| Kearif03-30-07, 07:56 PM | I have played one too many games with players who don't know how to role play a barbarian but insist that the barbarian is their favorite class. I have created Mang, a barbarian with 18 intelligence and he will answer your questions about combat, religion, nature, friends, family, tribal live, and any other topic related barbarians. Please remember that only Mang should be in character, you lot are the players and Mang is the example character. Ask anyway. |
| Khadmus03-30-07, 08:15 PM | How do you feel about combat tactics? Empirical (sp?) processes and the like to find effective combat techniques, as well as the practical things such as flanking. (I think many people will object to this....but meh) |
| Prator_the_Legendary03-30-07, 08:23 PM | In an antimagic zone, which is more effective: A fighter, or a barbarian? |
| Novabomb03-30-07, 10:49 PM | In an antimagic zone, which is more effective: A fighter, or a barbarian? Easy, the Balor the wizard gated in from outside the AMF |
| Mindolin03-30-07, 10:50 PM | What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow? |
| Kyaran03-30-07, 11:03 PM | What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow? African or European? ;) Tell me, Mang, what is the correct relationship between a barbarian and nature? Is nature there to be revered? Subjugated? Endured? |
| darkdragonk03-30-07, 11:36 PM | How do you beat Pun-Pun And what is the meaning of life (I have a feeling they are closely related) |
| Board_Rider03-30-07, 11:47 PM | Mang, with your outlandish intelligence why did you not think that going arcane is a far superior choice? Secondly, do you not realize that raging could lend yourself to a tactical disadvantage, when faced with enemy in waves, unless you can combat the inevitable fatigue? Finally, Mang, what are your thoughts on being godlike in terms of intel but not being able to read (unless your one of those "smart" barbarians who sacrificed skill points)? |
| Nor'Morgwae03-31-07, 03:06 AM | Mang, am me smush gobleen wit big stik or am me smush gobleen wit clerik? :gah: |
| Maekrix_Waere03-31-07, 03:15 AM | How many questions can you answer in a single podcast? What is the best way to begin a strongly worded message to a retailer who has wronged you? What are the answers to the following questions: Why? When? Where? If a barbarian falls down in a forest, and no one is around to hear it, does it still make a sound? How many people does one barbarian kill in a day? How do barbarians suppress vestibular or equilibrium abnormalities during a kill so that aerial acrobatic maneuvers don't cause them to fall victim themselves? Do you ever get tired of being a barbarian? Can a barbarian create an axe so large that they themselves cannot wield it? How much sleep does a barbarian get? How often do barbarians bathe? How many different kinds of weapons do barbarians use? What do barbarians do for money? What makes a barbarian so special? Why do barbarians kill in the first place? Why can't barbarians love instead? What is the circumference of a moose?! What is integral theory? Of all the barbarian skills in the world, which is the deadliest? What is your favorite move recently? If a barbarian could be a food, what food would it be? |
| Archangel6203-31-07, 04:26 PM | How do you see your rage, your boost, is it anger, is it tribal spirits, what is it that drives your prowess and surges in battle? What advantages and disadvantages does your average barbarian face in different types of combat? What other barbarians have you met that really left an impression on you (literal or figurative) |
| Onikani03-31-07, 04:40 PM | when are you coming back to answer these questions? |
| Maekrix_Waere03-31-07, 05:55 PM | when are you coming back to answer these questions? I second this question. |
| kshade03-31-07, 10:39 PM | How many questions can you answer in a single podcast? He's a barbarian, not a ninja ;) |
| Maekrix_Waere04-01-07, 01:51 AM | He's a barbarian, not a ninja ;) :cookie: For recognizing that. |
| kshade04-01-07, 12:39 PM | :cookie: For recognizing that. Thanks. On a side note: Who would win a fight? A Ninja or a Barbarian? |
| Onikani04-01-07, 12:56 PM | a real ninja verse a real barbarian, or a Complete Adv ninja against a phb barbarian. There is a huge difference. :) |
| Maekrix_Waere04-01-07, 02:50 PM | a real ninja verse a real barbarian, or a Complete Adv ninja against a phb barbarian. There is a huge difference. :) Both ways-Ninja Regular Ninjas would just put a shuriken in the barb's head from some shadowy corner. CA Ninja would just ghost step all their Ki Points away, attacking the barb each time for Sudden Strike Damage, and the barb would have a 50% chance to miss the ninja. Alternately, the CA Ninja could wait for the barbarian to enter his rage, run up a 30 ft. tall wall/tree/etc., wait for the rage to run out, then kick the crap of him. (can only rage 1/battle) |
| Saytr04-01-07, 04:55 PM | The Barb keeps his dex bonus No SS for you! ~ |
| PhaedrusXY04-01-07, 04:59 PM | On a side note: Who would win a fight? A Ninja or a Barbarian?If Barbiarian = Viking, there is already a thread for this. :P |
| Amon_WinterfallIV04-01-07, 09:35 PM | Alright, just for chuckles: *Puts on Mang's Outfit* Now, Let's review the Mail: @Khadmus and Combat Tactics: Combat Tactics, such as flanking, are vital and they keep you and your friends alive. There is no shame in surrounding an enemy to deliver a glorious strike. If it helps, do it! @Praetor and Anti-Magic: I'm sorry, I've never encountered an Anti-Magic Field before, I'm not even sure what it would look like or how it would work. I've never studied magic; it's not my field of knowledge. @Airspeed: I don't know; I'm not a engineer, I'm a barbarian. I am a very smart Barbarian, but I don't have the answer to your question. Where is African or European? These lands aren't familar to me either. Regarding Barbarians and Nature: Nature exists as a state of being, it is not right to exploit anything, but Nature is also hardy enough to provide food, lumber, and hides. As long as we have the food, sheler, and maybe some grog, we should respect Nature. |
