| RedRibbonDr10-01-06, 05:24 AM | Greetings. I just recently started playing D&D -in fact our group’s first session ended a couple hours ago-, and I’m having a issue with my character (Human, Fighter, lvl 01). My character is using a two-handed, double-bladed weapon: Two-bladed Scythe: (Two-handed Exotic Weapon); 120gp; dmg 2d4/2d4; Crit x4; 22 lb.; S type. And I’m not quite sure how to apply the Str Mod. I was under the impression that I applied my Str Mod (+4), then half of it (coming to +6), towards both damage rolls. The DM confirmed this a couple days ago. But after our gaming session ended and two of us were just battling for fun, they, and the DM said that’s not how it works. So I’m a bit confused. The person I was battling said it might be +6 for a single attack, but if I attacked twice it would be +4 for the first, then +2 for the second. I’m planning on talking to the DM about it tomorrow, but I’m still up so I thought I’d post here to see what others said. Anyone? Oh, my feats are ‘Exotic Weapon Proficiency’, ‘Two-Weapon Fighting’, and ‘Quick Draw’. And we’re playing an Eberron campaign. If that factors in at all. |
| SnowSage10-01-06, 05:29 AM | those factors aren't involved at all, however, it was smart to grab the proficiency feat. How it works is if you only attack with one part of a double weapon it is treated as a two handed attack {1.5 X strength mod, so +6 for you.} However, if you make two attacks, you are considered to be duel weilding with a one handed in primary hand and light in off hand, thereby offering minimal accuracy penaltys, but only 1X your strength mod on each damage roll {+4 to each hit, in your case.} |

Not full. |

Are you sure? I'm not saying I think you're wrong, it's just What's throwing me off is the 'penalties apply as if the off-hand end of the weapon were a light weapon'. (And the mixed message from the DM of course.) RRDocter. |
| pinkbunny10-01-06, 05:37 AM | I was also wondering about this and also if you get 1.5 str bonus on a 2h weapon like a greatsword? |
| SnowSage10-01-06, 05:40 AM | I was also wondering about this and also if you get 1.5 str bonus on a 2h weapon like a greatsword? yes... the greatsword, greataxe, and greatclub were designed specifically to give people a chance to do 1.5 times their strength mod in damage... and I may be wrong on the off hand damage part... I'm not much of a duel weilder... I just kill things with my one big sword/axe/scythe, thanks. |
| Otto the Bugbear10-01-06, 07:04 AM | You are wrong. Two-bladed sword: Attack a single time to gain: 1.5x str to damage. Attack with both ends to gain: Main hand adds 1x str to damage Off hand adds .5x str to damage It's all covered quite well in the book and the FAQ (on this site). Cheers Otto :) |
| Radijs10-01-06, 09:43 AM | Otto is 100% correct. |
| RedRibbonDr10-01-06, 11:35 PM | Alright, so if I make one attack in a round it gets 1.5 Str Mod, while if I use a full-round for two attacks, one gets my normal Mod, while the other gets half. Thanks for everyone's input, and helping a new tabletop gamer. ^_^ |
| Otto the Bugbear10-02-06, 07:27 AM | Actually, I slightly misspoke. I answered based on your character (Ftr 1), not on the rules in general. Attacking with a single end gives you the Str x1.5. If you get to fighter 6, then both attacks made with a single end get you Str x1.5 When you switch to TWF and attack with both ends, then "main hand" gets Str x1 and "off hand" gets Str x.5. This is regardless if you make only one attack with "main hand" plus one attack with "off hand" or if you make 8 attacks with "main hand" plus 6 attacks with "off hand" (ala the Dervish's Thousand Cuts class ability). So you see, while I wasn't actually wrong, it may be misleading about what happens once your character reaches BAB +6. Cheers Otto :) |
| RedRibbonDr10-02-06, 07:51 AM | I see. Thanks; that'll come in handy later on. (Assuming I survive that long. :twitch: ) |
| Yaeri10-02-06, 11:26 AM | I just wanted to add, so it is entirely clear: you only get the 1.5*STr bonus using only a single end, if you use both your hands to wield it. So there's no carrying a shield and slashing away with "only one end" of the weapon to get 1.5*Str bonus. (You'd only get 1*Str bonus in that case) |
| Cifer10-02-06, 08:10 PM | So there's no carrying a shield and slashing away with "only one end" of the weapon to get 1.5*Str bonus. (You'd only get 1*Str bonus in that case) Since it's a twohanded weapon, one couldn't attack with a shield in hand (except for a buckler) at all in this case. While it's generally accepted that you can use a twohanded weapon and take one hand off of it (otherwise, a wizard with a quarterstaff couldn't do any somatic components), you cannot fight that way. |
| Yaeri10-03-06, 03:59 AM | Ah, thanks for the correction. I was a bit confused. |
