Our party has come accross an artifact called the black egg. It is from a Dragon magazine and we remember reading about it a long time ago but dont remember what it is or what it does other than you dont want to touch the black liquid comming from it and it is evil. Anyone know what this is, and how do we move it w/o getting killed.

we are going to find out the info on it any ways durring the next session. We are just trying to get a feel for what it is and what it does. We have a library of books from where it was found and there is going to be info in it in there it just takes time. We have 2 wizards, 2 sorcerers and a gold dragon, 3 monks and 2 druids looking for the information along with a network of wizards that can be contacted to find out what it is. The main thing is we need to move it w/o touching it. Death...bad. no divine magic is working right now because of the BBEG. Also it is not hard to seperate what we know from what our pc's know. But I understand that it is hard for some.

Speaking from a general knowledge of non-artifact-level eggs, your egg should not be leaking fluid of ANY color. A leaking egg is not fulfilling its original design intent and should be left behind before it starts to reek.
Khaldune

09-02-06, 07:49 PM
it is only egg shapped not a real egg and typically i would agree to let a leaking egg be but being an evil artifact we cannot. Telekinesis, improved mage hand a reached teleport any object are good ideas but what do we do abt the leaking goo of doom that is comming from it. we need to move it so our enemies dont get hold of it and "destroy the world" according to the 1/2 white dragon we captured. what a cliche by the dm. keep the ideas comming and if you know what it is I'd appriciate the info. thanks

What is the point of playing a roleplaying game if you're going to go to a freaking forum for information that your character doesn't have? That is outright cheating, and no player worth his salt is going to tell you a darned thing.

You want to find out what the egg is? Find out in the game. Use the skills your character has, the abilities your character has, and the information that your character can gain in the game to find out. Don't go behind your GM's back to look up something he's using.

Not only is it cheating, but it's also cheating yourself of the real joy of discovery, and of the real joy of honestly overcoming a challenge. What you're asking for are cheat codes to a video game, and no one here is going to help you.

Play the game like it's meant to be played, and don't cheat.

we are going to have the information the next time we game and the pc's will find out in the books we read. We just don't want to spend an hour thinking on how to handle it when it should only take 10 min pc time. It is not a pivotal part in the story, only a side step. Some of you people take this way to seriously. yes it is a game and it is very fun. but don't freak out when someone ask for what something is. Like i said before our group can separate player knowledge from pc knowledge. We each ave 2-3 pc's and are able to keep them strait and not give certain pc's info they don't need and so those pc's are out of the loop and many things because it would screw things up if they knew. we just want to expedite the actual game play instead if twiddling our thumbs thinking on what to do. It will be abt 10 min of dice rolling to get the information with searches and spells. and we are abt to contact a network of wizards for them to hit the book to give us the proper information. We as players just don't want to waist game play time with pointless bantering at the table on what to do with it now that we know what it does. Seriously not all games are run the same and ours is quite involved so if we can figure things out outside of the game and then when the pc's figure it out in the game it moves so much faster and are able to accomplish more in the sesson. Also how is this any different then asking about dragon abilities and how to defeat it! its not.

What we know-It is oozing a black liquid that if you touch it you will become chaotic evil( if you fail your will save) and will want to control the egg even though you cannot. If you do not have enough hit dice it kills you....and any other info that you have on hand is appriciated.

please no more rants on cheating because we are not. I do not want to deal with any more I have explained my self enough

Wait, wait, wait. Your DM introduced a (major?) artifact to the plot, an item which is so unique and powerful that it can't even be priced in the book, an item that grants powers great and unparalleled to its wielder, and you claim it's *not* a pivotal part of the story? Either you're lying or mistaken, or perhaps your DM is toying with you, unaware of issues of balance and gameplay control. In general, one should never be able to wave off the power of an artifact with one hand, and if your DM is using it as a minor "side step" in terms of the adventure, then he's (she's) doing something wrong.
Artifacts are so unique, powerful, and special that any powerful being who knows about it and could get power from it would seek it out. To treat them as one would a +1 longsword or an Everburning Torch is foolish and brings to ruin the very concept of the artifact, not to mention the rules they're based on.
Besides, if your DM wanted to to know before your next session, he would have told you already. Don't assume you know your DM's intentions completely, and if you do, don't assume you understand them.