| Amon_WinterfallIV04-01-07, 09:46 PM | @Regarding Pun-Pun: Pun-Pun, despite his unlimited power, still has needs and wants. Fighting Pun-Pun is impossible, as is tricking him, but you might be able to convince him or make a bargain for a tiny portion of his infinite power. Beating him is impossible--but as he tends to leave everything alone, why would you want to? @Board_Rider: Well, my upbringing was that of a tribesman--a barbarian, as you would call it. I've never made an active choice against sorcerers or wizards, I've simply followed the way of life, like my father before me. Although, I admit that I did not learn to read until I was eightteen years of age, I do not feel disadvantaged or handicapped. Indeed, there are probably few people who can cut a tree as quickly as myself. @Nor_Morgae: Use the stick, unless you really don't like the Cleric. @Maerik: Questions such as "Can a Barbarian create a Stick so long that he can not lift it" aren't about learning, they are simply nonsencial questions. Indeed, claiming that a Barbarian is "No One" is bad humor at best. I'm going to ignore the rest of these questions. |
| Amon_WinterfallIV04-01-07, 09:58 PM | @Archangel: Rage is a overwhelming emotion--closer to rage and fury than any other one I can describe. It's a solid determination, an emotional and physical one that I MUST NOT or MUST do something. If I a fighting for my life, or for my friends life, I will probably go into this fighting fury and use this extra boost to do what needs to be done. Average Barbarians, not surprisingly, see little combat. Although many stories have been made about our skill in battle, our lives are not a series of conflicts--most of the time, we hunt game and drive off wild animals. Barbarians that strike out on their own, determined to find adventure (or have Adventure find them) aren't the norm. The main weakness of a barbarian is that they are very likely to be injured in a fight. They are, however, very unlikely to die in one. My clan elder, Tagrim, taught me much of what my own father did not. Indeed, I learned to read from him. He was a barbarian in his earlier years, and I mourn his passing to Ysgard. But I know that I fight, hunt, and work better because he showed me the way. @Onaki: I'm right here. Regarding Ninjas and Barbarians: It Depends. Assuming that they are close in personal power, the nature of the fight is probably the deciding factor. A Ninja is a cowardly assiliant who relying on treachery to fight. Real Men need no such advantage! Any kind of fair match, the Barbarian wins. But the Ninja will try to subvert the match--he will try to cheat. |
| Maekrix_Waere04-01-07, 11:10 PM | The Barb keeps his dex bonus No SS for you! ~ Curse you Uncanny dodge...curse you... Of course that is why we have poisoned shurikens. Huzzah for the natural 1! To Amon: 1)-At least have to common courtesy to spell my name correctly. 2)-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpTaBulIL_w 2b)-Get a (much larger) sense of humour. :P 3)-Why are you calling ninjas cowardly? There is no cowardice in waiting until you opponent has used up that which WILL kill you before you attack. I mean, would you call me a coward if you had a gun and I waited until you were out of ammo before I stepped out of my cover in order to attempt to pummel you into submission? |
| Amon_WinterfallIV04-02-07, 02:52 AM | [/OOC] What is a Barbarian going to think of a Ninja? I personally recognize that Ninjas are seriously powerful--the Japanese Sweep in SE asia is the spiritual successor to a 'Ninja Strike'. Its extremely powerful--this is I do not deny. Come on, a Ninja's style of fighting is going to be dirty, subtle, and yes, probably tasteless to a Barbarian. Killing from ambush and relying on stealth, not strength, isn't the Barbarian's style. Nor is it any style that the Barbarian will ever really respect. Oh, and by the way, I'd like to point out that ninjas DIDN'T win the fight against the Samurai in Feudal Japan. Getting away from the mythological and into the historical, Ninjas aren't instant winners or even close. THey are lower-class but highly trained fighters trying to even the odds against highly paid sworn warriors (Samurai) No hard feelings Maekrix. It's just that a REAL barbarian would not respond to foolish mythos (And he'd know it would be foolish). And very likely, he'd not share your (or my) sense of humor. Oh, and, I just was typing too much for your name. One Question: Did you forget that I was supposed to answer IC? |
| chava04-02-07, 03:30 PM | I don't know about that barbarians not attacking from a position of stealth. After all, you said yourself that most barbarians are simple hunters - does the smart hunter strike when the animal doesn't know he is there or does he make that an 'honorable' battle alerting the deer then giving chase? Plus, you need to respect the classics - Conan. Although he can handle a straight up fight without a problem he took those rogue levels (and pirate...) for a reason. |

(Name) Also, I definatly agree, in "fair" combat, Barbarian trumps Ninja. I also believe that in "fair"combat, Samurai trumps both Barbarian and Ninja...at the same time! Also, yes, I will abdicate. I forgot the IC when it came to the cowardice thing. Though I would still pose that same scenario (translated into medieval terms of course [Ballistae, anyone?]) to the barb about the cowardice. P.S. Forgot smiley, putting in now. |
