Well, the DM has turned around a lot recently but I am not sure about this thing. Basically one of the main enemies we fight come in a variety of colors (each with its own ability.) And we saw a new one today... long story short it is now attached to me (not of my own doing.)

Basically it has its jaw wrapped around my collarbone (and I mean the bone) and its now healed over. Good news, I basically have regneration/fast healing/immunity to pain/huge bonus to will power, bad news is I am basically a spy for the enemy (but it has no influence of what I do.) Anyways, everything we have tried/know about is as follows.

-The last person who had one died when it was removed.
-The person never needs to sleep.
-It either has 50 natural armor or some kind of special ability that prevents it from being directly attacked. Basically, weapons just glance off its metallic hide.
-Nothing shows up on detect magic
-Shatter doesn't work on it apparently (I kept making my save, and I couldn't intentionally fail because of the creature. )
-It seems to either reflect all spells or phase them out somehow (kind of like an AMF)
-For all intensive purposes, personal spell that effect me, also effect it. For instance I cast body of the sun to try to burn it off, but it counted as myself so wouldn't work.
-The creatures apparently are blind and deaf (probably a blindsesne ability since some of them fly) and have some kind of hive mind.

Any ideas? I was thinking about keeping it, but I am a druid and the creatures are reknown for massive slaughtering of any form of life. I also fear that it will have long term repercussions or try to implant something in me.

Edit: The DM is pretty leninet on awaken, so it might be interesting if in the future I can awaken it. :p I don't like to brag, but I am probably the biggest roleplayer in the group (and pretty much the only one who talks in character) so he may just be trying to challenge me.

This just sounds like a plot hook to me...By the sounds of it, you cannot get it off you (at least not with your current abilities). Therefore, it almost sounds like railroading to me, but I might be wrong.
Options:
- kill yourself en get reincarnated...new body...no leech attached :)
- rip it of you (can you?) and if you die...get raised
- get a hold of a detect thoughts spell and see if you can read its thoughts...perhaps you can find out more about it...
- find some way to communicate with it (telepathy) and persuade it to leave you alone
there must be more...but I have to get to work...good luck

Unfortunately, getting raised at this point in the game is not an option (especially since a good portion of the party is evil and really greedy.)

Although the detect thought spells might be interesting.

Detect Thoughts is a good idea. Apart from that, I'd suggest waiting and taking whatever plot hooks come to you. You're out of options and most people aren't too fond of death, so continue with what you're doing.

That is, unless In Character-ly you would stop everything to try and avoid the creatures learning more or something along those lines. In that case, you could try that and see if your DM throws any different plot hooks at you.

A Miracle or Wish should do it, not the cheapest alternative though.

Attack it's creator. And by that I mean attack your DM with the thickest book on the table for putting you through that. Or, ally with the the creature's organization and make the DM regret making you near invincible. Try to become the creature somehow with spells or psionic powers that switch minds and bodies. Polymorph if you can.
Phrennzy

07-25-05, 10:09 AM
Why is it on you?

This is obviously a very heavy handed plot hook - especially if no spells work on it.

Naturally, you are going to spend just about every waking moment trying to get it off of you. It's foolish of your DM to think you'll just live with it.

Does it breathe? Get a snorkel (a hollow reed) and sit out in the water. Or if you can turn into a fish...

It has a metallic hide? Where's that Rust Monster?

Try Acid on it as well. I'd be willing to take massive amounts of pain to get rid of that thing.

What about poisoning yourself? Not to death, but a hefty CON loss would help. Injected close to the body of this thing...

But roleplay the efforts out - in an attempt to keep it alive to use against the enemy somehow.

Remove Disease and Heal are both supposed to deal with this type of scenario.

Cut it off and have regenerate ready.

Rusting Grasp it into oblivion.

Cut it off, if your DM declares you are dead, go find a game that doesn't have such a heavy handed railroading DM.

hack it off of you, then cast regerneration (or ring)

try a feign death like spell- if you fool it, it might come off of you- if it gets knocked out also, the your other party members can remove it...

try a read thoughts on it...maybe convince it that a different member of the party makes a better host... :D

holy/unholy water?

cast some divinations to ask for help...

if it IS metal, cast hold metal on it?

find its natural predator...

if it IS a spy...come up with a plan to accomplish whatever you are doing (DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR DM/GM) then devise a second plan that your group will discuss freely at the game... feed that thing faulty intelligence!