First things first, DONT TOUCH THE GOO!

I love the black egg, one of my favorite artifacts come to think of it. The artifact see's good use in my campaigns, but usually on the villains side.

Now, I assume you have either run through the complete adventure from dungeon magazine, or your DM has simply added it to an adventure of his own design. The liquid pouring from the egg is poisonous to any non-dragons, but cruel DM's may rule this to all but evil dragons. Half dragons count in this regard, they are free to touch the liquid.

Now, have you ever heard of an item called 'the Blood Claw' the black egg is almost useless to you without this item. The blood claw absorbs the souls of dead dragons, then feads them into the black egg, the egg uses the souls to spawn very strong half fiend red dragons [young adult to adult age category].

Your egg will try and dominate the party, it will try and disintigrate the party, and it is very much sentient and evil. It can change peoples alignments to chaotic evil and if you overcome all of this [usually with high saves that I wont tell you the DC's for ;) ] the egg will dominate your close friends and relatives to have them betray you.

For my players, this has not been much of a problem, the main thing comes from the various cults and NPC's that follow said egg in the hopes of using it for themselves. Watch out for a guy called 'tobias', and with that, I hope I have been helpfull. I think I'll stop letting you in on hte answers now, after all, your DM has to havea few suprises.

Have fun and try not to metagame. Dont do anything I wouldn't do :D

Good general knowledge, the egg can disintigrate anything with 9 HD or fewer. Th 'turn chaotic evil' thing is another abiltiy, not part of the ooze/goo, it's a will save, a high one. The down side to these? They are touch spells, so stick to the old telekenisis and mage hand :D

Yes we know that the artifact is "important" and has all of this evil power. We know that the BBEG wants it a collosal red(daughter of Tiamat)/Desiple of Arshadolon(yes his daughter too) sucks for us yes I know. The egg makes sence in the game but is know the artifact that has us worried. The artifact that the BBEG has sucks more. The power is not important as much as the curse...It cuts of a random god a day from being able to contach the material plane for two weeks...no divine magic. We have figured out a way to transport the egg w/o touching it and are going to destroy it using the power of celestia to do it, not hard to get there. As for the DM not telling us the game ended late and all of us had to go to work the next day so we were all tiered and not wanting to go any further after we found the egg. All the reserch will be done next gaming session and will take abt 10 min. know that i know what it does it will only take the 10min and we can move on in the game w/o haveing to talk for an hour abt it. Side note the goo was not so paletable for the 1/2 red we capured alive and stuck his face into it. i'm fairly certain that he is not waking back up any time soon and if he does he will be missing his head. So this artifact being all important in the grand plan of the DM can have a nasty turn for us if we do not act fast which we typically do. The importance of finding an artifact like this was an oh crap situaion for the party and the players and we never take it lightly. The DM is very creative and will keep us on our toes. Thanks Razieliffied for the info

There is only one thing you can do with an artifact-level egg: Artifact-level omeletes.

Also, stop metagaming. If your DM wants you to know, he'll tell you. If he doesn't, he won't. If all you want to do is get the power up and win the game, go play WoW. (seriously, WoW is like one big HnS campaign, and damn fun)

Any chance it might be a home brewed artifact that looks like an already published one? Before you say "My GM told me so" know that I will hapily lie to any player I know to be a metagamer so he'll act on his false information and die. Also you're supposed to be an adventurer, grow a pair and take the artifact if it kills you get raised! One level lost never hurt anyone... wait it did hurt that time.
And remember the easiest way to tell if the GM is telling you something that is laced with dangerous subtext, check if his lips are moving.

Khaldune: Could you space out your paragraphs for ease of reading?