| Zandolit04-02-07, 11:33 PM | Real Men need no such advantage! Any kind of fair match, the Barbarian wins. Speaking of which, what about female barbarians? Are they equally represented in the profession, or are their more males? How do male barbarians view female ones? On a potentially related note, do you prefer to date fellow barbarians, or other classes? If you date within your class, do you often "talk shop"? Do you define yourself more as a barbarian or as a... I don't think you ever mentioned your species... (human?)... or neither? Oh, and how do you pronounce your name? Does it rhyme with "fang," or is it more like "mahng"? |
| ShadowDragon868504-03-07, 12:36 PM | Mang, Do you feel that your uncanny amounts of intelligence have handicapped your other abilities - such as the ability to do battle, to resist trickeries of the mind, your ability to tough out long and ardous ordeals, and so forth? Do you prefer making your own, or making off with other people's? Do your people have a proud, sea-going tradition, or are you a strictly land-based Barbarian? Would you prefer it the other way 'round, or not? |
| Sarrazon04-03-07, 01:53 PM | Whats your favored weapon? |
| Amon_WinterfallIV04-03-07, 04:14 PM | I see that I've somehow managed to revive this thread, so. [Puts on Mang Costume] @Chava. Look, the Barbarian way of life does not necessarily mean suicidal frontal attacks (although there are many stories of dead barbarians who have attempted such). But the style of sneaking and ambushing--those of the tactics of the weak. Perhaps its better to live as a lamb than to die as a lion, but its clearly better to live as a lion than as a lamb. @Zandolit. Male Barbarians outnumber female barbarians, at least in my tribe, by four to one. I'm not going to claim that barbarian women are weak--they aren't. But most women in a tribe have to tend to the children--those that have chosen to fight have basically forsworn their traditional role in our culture. Women, like all humans (and more) are a mixed lot. Some of them really will sell their souls to a devil, some of them will die to save their friends. I'm a bit of a traditionalist--I don't view a 'Fighting woman' as someone I'd want to raise my children. That said, would I want to marry a clanmate--absolutely. Sharing fighting stories would be out of the question. I view home as a place to leave behind combat. Mang rhymes with Fang or Rang. I'm human, there might be a lineage involved; but if there is, its centuries old. |
| Amon_WinterfallIV04-03-07, 04:21 PM | @ShadowDragon. I view my Intelligence as a blessing from my Patron Deity (Kord). The idea that Intelligence handicaps my strength is silly, as there are many in the world who lack both wit and brawn. And, seeing as you have the ability the fly and are graced with both intellect and strength,I'd say that any "handicapping" is relative. I glad I'm smart, and I don't see why I can't also be above average in Strength. Regarding looting and war booty: I prefer peace to war, and would really rather make my own than steal it from someone else. When I fight in glorious battle, I have no qualms about looting towns afterward, but lets be clear; starting a war is a far greater matter than wielding a weapon. Sorry, I've never really gotten past the beach. I actually get seasick, so I'm happy for dry land. @Sarazon: I wield a Greatsword of excellent make--a private gift from my mentor, Tagrim, shortly before his passing. I've had it for four years. |
| darkdragonk04-03-07, 10:41 PM | You still did'nt answer the question aboput the meaning of life.;) |
| Amon_WinterfallIV04-04-07, 03:53 AM | Ah...I'm sorry, creating my own PrC for the Drunk DM Competitions. Anyway. (Grabs Mang's Hat) Meaning of Life: Pretty much, its to have a good time, raise little ones, die nobly, and party in heroism in Ysgard. Somewhere in the stars and planes in the sky is Ysgard--where my mentor, Tagrim went when he died, and where my dad might be going in a few more years. He's ailing, by the way--just a part of getting old. The point of life isn't to wind up like Pun-Pun. Power enables you to make a good life for yourself, but how much of his power does he actually need? Remember, even a rather common but battle hardened adventurer is going to be in the ranks of the upper class. How far do you need to go to marry a beautiful girl, raise a family, live a simple life and die an honorable death. Arguably, I can already do all of those things. No, adventuring is about self-actualization--about being all that you CAN be. You don't need to be the strongest hero in the region, the nation, or the world to have a good living, something more basic drives you forward, the idea that you want to reach your full potential. When you feel that you can go no further, its time to head home. The Meaning of life is a philosophical question, and if anyone could definitively prove an answer, we'd be at a great disadvantage. I don't claim that I'm right, but I'll tell you that neverending feasting and a preparations for a glorious battle await me. Whether its going to be neverending boredom, fun with elemental energy, or simple benevolence for you, I wish you well. |
