Basically, I am looking for a weapon that would have reach that would also count as a double weapon.

I effectively want to play a sort of "spear wielding amazon" kind of ranger character, but mechanically it doesn't mesh well at all without this type of weapon considering favored weapon style.

If there isn't one, I'll probably go with a fighter and ranks in survival/nature.

I want to say I saw some feats that let you use a specific polearm as a double weapon; you could alternate between using the weapon as normal (with reach) or as a double weapon that did not have reach. Can't remember where (or even if) I saw such a thing...maybe Dragon some time in the last year?

It's a weapon style feat in Complete Warrior, It's focused towards a polearm though not a spear. It could be easily edited otherwise though. Talk to your DM about it.

Dragon 331, the "equipment" issue, has a section on polearms (spears included) with appropriate feats. Also, it suggests that using the butt-end of a pole weapon counts as an improvised weapon (1d6/x2), with appropriate non-proficiency penalty unless the feat is taken or the character has some other way to get improvised weapon proficiency, like the Drunken Master class.

Oriental Adventures has a few weapons that can switch between reach or double, but they're mostly chain weapons like the kusari-gama. None are spear-like.

It's a fighting style. You have to use a halberd, but doing so, you lose the reach.

What you want would be pretty powerfull, so check with your DM first...

I think maybe the awl pike? I'm not too sure though, check complete warrior and a pretty recent copy of dragon.

I allow spiked chains to be wielded as a double weapon but without the reach. Takes a move action to switch and it provokes AoOs. I don't see why reach polearm weapons like the guisarme cannot be a double weapon. It is basically a quarterstaff with better ouchy things at one end.

I would allow a custom weapon as follows:

Exotic, Two handed weapon.
Two headed Spear.

Long Spear with a head on both ends
Damage 1d8 /1d8, crit 20x3

Can be uesd as either a weapon with 10ft reach OR a double weapon.

Piercing damage.

Cost: 20 gp
12 lbs, 5 Hardness, 10 hitpoints.

We gave up the ability to do double damage on a charge and upgraded from Simple to Exotic in order to get the Double Weapon ability with no reduction in damage.