Only ten minutes to research an artifact and find out everything it does? My mind boggles. Not that I don't believe you... wait, actually that's precisely it! I don't believe you.

You got caught out lying once: It's not important. Oh wait, yeah we know it's important. I think it's pretty low coming onto forums and asking for out-of-game information.

Taking it too seriously? Asking for people not to look down on you for blatant metagaming?

Pal, this is a forum dedicated for use by people who play D&D, many of the users take their hobby fairly seriously, most of us also feel sorry for your DM who has to deal with a player taking things 'behind his back'.

Also; you can ask us not to comment on your cheating tendencies, but your wishes don't have a lot of weight really. You come off as sounding overly defensive... like someone who knows he's cheating and doesn't wish to be called on it.

That's my opinion on your posts.

If you want to know what something is, wait until the DM tells you what your PC finds out.
Khaldune

Every one in the group knows I posted my questions to the board, including the DM. Everyone, including the DM, agrees it saves time when we all have real jobs and work 40-50 hr weeks so when it is time to game the DM doesn't have to explain every once the PCs figure out what it is. Some of us also have kids so time is even more sparse.

I asked the Dm about it but he was taking care of his kids and didn't want to go digging for the article.

We have a rules lawer in the group and he was one of the first one I told I was going to get information on the posting boards after i talked to the Dm so as to cheating, again, if every one knows about it and we are trying to save time and enjoy the game with the time we have...who really cares besides the few who were beating your chests here like wild gorillas.

It is only metagaming if i use this information before it is given in game. We as players have a lot of info that the charaters do not have and that doesn't influence the game any way and that is with two or three characters per player in different parts of the game and at different times in the game. We are able to keep all the information straight.

It is only cheating or going behind the DM's back if I ask questions surreptitiously. As it stands, everything is completely out in the open.

Every DM runs his game a bit differently than every other DM. If your DM would "put an arrow through your PC's neck and never DM for you again" then, by all means, don't ask questions on the forum. Or get a new DM who isn't so ****. Whatever.

It's a game. Do whatever keeps it fun and interesting for you. Buy miniatures. Buy more books. Act it out. Buy costumes. Video tape your game sessions. Post on boards. :D

This keeps it fun for us.

Deal.

You "this is cheating" people are nuts. Anyone with a lick of sense knows you should always prepare as much as you can outside the game. Why think through your options spontaneously and on the fly when you can familiarize yourself with possibilities from the comfort of your keyboard?

(Then again, I am an unabashed powergamer. Not looking up the magic items would be like not reading the Monster Manuals in advance.)

According to Google,"The Black Egg" is an adventure for 12th level characters in Dungeon 106. It's even on the cover of the issue.

yes destroying it will tick some one off pretty bad but in the exalted deeds it states that a good alligned party that destroys an evil artifact that each member gets a free mirical. Also it states that major artifacts cannot be redemed but minor ones there is a chance.

for now we are going to hide it in a secret chest till we deside the appropriate time to destroy it, then good bye goo dripping egg of doom and destruction!!!

Gosh, I hope you are speaking with tongue in cheek, because otherwise you're not a powergamer, you're an absolute munchkin. As a GM, I make certain that character knowledge is what players can use, not OOC knowledge. Any player that starts quoting Monster Manual on me when facing a creature will be asked for a Knowledge check appropriate to the creature type. I will then tell him the information that his character knows based on the DC of the check. Facing a mohrg? Knowledge: Religion.

If a player tries to use OOC knowledge in my game, I put a stop to it right then and there. Powergaming is making the most of what you've got. Using information that your character don't have is cheating, period. I like smart players, but cheaters are another matter entirely.

Play the game. Have fun. But don't cheat, or you'll just wind up cheating yourself of the real pleasure of the game.

I do both as well, and I still say what I said. D&D is for roleplaying first, and hack/slash/kill second (if at all). WoW is HnS first, RP if and only if you join the proper server. I never said one cannot do both, but that one obviously can't play a game without getting a walkthrough, and trying to do that when there's other people involved is rude to the point of disgust.