| ShadowDragon868504-04-07, 08:50 AM | @ShadowDragon. Mang, It is a well-known fact in this world that those who are stupdendiously endowed in one realm of personal achievement are handicapped in another. Wizards, for example, are famous for being all brains, and no brawn. You have intellect on par with a wizard; therefor, one must wonder where your deficit is paid in full. Is it in the realm of Charisma? I think not, as you are both well-spoken and intelligent. Wisdom? I do not think so, for a poor quality of wisdom would likewise not lend itself to your manner of speech. Therefor, one must conclude that your deficit is paid in full from some realm of physical activity - either raw brawn, bodily coordination, or fortitude. Even a mighty and ageless Dragon pays for this defecit in full - while wise, charismatic and strong, intelligent, agile and with fortitude beyond compare (save for that damn Tarrasque... @%^)*@^ing Tarrasque...), we pay for that deficit in age. Take an adventuring hero of any experiance, and a Dragon of equavilent age and experiance, and the hero will emerge victorious every time. We pay for our deficit in terms of time and age. Humans, on the other hand, have no such drawback; but they are not gifted with the incredible potency of a Dragon, either. That, or you have been very lucky in the realm of magical gifts and enchanted manuals; who am I to begrudge you so? That said, I have one more question, for now: Mang, What is best in life? |
| aceland04-04-07, 01:59 PM | who makes your shoes? |
| Amon_WinterfallIV04-04-07, 05:41 PM | @Shadowdragon: I mean no disrespect, but your tradeoffs do miss the point somewhat. A dragon's long lifespan is a gift--the more the live, the more to learn, to feel, to do. And a dragon as old as a slyvan elf is not disadvantaged. Not at all. The point is that trade-offs aren't the full picture. Trade-offs exist in life, but they aren't the whole story--there is a means to objectively increase ones power. If you must know, a childhood accident makes it very painful for me to walk--I can, but I'll never be able to jump and dance like the others in my tribe. If I do desire to find adventure, I might try to compensate for it as I can. And about your question: The best thing in life is the furfillment of your dreams. To beat the odds, to achieve the legendary, or even the simple things of finding that special someone, this, to me, is the best in life. To achieve a dream is to literally shape the world--not a large shaping, or a painful change, but to leave the future that you've done something meaningful. @Aceland: I don't know who makes the shoes. A Elven peddler visits my tribe monthly, trades things for beaver pelts. My sandals were a part of one of these trades. Where the peddler gets them, I don't know. |
| Thulsa Doom04-04-07, 06:15 PM | Hmmmm...I thought the default barbarian answer to the question "What is best in life?" was: "Crush your enemies, see them driven before you, hear the lamentation of their women!" Also, new questions: What kind of undergament do you use so that your manly parts don't freeze in cold weather? With all barbarians being illiterate, how do you trade for goods and not get swindled for money? Are there any short and weak barbarians (human ones, not gnome or halfling)? What do you call your axe (or sword) ? |
| Tonio04-04-07, 06:19 PM | With all barbarians being illiterate, how do you trade for goods and not get swindled for money? First off... most, not all, barbarians are illiterate. (Mang himself admitted to being able to read and write.) Second, in D&D currency isn't paper printed with numerical values, it's coins with a certain weight of a certain metal. No need to be literate to know this coin is gold and weighs what it should. |
| Amon_WinterfallIV04-04-07, 06:49 PM | @Thulsa: Perhaps. There are definitely those firebrands who would do exactly that (and would be all over causing 'lamentations'), but I don't think Kord would approve of mistreating their womenfolk. It's not what I would do. If the men make war, we will fight; but there is no heroism in hurting their families. Undergarments: I'm not sure what you'd call it, I guess. In cold weather, well, I wear multiple layers of clothing over my entire body. Generally, woolen clothing is best, on the bottom. Call it what you will--"Thermals?" I don't know, I'm not a tailor. Unfortuantely, being able to read and write doesn't stop you from being swindled. It means that you're in trouble when you see a contract. But, that doesn't mean you can't size up what you buy. Short Barbarians: More than you'd expect. In general, the short barbarians are the ones who feel that they have something to prove--and they often do. Weak Barbarians: Very rare. If you can't really swing an Axe or climb a tree, you can do the finework of crafting, or other work. I guarentee that there is no shortage of work in the tribe; its just that weak members won't be trained to fight, they'll be taught something else, perhaps even from the priest. My sword doesn't have a name. Sorry, but it's enough for me to recognize it as Tagrim's sword. if he named it, I don't know what the name is. |
| Shan_TheBabau_Burke04-06-07, 02:02 AM | So, Meng, Is this like "Dear Shabby does DnD"? |
| LivingShadow04-06-07, 06:09 PM | Mang, What is you oppinion of mages in general and their uses in the battlefield? Any thoughts on the undead? |
