take a look at the description of the spell:This spell instantly transports you to a designated destination, which may be as distant as 100 miles per caster level. Interplanar travel is not possible. You can bring along objects as long as their weight doesn’t exceed your maximum load. You may also bring one additional willing Medium or smaller creature (carrying gear or objects up to its maximum load) or its equivalent (see below) per three caster levels. A Large creature counts as two Medium creatures, a Huge creature counts as two Large creatures, and so forth. All creatures to be transported must be in contact with one another, and at least one of those creatures must be in contact with you. As with all spells where the range is personal and the target is you, you need not make a saving throw, nor is spell resistance applicable to you. Only objects held or in use (attended) by another person receive saving throws and spell resistance.
I think your answer is in a bit of creative thinking. I'm assuming you're 9th level with a maxed INT of 20 (which gives you a bonus 5th level spell, for a total of 2 5th Level spells per day). At 9th level, you can bring along three additional Medium-sized creatures when you 'port. A Large creature (like a horse) counts as 2 Medium creatures. So... Why not cast Bull's Strength on a horse AND your strongest ally, load 'em both down to the point of almost non-movement, and 'port home? An average horse, properly packed, will carry a whole lot more than two above average humans (or half-orcs) on any day of the week.

Also, what's this guild you mentioned? Is it simply your way of saying "home base" or does your party actually belong to an organization of some sort? If the latter, why not enlist the help of your guildmates to move the stuff in short order? Give 10% of the proceeds back to the guild - heck call it 15% - and keep the rest. 85% of the take is better than getting nothing when the castle explodes, right?

Another option would be to invest in a few scrolls of Teleport. Heck, as a 9th level wizard you should have a few of these on hand anyway. Teleport is one of those utility spells that you should have access to at - quite literally - a moment's notice...

Got a paladin with you? The paladin can summon their mount, you load it up with as many books as it can carry (which is considerable), and then he un-summons it. Call it again when you're back home, and all the books show back up with it.

Next trick... bundle the books into 50 pound packages. Then use Monster Summoning 4 to call up a Lantern Archon. They can use Greater Teleport at will and take 50 pounds at a time. So command it to take a stack of books to your home base, come back, and repeat. A 9th level wizard would get 5 trips out of it. (home and back 4 times, then home). Thus moving 250 pounds of books per 4th level spell.

Alternately, you could use Lesser Planar Binding to summon ONE Lantern Archon and command it to shuttle ALL the books back to your home base. That's one task, and there's no time limit.

You've got 2 castings of Teleport at your disposal?

Go to a major city.
Find the biggest bag of holding you can get, or a powerful wizard.
Hire out the bag/wizard for a quick trip.

Also, many of the Rope Trick and Magnificent Mansion type spells provide a sheltered space. If this space is sheltered enough that it would survive the destruction of the castle, you could just store them there.

Summoning a very strong creature to pack mule might be an option also.

Polymorph one of your allies into a fire giant and hit him with bull's strength. He'll count as two people, but with a STR of 35, his Heavy Load is 2,100 to 3,200 pounds.

Load the books into a bookshelf he can carry, and port away.

How much can 500 books weigh?

Somehow, i think if they're limited to 2 teleports per day, a Fire Giant is going to be too many hit dice. (15)

A better bet is a Dire Boar. It's large and quadrupedal and only 7 HD. So with a Bull's Strength it has a 31 str and can therefore carry 5520 pounds!

A 100 page quality book would be 3-4 pounds (according to Complete Arcane), and if it has more pages, it could be up to 10 pounds or so. So you're looking at anywhere from 2000 to 5000 pounds of books.

I think we will try Polymorph one of the member into Dire Boar and go from there.

Paladin has a nice unicorn with a serious attitude issue...what do you mean you want to ride me...so I don't think he will want to function as pack mule for the day...

DM said that the horse will not willingly be teleported so it will be too risky.

It is a low magic world. I am only 10th lvl, so no bag of holding.

I will however buy some scrolls as suggested. It is funny to think that I don't have ANY scroll, potion or magic item short of one +1 ring of protection. I am one nake wizard. LOL :D

Good deal.

One more handy tip for you that might save you some time Teleporting back and forth...

A wizard is allowed to cast any spell with a target of "you" on his familiar instead. That includes Teleport. So cast Teleport on your familiar, and the familiar takes 3 of your party members with it to the destination, leaving you behind. Then you cast Teleport again, and take yourself and 3 MORE people to your destination.

That's 7 people on a 1 way trip using 2 teleports. Enjoy!

Teleport doesn't have a HD limit. It has a people limit.

No. What he meant is that the 2 teleport/day limitation implies that the wizard is a certain level. A Wizard of that level would not be able to summon a monster with as many hit dice as a Fire Giant.

Exactly. Polymorph is limited to the HD of the caster and the target. I was assuming that 15 Hit Dice was too many.

The assumed form can’t have more Hit Dice than your caster level (or the subject’s HD, whichever is lower), to a maximum of 15 HD at 15th level.

It's not summoning him, it's polymorhing into him.

But I just re-read polymorph, and I see what you're saying - he'd need to be 15th level to do so. I was thinking it was twice your HD.

That said, I don't see how an animal without hands is going to carry much - I'm assuming you don't have a set of sadle bags for the Dire Boar...