I didn't see what class/level you are, but if you are a wizard/sorc/bard/rog (the last two using UMD and a scroll) cast Magic Jar.

Magic Jar
Necromancy
Level: Sor/Wiz 5
By casting magic jar, you place your soul in a gem or large crystal (known as the magic jar), leaving your body lifeless. Then you can attempt to take control of a nearby body, forcing its soul into the magic jar. You may move back to the jar (thereby returning the trapped soul to its body) and attempt to possess another body. The spell ends when you send your soul back to your own body, leaving the receptacle empty.
To cast the spell, the magic jar must be within spell range and you must know where it is, though you do not need line of sight or line of effect to it. When you transfer your soul upon casting, your body is, as near as anyone can tell, dead.

This should trick the thing into thinking you are dead.

What happens to you/it when you Wildshape (you did say you were a Druid right?)?

I agree with the previous poster that Wish/Miracle would probably do it.

Or, if it is a plot hook, perhaps it falls way once the BBEG is defeated?

I'm a level 3 druid, no one in the party can afford/find the services for regneration/wish/miacle/heal. Remove disease won't work either. :)

I tried drugging myself, didn't work.

We haven't tried drowning it yet, mostly due to lack of a place to do it.

I was thinking about using it to my advantage, I was thinking if it was on me I could walk into their hive without being attacked. But then it is, what do I do then? I can hardly kill one by myself, much less a queen.

Unfortunately I don't think anyone has the detect thought spells until they gain another level.

And as I said previously, all spells I cast with personal range or cast on myself to benefit myself also effect it. I wouldn't be surprised If I magic jared and it soul also got taken. I'm more worried about the fact the last guy died when it was taken off and they probably had much better clerics than we do.

Well if it is a spy, can is see? can it hear? what languages does it understand? can it read? why did it pick you? These are all questions your character should be asking himself and hopefuly answering.

These things whatever they are sound dangerous enugh to be memorable so you should be able to research them. Mabye find some weaknesses or bring them to the attention of people better able to deal with them or help you.

It has no eyes or ears, but the species obviously has some way of seeing/hearing from my past experiences. I am going under the notion of some blindsense ability, also several creatures have shown to be manifesting properties of different planes so perhaps they are communicating in some extraplanar way.

I don't think it can read, its head is literally inside my shoulder.

Why did it pick me? It happened in combat, probably because I was slaughtering many of them and threatening their advances.

Unfortunately figuring out anything about these things seems to require checks in the 30s-50s. And multiple checks. Heck I don't even know what type of creature it is (I have ruled out animal though.)

Perhaps a Cleave attack or a Vorpal weapon? Use either against the creature, if it works: You're one less parasite. If it doesn't: Hack the corpse and resurrect

I like olshanski_home's advice the best. If it's a plot device, a player should have the full option of ignoring/abandoning it, even if that player regrets doing so later in the adventure.

If the freaky parasite under your Druid's skin is going to wind up saving your character's life, you could probably ask your DM "under the table" if it's *supposed* to be there, but not every gaming group has that kind of dynamic. Failing that, your DM has either created a puzzle too complicated to overcome or is just jacking your character around. :(

Here's another thought: Have you tried *asking* it to go away? You never know...
Paradisio

07-25-05, 05:35 PM
Yes I did try "talking to it", meditating, even trying to talk to it telepathically. I don't think the creatures have any personal intelligence.

The creatures seem to be devoid of any form of communication. I did try asking my DM out of game questions, but I got nothing.

Coat it with tar. Let the tar harden. Perhaps this will limit it's senses.

THis sounds like a huge railroad.

I would ask the DM if it is.

Then, depending on the campaign, you may just want to take your own life rather than be a pawn. See what he says to that.

No one would leave this thing on them.

Reminds me of the last few seasons of Babylon 5 - when one character gets this sort of thing on them.

I hate crap like this. You should at least be able to narrow down it's type...Aberration, Outsider, or Construct, probably. Unless it's a heretofore unkown type of monster--a possibility that a lame DM would feel plenty comfortable with..."It's an entirely new type of Far-Realm Creature, removable only by the highest level Alienists in the Employ of The Backwards-looking Eye of f'FtK-plu'tz...A sinister organization that you now have to work for...draining your soul...becoming a Far-Realm creature..."

I feel for ya, buddy--this will be a long and corny road, and you will have no access to the steering wheel. Good luck.