| Kearif04-06-07, 06:37 PM | How do you feel about combat tactics? Empirical (sp?) processes and the like to find effective combat techniques, as well as the practical things such as flanking. Raging makes barbarians vulnerable to attacks, so a barbarian should do anything he or she can to improve the odds of both hitting the opponent and not getting hit by the opponent. Flanking and using the high ground to gain an advantage are some tactic my people of been using forever. In an antimagic zone, which is more effective: A fighter, or a barbarian? Either would be effective in an antimagic zone because neither uses magic outside of magical equipment. Fighter and Barbarians are very much equally matched, there are thing I can only dream about doing that many fighters do without even thinking. Tell me, Mang, what is the correct relationship between a barbarian and nature? Is nature there to be revered? Subjugated? Endured? There is no correct relationship between a Barbarian and Nature. My people revere Nature as a divinity second only to the god of strength. This is because we believe that Nature is there to provide for us and to test our strength. Other tribes might fully worship Nature, fear Nature, or ignore it all together. Subjugating Nature is an idea that "civilized people" think is possible, however I believe they are wrong. Why did you not think that going arcane is a far superior choice? Do you not realize that raging could lend yourself to a tactical disadvantage, when faced with enemy in waves? What are your thoughts on being godlike in terms of intel but not being able to read? I was not born with the gift for sorcery and I've never patient enough to learn wizardry. Waves of enemies are what Sorcerers (and Wizards) are for, and no one ever said that raging should be the first thing a barbarian does in combat. II am literate; see, I even writing to prove it. Mang, am me smush gobleen wit big stik or am me smush gobleen wit clerik? What? Speaking of which, what about female barbarians? Are they equally represented in the profession, or are their more males? How do male barbarians view female ones? On a potentially related note, do you prefer to date fellow barbarians, or other classes? If you date within your class, do you often "talk shop"? Do you define yourself more as a barbarian or as a... I don't think you ever mentioned your species... (human?)... or neither? Oh, and how do you pronounce your name? Does it rhyme with "fang," or is it more like "mahng"? Male/Female relations, like most things, defer from tribe to tribe. In my tribe pregnant women, mothers, and children are aggressively protected, but other than that men are when are equal in responsibilities and opportunities. There is a common joke in my tribe about women warriors raging outside of battle, but I won't go any further on that. My mother was a wizard and father was barbarian. For my people in general love does not concern itself with profession. I am human and yes, my name rhymes with fang. Mang, Do you feel that your uncanny amounts of intelligence have handicapped your other abilities - such as the ability to do battle, to resist trickeries of the mind, your ability to tough out long and ardous ordeals, and so forth? No Do you prefer making your own, or making off with other people's? Could you please explain that question further Do your people have a proud, sea-going tradition, or are you a strictly land-based Barbarian? Would you prefer it the other way 'round, or not? My tribe lives in the Vinewood Forest, though we call it The Forest Of The Mother. I have served on a ship and enjoyed it greatly, but like the bard says, "There's no place like home." Whats your favored weapon? I have a pair of cherished longsword, my father favored his greatsword, and my friend, Malor, uses a falchion. who makes your shoes? I don't know, I hope it wasn't the gnolls I killed just before I found my boots. Hmmmm...I thought the default barbarian answer to the question "What is best in life?" was: "Crush your enemies, see them driven before you, hear the lamentation of their women!" Kearif: It is comments like that one that started this thread. Barbarians can have rich cultures that are very different from the world of Fighter, Wizards, and Rogues. Yet people continue to play them as mindless, marauding killing machines. |
| Kearif04-06-07, 08:54 PM | The following questions will not be answered because they have no relevance to the topic: What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow? How do you beat Pun-Pun, and what is the meaning of life? How many questions can you answer in a single podcast? What is the best way to begin a strongly worded message to a retailer who has wronged you? What are the answers to the following questions: Why? When? Where? If a barbarian falls down in a forest, and no one is around to hear it, does it still make a sound? What is the circumference of a moose?! What is integral theory? What is your favorite move recently? Is this like "Dear Shabby does D&D"? when are you coming back to answer these questions? I do apologize for the delay, I’ve been trying to stop an insane ulitharid from filping the world inside-out. How many people does one barbarian kill in a day? That really depends how many people in day try to kill that one barbarian. How do barbarians suppress vestibular or equilibrium abnormalities during a kill so that aerial acrobatic maneuvers don't cause them to fall victim themselves? Do you ever get tired of being a barbarian? No. Can a barbarian create an axe so large that they themselves cannot wield it? Possibly, he that barbarian was a really good smith. How much sleep does a barbarian get? One nights worth a night. How often do barbarians bathe? As often as barbarians decide to. How many different kinds of weapons do barbarians use? Up to as many as a barbarian can carry, but not more than a barbarian needs. What do barbarians do for money? There are this small round shiny metal things that barbarians use for money, I think they’re called coins, have you heard of them? What makes a barbarian so special? I am a barbarian, that makes barbarians kind of special to me. Why do barbarians kill in the first place? Why can't barbarians love instead? Barbarians can love. Barbarians kill because barbarians