...Dag, my publicist knows how to spin a schpiel.

Right, I had a big, mildly impressive introduction written out, but I think that his spin did it better. My name's Glordin Aleheim, I'm a ranger, and I'm doing this column to alleviate my boredom whilst I get the hang of retirement. Send me questions, I'll answer `em here. It's like "Dear Abby", but with owlbears and axes instead o' ex-husbands and doilies.

Hi Glordin.

I am interested in investing in property in a D&D environment. I would like to know what magic items or other investments will allow me to recoup my initial investment and earn a profit within 2 years; and at least a 15% long term profit.

Ignorance. Unfortunately, you've got decent grammar and punctuation, so you're already too smart to go that route. I suggest undergoing the process to become a psionic hole - or, failing that, getting a really good helmet.

:weep: Life isn't worth living anymore. What knot would you reccomend?

I recommend a number nine boot to the rear... and a trip to the pub.

Hi Glordin.

Now that's a question... It'd help if I had an idea o' what you were willing to pay into this. Taverns are always a good investment, as long as ya can afford the insurance. After all, you never know when an overenthusiastic party's going to roll in an' trash the place. Judging from the previous letter, you can probably make a decent profit with just a rope and a cardboard sign that reads "Will kill you - 20 Gold". Percentage-wise, that is.

If you're just looking for land speculation, aim for any growing, densely populated urban area with a relatively low crime rate and no obvious horrible invading hordes or creatures from beyond the scope o' mortal dreams.

If you're looking to provide a service, anything that allows you to cast Heal spells a certain number o' times a day with no charge limit is perfect. Put your cost at 15-20% beneath the local temple's charge, and watch the profit roll in. Granted, this works best if ya can get more than one of `em, otherwise you're stuck with a line o' sick customers and no way to deal with `em.

What level ranger are you?

Ehh? Have you been playin' in the trollweed, kid? I'm not a monk, we don't have ranks by belt level like they do.

(Editor's Note: Glordin is a 16th level dwarf ranger)

Right, that's it for tonight's edition. Keep the questions comin'. I'll be here to answer `em.

OK, I'll be serious. Is there a good starting non-prestige class that incorporates a fighter and wizard/sorceror class (apart from the warmage class because of its restricted spell list)? Something with the ability to wear decent armor would be good, but...

Ahh, to be young and starting out again. I'd have become a warblade instead...

What was the question again?

Right, right. Well, the best combat casters I've ever met were actually bards! Lemmetellya a little story... see, there was this pirate ship sidlin' up to a vessel a friend of mine was on. It was midnight, and on deck ya could see no less than fifty orcs an' hobgoblins, each one holding a torch and chanting. The cannons were lowered at my friend's ship, an' things looked grim. Then she tossed out a little suggestion to one of the orcs...

"Gee. It's not safe to have this torch lit on deck like this... I should put it out in this nice, safe black sand."

Kaboom. As for the armor thing, remember, any mythril armor is a lot lighter than its steel counterpart. Another bard I knew wore a mythril set of breastplate armor like it was nothing more than a leather suit...

I've heard that beguilers are also pretty effective in combat, but I've never fought alongside one, so take that with a grain of salt.

When is it a good idea to build a character with a race that has an LA. Are there any classes that aren't realy hurt by the lack of HD/BAB/Spells?

what would be the best familiar for a student of the bleak academy, who has become a dreaded wizard of the school of necromancy

(7th level dread necromancer 5th level zombie master and can have anything of tiny size as a familiar even dragons.)

Okay Glordin; I have roughly 50,000 GP to invest.

I'm wondering if you have any knowledge on the following investments:

Decanter of Endless Water: At its maximum flow rate, it produces sufficient water to provide a largish city with plumbing; Indeed, with water at a mere 1 Cp/ Gallon, I believe that I can recoup my investment in a mere three weeks.

Lyre of Building: With the ability to do 100 men's work in one hour, I would like to use this item towards its ability to create castles in just days (provided the bard is well compensated). The ability to sell castles is massive.

Grow Plants & Farmland: I believe that the use of the powerful magic item should be recoup entire harvests in less than a month. While labor costs might be high, I would be able to grow 16+ harvests every year.

I was wondering if you had any idea which of these investments would be the best to recoup my 50,000 GP and make heavy profits. I believe that the world is open to clever investment opportunities involving magic, and would like to take advantage of it, if possible.

I was actually wondering if a Paladin, who can detect those that are evil, can smite them upon detection without losing their paladin abilities. Do keep in mind that one that has become evil, has factually done something outrageously bad.

What if said paladin was in a town? Due to the paladins code of conduct, he must obbey legitimate authority, but he must also protect the innocent. Needless to say it is in the better interest of the innocent to see to it that any evil is terminated, especially since an evil perpetrator has already harmed the innocent (and thus making him evil).

So, can a paladin kill someone who he detects as evil, be it that he is 100% sure of his detection (by detecting false aura's with magic and more), or will he fall if he does so?

Sorry the reply took so long, but I had to get my editor to decode this one for me. Grotzing mathemancers...

Everything is hurt, to some degree, by lack of BAB and HD. Your best bet is to take something with a low LA (+1/+2/ETC) and use a class that relies less on its special features, such as Barbarian or Fighter. If you're strong enough, low BAB doesn't matter nearly as much...

Er... what were those things called... the little green flaming skulls? One o' those. Adds a lot to your ambience.

Play the opportunity, my good man. The lyre is an excellent choice if there's been a war or other catastrophe in recent memory, or if there's a great need to expand in your area. Grow Plants sounds like a good idea, but there's too many variables, and even with the spell your harvest can be wiped out by raiders, or a swarm o' dire gophers. The decanter... now that's a nice trick. In most cases, I'd say go for that one, but make sure that you have an agreement set up with the city in question before you pick up the decanter.

This is one of those really sticky questions. I once heard of a paladin named Saral Kaine who wandered around killing anything that even came into contact with anything remotely evil, and yet he never fell. Supposedly.

For the most part, I think that just being evil isn't enough to merit death by a paladin's blade. There are hundreds of ways to be evil, and a lot of times they're entirely within the realm of law. I'd keep an eye on the individual in question (especially if they seemed the shady type), just to be on the safe side.