It probably has some sort of Damage Reduction to a type of metal. Unless your party has the right metal or enough strength you might not be able to hurt it enough to kill it right off.

It could have spell resistance, and apparently the DM isn't telling anyone that.

I would suggest surgury, a high enough heal check would be able to cut it away to the jaws. Then get your barbarian friend to rage and pull it out, collar bone included.
Lyinginbedmon

07-26-05, 10:54 AM
Let's analyse what we know:
It's serpentine (So probably Aberration or Reptilian)
It has attached itself head-first through an open shoulder wound (Indicating that it may be acting as a filter for the blood stream whilst feeding off Oxygen/Carbon Dioxide and other materials inside it, which may eventually cause the host body to fail)
And has then wrapped itself around the collar bone (A sure bet to say that if it is ripped from it's place it will cause extreme internal damage)
It can grant a number of biological abilities including regeneration (Further indicating that it supplements bodily functions)
It seems immune to most magical effects that remove curses, such as restoration (Possible spell resistance or worse (See below))
It seems to be affected as the host body regarding spells (Possibly spell immunity)
It seems to be almost invulnerable to physical harm from weapons available (So is either high AC, high DR, or extreme FH)
And it is affected by poisons (But it would be too hazardous too use a fatal poison to remove it)

Based on this, I can say that it is obviously a DM creature that is meant to stay there, but we can still try.

Fire, if available, should be applied to the entry wound, cauterising it & hopefully damage the parasite. If that doesn't work, attempt Acid or Electricity, one will damage it and the other may disable it.

Elemental damage is your best bet, but otherwise I recommend some in-game research into it to see more about them. :(

Lastly, does this parasite have a name? It's getting old calling it a Gould :P

As far as Stargate comparisons go, it sounds more like the Wraith-like parasite that got attached to Sheppard in an early episode. In that case, killing the host (and subsequently reviving him via defibrilation paddles) was the solution, and there have already been some suggestions to this effect.

If I were presented with such a situation in-game, my solution would be fairly simple: Write up a new character under whatever guidelines your group uses (I'd go with Cleric, as they have the best chance of eventually healing your original character), and hand my previous character's sheet to the DM, saying "It's no longer my character, so here, you look after him until we can find a way in-game to reclaim him."

if you are a "Goauld", as one of the previous posters says, then you should have your character commit suicide, followed immediately by verbally berating your DM for blatantly copying something so atrociously lame as Stargate SG-1 in his D&D game.

Maybe you should investigate the report of the NPC who's parasite was removed? It may be that the rumour was instituted by the parasites to prevent or discourage anyone from removing them from their hosts?

If no such information is available, try capturing a live host & parasite and then removing the parasite. If he dies, it's a safe bet the rumour is true, otherwise: Yank away!

I'm amazed that no one has suggested just leaving it on for the time being. I know that if I had some bizzare magic parasite that gave me superhuman abilities and all evidence suggested removing it would kill me my first reaction would not be to let Hennet hurl balls of acid at the base of my neck or let Thurg try to rip my collarbone out. Yes, I'd remain concerned and I'd try to find out what it is and how I can remove it, but in the meantime I'd be running around taking names.

I know that if I had some bizzare magic parasite that gave me superhuman abilities and all evidence suggested removing it would kill me my first reaction would not be to let Hennet hurl balls of acid at the base of my neck or let Thurg try to rip my collarbone out.

The problem is, the reasonable responses (magic, surgery, remove disease) not only are not working, but they are providing no insight into a solution. Kind of ruins the whole 'PCs as problem solvers' mind-set. Hennet's corrosive powers start looking like a solution...

Feh. It's obvious that nothing will remove it. Just hand over your character, then roll up a new one. Moreover, don't even ask what happens to the old one. Just let him wander off into the forest, never to be spoken of again.

Why are all you guys overreacting as such?

"Throw away your character."
"Hand it over to your DM"
"Leave the party"
"Hit your DM"

I don't like saying it but you guys really need to lighten up!
You're beginning to sound a lot like the kind of people that whine and scream every time something happens thats outside of your control!
Though its a weapon designed against DM's I'm very tempted to take out the hammer gun and give each of you a good shot in the face!
Now back to the topic;

If all action fails then just let the thing be for a while. Feed it some misinformation as a lot of people suggested and make the most of it.
Take advantage of the power boost and hone your skills until you can take revenge.
What also works is to let other characters keep yours in the dark. When a mission is being discussed stay outside so the thing around your neck cant hear anything. That should deprive the enemy of the most critical pieces of information. Don't go into rooms that display tactical maps or other information that the enemy could want.