feel they have a reason to, you may as well ask the same about wizards or rogues. Of all the barbarian skills in the world, which is the deadliest? Intimidation. If a barbarian could be a food, what food would it be? Depends, I think I’d be shark steaks; they’ve got a really strong flavor and fish is brain food. How do you see your rage, your boost, is it anger, is it tribal spirits, what is it that drives your prowess and surges in battle? It is a mixture of raw anger and the will to survive anything. I normally use it with when a friend is in danger of not surviving whatever we’re fighting. What advantages and disadvantages does your average barbarian face in different types of combat? Barbarians tend to make poor archers, but that doesn’t stop us from trying. What other barbarians have you met that really left an impression on you (literal or figurative) Every member of my tribe is very important to me and I have never had to fight another tribe. I have no scars from practice combat, but that is primarily due to my tribes excellent clerics What kind of undergarment do you use so that your manly parts don't freeze in cold weather? I live in a tropical rain forest. I only encounter cold weather on adventures and those times I always have a cold weather outfit. With all barbarians being illiterate, how do you trade for goods and not get swindled for money? Some barbarians can’t read, but that doesn’t mean we can’t count. Are there any short and weak barbarians (human ones, not gnome or halfling)? Not That I’ve yet met, but short does not equal weak. What do you call your axe (or sword)? I have two longswords an I call them longswords. I do speak common. What is you opinion of mages in general and their uses in the battlefield? I am sometimes jealous of mages, but I’d never join a party that didn’t have at least one. My mother was a wizard from civilized lands, and while I’ve never learned magic, I’ve underrated it either. Any thoughts on the undead? One word, Abominations. Mang, What is best in life? The best things in life are good food, good drink, and better friends. |
| Maekrix_Waere04-07-07, 01:12 AM | Kearif, just telling you, I ganked all those questions from Ask A Ninja Episode 16(?)--Ninja Omnibus. The name of the post was so similar I couldn't resist. Just FYI. |
| Amon_WinterfallIV04-07-07, 02:57 AM | Okay, Mang. First of all, sorry for badly misrepresenting your views--I'd thought you'd ditched your own thread, so I thought why not try to salvage it. The Sub would like to ask you a few questions: How do you deal with an airborne Psion of roughly your level of power, assuming that negotation was impossible and hostilitilies were immenent? If you (or perhaps a band of warriors from your tribe) defeated an enemy tribe in combat, how would you treat the defeated tribespeople? An enemy army outnumbers your own by roughly two to one, and their commander is compentent but cautious. Given the ability to choose your ground and to decide relevant tactics, how would you defeat a numerically superior and intelligent army? Ask these things because, quite frankly, I've only got a 17 Intelligence, and you are, therefore, demonstrably smarter than myself. Again, I hope there are no hard feelings about me taking over the early part of this thread. |
| Khadmus04-07-07, 08:25 AM | Are the swords of the Elves or the swords of the Dwarves of better quality? Of better function? Of better price? Support your answer with details. |
| ShadowDragon868504-08-07, 02:10 AM | I can't answer FOR Mang, but in my esteemed opinion, the best swords are those made by the most powerful priest/wizard/psion. That said, both elven and dwarven swords, assuming we are speaking of the blade before enchantment, have their uses. A dwarven blade is far more likely to be made of Adamantium, and thus be the perfect device for cleaving through stone and mortar - and pesky golems. Although, most dwarven bladed weapons are likely to be axes - and there is very little as re-assuring as twirling a dwarven-forged, adamantium battle-axe just before you cleave the blade into something. (Note to self: Try and get Adamantium claw-sheathes made) An elven blade, on the other hand, is most likely to be manufactured of mithril silver - which, I have found, is superior to alchemical silver, in that it is lighter, stronger, and has not the same penchant for dulling the blade as an alchemical silvering treatment. ((Note to self - Try and get Mithril claw-sheathes)) There is a purpose for each sort of blade, although I must confess that swords of elven make tend to be lost on a Dragon - stronger than anything, but not terribly graceful, we tend to do better, when forced to engage in combat in humanoid form, with a large, two-handed axe or sword of dwarven make. |
| Khadmus04-08-07, 06:48 AM | [Out of Character I like keen swords better for really strong people (if, for some reason, I was playing a dragon for example). The Elves' swords from Races of the Wild are all 18-20 [And finessable, but that's not relevant], so I like them.] Therefore, I must do the same in-character. |
| Aegeu04-12-07, 06:03 PM | Psst, ShadowDragon! No such thing as "mithril silver". Mithril is a metal which looks like silver, but has no special ability to overcome DR. Alchemical silver overcomes DR but has a penalty to attack because it dulls the blade. You can't use mithril to overcome DR/silver (though I wish you could). |
| ShadowDragon868504-12-07, 06:06 PM | I'm not Mang. And are YOU going to tell a Dragon what his or her weapon material may do? Anyway, as a houserule I use, Mithril is a superior silver. If all you need is an emergency, unenchanted weapon to overcome the rare lycanthrope DR, you use alchemical. But to make there be an actual REASON to make a weapon out of Mithril, I let it overcome Silver DR when made as a weapon. YMMV. |
| Kearif04-16-07, 06:24 PM | First of all, sorry for badly misrepresenting your views--I'd thought you'd ditched your own thread, so I thought why not try to salvage it. You really were very close on some things. I'm working a post to clear up the few things you made mistakes on; it's mostly names and stuff. How do you deal with an airborne Psion of roughly your level of power, assuming that negotation was impossible and hostilitilies were immenent? While I have encountered magic of many sorts, I have never dealt with psionics. That said, I'd probably, at least try to, slice 'n' dice his ***. If you (or perhaps a band of warriors from your tribe) defeated an enemy tribe in combat, how would you treat the defeated tribespeople? You were very close to the answer for this one in a previous posting. You said something about only killing those who fight us. An enemy army outnumbers your own by roughly two to one, and their commander is compentent but cautious. Given the ability to choose your ground and to decide relevant tactics, how would you defeat a numerically superior and intelligent army? It might depend on why this army is our enemy. Once when my father was a boy an army came to remove or destroy us. They were acting under orders and we captured their leaders at night and showed the soldiers that we were not their enemies. After they'd managed to convince their king that we are not enemies but nor are we to be messed with we returned the officers, except for one who fell in love with a women in the tribe. Are the swords of the Elves or the swords of the Dwarves of better quality? Of better function? Of better price? My swords are dwarf-make, they were made by a friend of my father's. In my experience elves make lighter weapons better than dwarves and dwarves make heavier weapons better than elves. Both are normally excellent quality and function, but dwarves do tend to raise their prices more than they probably should. |
| ShadowDragon868504-16-07, 10:07 PM | Dear Mang - What's more fun, singing or dancing? |
| Kearif04-17-07, 08:12 PM | Singing, much less chance of having an awkward momment with an attractive stranger |
| metamind04-18-07, 12:47 PM | *nobody got the joke* |
| Nelagend04-18-07, 09:05 PM | Mang, My fighter friends have found that, as we grow more powerful, they are often "kited" by enemy wizards above ground, who use foul and partially irresistable magic rays to make them too tired to fully nock their longbows, while flying directly upwards. This rapidly puts them at the offending wizard's mercy unless they can luck out and hit the wizard in the eye with an arrow. Have you ever had to deal with this tactic, and what is the best way for a barbarian to contribute against a flying wizard using exhaustion and fell weakening effects? |

Airborne spellcasters are getting the better of his warrior friends by flying above the range of blades and even bows, raining spells which deblidate and destroy at will. He wants to know how you would reccomend they counter this threat, Mang. |

He wants to know how you would reccomend they counter this threat, Mang. Simple. Liberal ranks in the Jump skill. With the Barbarian's increased speed, jumping is easier for them. Of course, for a ninja, (espescially one of the Sarine order) jumping is incredibly easier. Or, ask your draconic friends to fly up and eat the caster. I look forward to jumping you soon! |
| Goldenmaxter04-24-07, 08:15 PM | WOW... that barbarian sure does a great job of answering questions... |
| Mock2604-24-07, 08:36 PM | When will these annoying "Ask..." threads stop being posted? :D |
| Prator_the_Legendary04-24-07, 09:27 PM | Presumably when there are no more questions. That said, I have three: 1. I know, fighters are not impressive compared to primary casters. I can live with that, because it means fighters are still superior in AMF. But how well do fighters compare to other combat classes? 2. I'm told that Incarnum classes suck/don't scale well/are useless/can't do anything another class couldn't do better. How much of that is true? 3. If you succeed in a grapple, can to pin in the same round? And once a person is pinned, can you "silence" them in same round they were pinned? Can grapple, pin, and silence in one move? |
| Endarrion04-24-07, 09:32 PM | When will these annoying "Ask..." threads stop being posted? :D Good question. Maybe you should ask Copy the Cat. This questions seems right up his alley, so I'm told. |
| PwnageLlama04-25-07, 01:09 AM | What is your favorate color? What is the 500th digit of pi? How much pie can a barbarian eat in one sitting? Are there barbarian midgits? Are they called marbarians? |
| jessewik04-26-07, 11:13 PM | can a one armed man duel wield if he has an artificial replacement limb? |
| Zousha_Omenohu04-26-07, 11:33 PM | To the noble barbarian, I was just wondering what the average barbarian feels about practitioners of the arcane. I'm sure you can identify with sorcerers, whose power is inbred and harnessed by instinct alone, but what of wizards like myself? While the primal fury of the barbarian is a terror to behold (I should know, I travel with one, though he appears to have taken a few to many maces in the face), a powerful wizard could find many ingenious ways to defeat such a foe. You must realize that I mean no disrespect, but what sort of tactics do you employ when facing a well-trained spellcaster? I assure you that I would never attempt to exploit such knowledge. I know very little in the sciences involving the direct manipulation of elemental energies. I prefer to use my magic to uncover that which others do not wish seen. Sincerely, Zousha Omenohu, Diviner of the Second Rank |