It is a good point, perhaps if we kill there queen it will come off. We should be able to do it by the end of next session.

07-26-05, 11:52 PM
I'm guessing its some type of construct graft, aberrant graft with construct traits, or an intelligent item (effectively a construct anyway). It just still has its own will and an EGO score higher than yours. And a hardness beyond what a 3rd level party could hope to beat. Perhaps adamantine? That has hardness 30 as I recall. And most energies have reduced damage against items anyway (for the purpose of overcoming hardness). Except sonic, I think.

It may be a railroad, but it is not a very serious one - so far. You say the creatures seem to have a hive mind. Is it a high Int mind? Or is it working for another? Are these creatures major menaces or just something you recently met? If the latter perhaps the creatures are hoping to get more information on the surrounding area through "safe" travel. And if a minor little one like this is that powerful, it might be best not to anger the others into attacking you by mistreating it.

Or perhaps we're seeing a new homebrew version of Mindflayer-type aberration. I seem to recall on alien that after a while the early phase of the creature fell off - before the other ripped out. Perhaps this one will eventually fall off, but instead of ripping out you will slowly change in type and the other personality will slowly take over. . . .

Another thought. If the party is mostly evil, this might be an attempt by a good (or at least non-evil) creature to gain information on the party. Perhaps it is an intelligent item forged by a deity. As an artifact, destroying it will be difficult, and doing so might cause the deity to take notice (a 5% chance, I think, or that might only be for MDs).

07-27-05, 02:58 AM
They have been a continual threat throughout the campaign (well, all 4 sessions of it) and it seems we have the force to take out a full hive now. We have no indication that they are working for another force. But all they seem to want to do is take over, they haven't attempted to do anything peaceful. As soon as they see us, they attempt to dismember our bodies and devour them.

The DM let it slip out of game, by mentiontioning they were extraplanar.

A single one of the creatures are usually fairly weak, but have a variety of special abilities. There are a couple large, very powerful ones though.

Sorry man, but that's not Go'auld. They slide up your spine and actually take control.

Not, these creatures come in different colors, are extraplanar, have no visible sensory organs, live in hives and each variety has a different ability.

Genetlmen, Paradisio's DM is using slivers.

I can't tell you more because I don't want to step on another DM's game, but just got with it, if he's doing what I think he is, this will be fun :)

Edit: Not all things dropped on a character are bad and people should stop acting like it is. This thing isn't hurting his character, just foiling the party's secrecy.

Now, let's review.

Outsider Type

An outsider is at least partially composed of the essence (but not necessarily the material) of some plane other than the Material Plane. Some creatures start out as some other type and become outsiders when they attain a higher (or lower) state of spiritual existence.

Features

An outsider has the following features.

8-sided Hit Dice.
Base attack bonus equal to total Hit Dice (as fighter).
Good Fortitude, Reflex, and Will saves.
Skill points equal to (8 + Int modifier, minimum 1) per Hit Die, with quadruple skill points for the first Hit Die.

Traits

An outsider possesses the following traits (unless otherwise noted in a creature’s entry).

Darkvision out to 60 feet.
Unlike most other living creatures, an outsider does not have a dual nature—its soul and body form one unit. When an outsider is slain, no soul is set loose. Spells that restore souls to their bodies, such as raise dead, reincarnate, and resurrection, don’t work on an outsider. It takes a different magical effect, such as limited wish, wish, miracle, or true resurrection to restore it to life. An outsider with the native subtype can be raised, reincarnated, or resurrected just as other living creatures can be.
Proficient with all simple and martial weapons and any weapons mentioned in its entry.
Proficient with whatever type of armor (light, medium, or heavy) it is described as wearing, as well as all lighter types. Outsiders not indicated as wearing armor are not proficient with armor. Outsiders are proficient with shields if they are proficient with any form of armor.
Outsiders breathe, but do not need to eat or sleep (although they can do so if they wish). Native outsiders breathe, eat, and sleep.

Now, let's review. Drowning it will not work, as Outsiders do not breathe.

I would also speculate that, though the DM is not telling you so, that your own Type has changed from Humanoid to Outsider, and not with the Native subtype, as you require no sleep. Attempt to test this theory by not eating or drinking.