| Draginja04-27-07, 11:32 AM | Are there barbarian midgits? Are they called marbarians? Hey! That is a Ninja skill, not a Barbarian skill! They're called "Ningistics", not "Barbaristics"! Stop confusing Ninjas and Barbarians! By the way, do you have any problems with your eyesight? He already answered that one. He said yes, but they are rare. |
| tharivol26604-27-07, 06:54 PM | I have always wondered if the Barbarian union offers health care/insurance. Do they? |

I know very little in the sciences involving the direct manipulation of elemental energies. I prefer to use my magic to uncover that which others do not wish seen. I believe I can answer both these questions simultaneously. Firstly, there are many more magic items that protect against spells than there are that protect against swords. Ring of Spell Turning is a favorite of mine. Secondly, when dealing with enemy casters, I useless end up protecting an allied caster from our foe's minions or I do what dragons do to enemy casters, KILL THEM QUICK! I was just wondering what the average barbarian feels about practitioners of the arcane. I'm sure you can identify with sorcerers, whose power is inbred and harnessed by instinct alone, but what of wizards like myself? In the mean time, look in the PH. [QUOTE=PwnageLlama]What is your favorate color? What is the 500th digit of pi?How much pie can a barbarian eat in one sitting? Are there barbarian midgits, are they called marbarians? Green, 9, Depends on the barbarian and an how much pie is available; Yes there are short barbarians, not they're not called marbarians. can a one armed man duel wield if he has an artificial replacement limb? Yes, there is a magic item that would replace a removed arm. A character should be able to dual wield using that item. |
| Kearif06-16-07, 05:41 PM | I await more questions about art, nature, magic, culture and combat. |
| esteigs06-21-07, 06:39 PM | what is your favorite magic item? what magic item do you use the most? What is your favorite magical weapon property? how about armor? would you rather have a ring of protection +5 or an amulet of nat armor+5? Why? |
| Kearif06-22-07, 05:57 PM | what is your favorite magic item? I love my Travel Cloak. Being from a tropical rainforest the most of the rest of the world seems fairly cold, but with the cloak everything is a nice comfertable temperature. Also, with the cloak, I have food and water in the most barrien and desolite of places and setting up and breaking down my tent is as quick and easy as pulling a string. what magic item do you use the most? Many of my magic items are constant use, like my Travel Cloak, but other than those I use my swords the most. Parties want me with largly due to my pair of swords. What is your favorite magical weapon property? Speed, the more to try the more or succeed, or the more you swing the more you hit. how about armor? Fortifition. would you rather have a ring of protection +5 or an amulet of nat armor+5? Why? the ring works for touch armor and the amulet doesn't, that's why I have a Ring of Protection |

| Einvaldurinn_mikli06-22-07, 06:16 PM | What are your thoughts on Vikings Mang? |
| Kearif06-27-07, 12:35 PM | What is your opinion on totem barbarians, totemists, and totem rangers? I have never heard of totemists or totem rangers and I don't really know any totem barbarians. (Kearif: I don't use totem barbarians in my games.) What are your thoughts on Vikings Mang? (Kearif: The are no Vikings in dungeons and dragons just as there is no Europe, Mang's answer is based on barbarians from the dark elf trilogy.) Those Barbarians have a sad tendency to be little men, not just in statue. I'm yet to meet a happy barbarian women from the north. |
| esteigs07-06-07, 04:05 PM | Who do you like to adventure with the most? who do you adventure with them most? Why? |
| o_b_livion07-06-07, 05:52 PM | Mang, Having a hobby is a healthy for one person. But some people spend too much time with their hobbies and have allowed that to define, no POSSES them and call it Life. For example, people who powergame and figure out ways to increase their chances of winning, turning the game more into "how often can I win in every encounter!?" Or those who would rather play the game than do a simple hygienic ritual called a shower. Wait, do barbarians shower? Or do you just grab the closest nice smelling pixie and rub it all over your underarm as per, a deodorant? Besides those obvious examples, what im asking is, what should we do these extremes? Beat them with a stick? Give them instructions on how to take a shower along with Dummies Guide to Dating? |
| Kearif07-07-07, 07:14 PM | Who do you like to adventure with the most? who do you adventure with them most? Why? I have many friends from different cultures and different walks of life. I prefer adventuring with them; people I'm just meeting for the first time tend to make insulting assumptions about me. I tend to work with my friends. At the moment I'm traveling with a Halfling Pirate and a Half-Fiend Bard. do barbarians shower? Or do you just grab the closest nice smelling pixie and rub it all over your underarm as per, a deodorant? (Kearif: No one showers in my D&D world there is no indoor plumbing and those people with enough resources to had indoor plumbing would rather be bathed by attactive slaves [or paided servents, depending on alignment] with soth cloths than stand under a high pressure hot water hose now back to Mang) I didn't there were particularly nice smelling pixies. I usually just jump in a near by streem or lake. |