Also, test to see if you have Darkvision, as I assume you didn't have it before this.

As you cannot have two main types, it is most likely that it has the Outsider type. However, it is also possible that, like an Inevitable, it is a Construct.

Construct Type

A construct is an animated object or artificially constructed creature.

Features

A construct has the following features.

10-sided Hit Dice.
Base attack bonus equal to ¾ total Hit Dice (as cleric).
No good saving throws.
Skill points equal to (2 + Int modifier, minimum 1) per Hit Die, with quadruple skill points for the first Hit Die, if the construct has an Intelligence score. However, most constructs are mindless and gain no skill points or feats.

Traits

A construct possesses the following traits (unless otherwise noted in a creature’s entry).

Construct HP bonus table:

Construct Size Bonus Hit Points
Fine —
Diminutive —
Tiny —
Small 10
Medium 20
Large 30
Huge 40
Gargantuan 60
Colossal 80

No Constitution score.
Low-light vision.
Darkvision out to 60 feet.
Immunity to all mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, phantasms, patterns, and morale effects).
Immunity to poison, sleep effects, paralysis, stunning, disease , death effects, and necromancy effects.
Cannot heal damage on their own, but often can be repaired by exposing them to a certain kind of effect (see the creature’s description for details) or through the use of the Craft Construct feat. A construct with the fast healing special quality still benefits from that quality.
Not subject to critical hits, nonlethal damage, ability damage, ability drain, fatigue, exhaustion, or energy drain.
Immunity to any effect that requires a Fortitude save (unless the effect also works on objects, or is harmless).
Not at risk of death from massive damage. Immediately destroyed when reduced to 0 hit points or less.
Since it was never alive, a construct cannot be raised or resurrected.
Because its body is a mass of unliving matter, a construct is hard to destroy. It gains bonus hit points based on size, as shown on the table.
Proficient with its natural weapons only, unless generally humanoid in form, in which case proficient with any weapon mentioned in its entry.
Proficient with no armor.
Constructs do not eat, sleep, or breathe.

(And yes, that table was a royal pain to format.)

If we are dealing with a Construct here, your options are far more limited, essentially limited to beating the DM and telling him this isen't fun. As you can see, Constructs are about unkillable, especially at your level. It does not eat, sleep, or breathe, immune to anything you can come up with that has a Fort save, immune to all poisons, necromancy, and mind-effecting spells.

However, as you seemed to suggest that poison would work, but would kill you as well (possibly the other way around,?) then it's not a Construct.

I don't know what to think. If you were in a Good party of higher level, I'd go with the kill me and raise me option. As it is, you're in an Evil party, so it's your character's own fault for adventuring with such people.

Yes, they are based off slivers. Heck, we play at a M:TG store.

Edit: And I believe I am currently attached to the "clot sliver." Since it has "regenerate this creature."
Score one for being an even bigger nerd than anyone else.

Now, ignoring all the DM bashing here, I've got a theory for you:

You know how slivers operate - one sliver gets the power of all the other slivers nearby. This particular sliver, which may also be a mindwhip (I think that's the one that looks at your deck) sliver is granting its abilities to you.

In theory, next time you encounter a hive, you may gain thier powers OR, better yet, be ignored by the hive. My logic goes that now you count as a sliver.

But if you are bothered by this, do talk to your DM. Don't get all whiny and huffy and off your charactr in protest like people are telling you, be mature and have a frank discussion with the DM about where this is going, giving him assurances you won't metagame. Heck, offer him some ideas even. Don't pass up the chance be in what I'm seeing as a really fun game because some people here have been trained by Gygaxian DMs to instictively hate and distrust all DMs.

Besides, it could be worse, I once gave a character a goodie two shoes (read pacifist, faints at the sight of blood) version of Venom.

You guys, you are making this complicated for nothing.

It's CLEAR that this thing is a sliver/outsider type of creature.

BUT, the real question his : PARADISIO, ARE YOU COMFORTABLE IN THIS ? If not, tell your DM about it. REMEMBER THAT THIS IS A GAME ! ONLY A GAME ! If he is the least interested in you, he'll tell you what it is or will do something about himself screwing up. If he does nothing, than he's just stupid. So wack him and go find another game.

THIS IS ALL YOU NEED TO DO !!!!!!

I hope that all will go well for you in your future games.
