| Evil DM Mk304-22-07, 08:21 PM | OK I know this is a take off two other threads but if anyone want's a pragmetic answer to a question about cult-hunting or monster slaying or about paladinhood, please ask. But first a question I am allways getting bothered about. What is the differance between a Blackguard and a Greyguard? I have to start by explaining what a Whiteguard is. Whiteguard is an archaic term to describe a paladin. When the concepts of good and evil where young paladinhood was issued to entire cites at once. However a group of fiends, lead by a Fiendish dragon known as Krielsh of shadow, corrupted a lot of the paladins that where not quite what they ought to be. These became Blackguards. After this disaster the restirictions placed on paladins where tightened hugely. However this left a problem. There are many things that must be done but paladins cannot do them. Greyguards can. We are, and this is not a point of pride but a fact, selected from the most dedicated and commited of paladins. We are given certain liberty of action but are also kept under constant servailance. We, along with shadow bane inquisitors, are also those who are most often sent after the fallen and corrupt. |
| High Octane04-22-07, 08:27 PM | Greyguards are good. Lawful good. However they also commit acts which a paladin would fall over. However they commit these acts in order to promote good, and their country and all that. In short, they are Jack Bauer from 24. |
| Evil DM Mk304-22-07, 08:30 PM | Greyguards are good. Lawful good. However they also commit acts which a paladin would fall over. However they commit these acts in order to promote good, and their country and all that. In short, they are Jack Bauer from 24. Well I don't know who that is, and very few paladins of any stripe are so stupid as to tie themselves to a nation, that often leads to conflicts of intrest, but I think you have the jist of it yes. (This is ment to be in in character "agony aunt style thread like the other two.) |
| High Octane04-22-07, 08:46 PM | Jack Bauer is an agent in the show 24, and is sort of famous because in order to prevent a terrorist attack, he tortured a terrorist to get information out of him. Torture for example, would not be condoned for use by a paladin, and in actuality a greyguard would have to atone, but unlike a paladin he could do it without real lasting reprecusions (shown through the dropping of the XP cost from an atonement spell used to restore him) Unlike a paladin, a greyguard can temporarily betray his code of conduct in the name of the greater good. Their purposes are different. Paladin serves as an ideal, while the greyguard uses his powers to perform the gritty work that must be done but not everyone would find pristine. Of course, they cant enjoy it, if they grossly go against the code of conduct and ddo something truly unforgivable, they wont get atoned. Basically they HAVE to be even more strong willed than a paladin because they have the right to do those horrible things yet they have to have the will to not fall into enjoying them. They have to stand on the edge of darkness and even venture into it and still stay strong. Those that do are doomed to have nightmares and sleepless nights about the things they have done. |
| Evil DM Mk304-22-07, 08:49 PM | I am fully aware of the nature of my calling... Torture is a very dangerous one of course as the feeling of power over another is documented as one of the main causes of falling. Tyrany is such an easy trap to fall into is it not? |
| metamind04-22-07, 08:54 PM | And here come the rip offs! :) Well, I guess its okay to start making my own little "ask metamind" thread now. Good luck to you Evil DM Mk3 on your thread! lol, sorry for this randomness, I was going to ask a question, but changed my mind. |
| Sareld04-22-07, 09:06 PM | Pfft, second thoughts and regrets are for loosers. But you say that grey guards can break their holy codes once and a while for the sake of the greater good, huh? Well then, allow me to introduce myself The name is Xana Starshine, and I run a small thieves guild in the human city of Caergoth, despite being of Silvanesti birth myself. Since the start of my career half a century ago, I have done my very best to minimize the amount of dead security personel that I leave behind, as I find it unethical to kill common men who are just doing their job, and though some prudes disapprove of it, I have specialized in using enchantment magic* to neutralize resistance tempoarily rather than to use my blade to neutralize the resistance permanently. Is there any chance that I could scratch your back, and you could scratch mine? I guarantee that my guild will leave about 75% less orphans and widdows than our closest competitor, and if you agree to leave us alone and hunt our rivals instead, we could even donate a little token of 5% of our loot to your organization, so that you might buy more food for the poor or build a new church or whatever floats your boat.. its a win/win for us, what say you? * Dont tell the high sorcerors. They are almost as alpha november alpha lima as paladins, and they seems rather obeseeive about forcing people like me to join their nerdy club. |
| Evil DM Mk304-22-07, 09:20 PM | Well I am primarily involved in dealing with heritics and those who dabble in the dark forces of evil, those who seek and bind the powers of the lower planes. I also tend to end up fighting against the Dark Elves more often that you might expect. I find your respect for life also refreshing and comendable. However theft is a crime against both the person who is stolen from and against the civilisation that that person belongs to. Theft is an act of anarchy and disorder and disorder breads suffering and hardship. I strongly advise that you give up your life of crime and, although I realise this second point is utterly unlikely, hand yourself over to the authorites. I thank you for indicating in which population center you operate as well as your modus operendai as a friend of mine, Shadowband inquisitor Vorshk, is between quests. He is a charming dwarf who specialises in breaking up theives rings and is known to much of the underworld as "The undertaker". I would remind you that when he offers you a chance to surender, that will be your one and only chance to avoid combat. Please don't be a fool. |
| Zousha_Omenohu04-22-07, 09:50 PM | I was wondering what your opinion was on how some paladins behave. According to what I've heard, many look at paladins and immediately assume that they are supposed to fall from grace. That you should only become a paladin if you plan on becoming a Blackguard later in your career. I've also heard rumors of some paladins who merely use their detect evil ability, and smite whoever registers. Why do some paladins behave this way? I personally find such behavior barbaric. A good Detect Thoughts spell can reveal infinitely more information. I have not had the pleasure of counting a paladin as an ally, though that's more due to my parentage than anything else (my father, as I've mentioned to Shadow the Dragon, is a lich, but upon Shadow's advice I don't speak with him under any circumstances anymore). Why do people immediately assume that any paladin they meet is going to be unreasonable, prudish, paranoid or all of the above (especially the Order of Illumination, who seem to have a reputation for fanaticism)? As a Grey Guard, I believe you are enough of an outside observer that you can answer these questions without bias. If I have offended you in any way, I sincerely apologize. |
| LeuktheSavior04-22-07, 10:09 PM | I am Leuk. I am a Favored soul to the Iron Priest, Wanderer of the eternal paths, Kismet's tangible. I have wandered through the twisted halls of the nine hells of baator, the majestic fields of Celestia, the evershifting chaos of Limbo and the structures of Mechanus, and the plane of concordant opposition. I have seen the radical perceptions of each alignment, and have come to the decision that moral ambiguity is not a strength, especially of the virtuous followers to the Gods. If you must act outside of your alignment to serve the greater good, then you are also working to serve the forces opposing your God. How can a warrior of Pelor justify torture or enforcing Black Hand tactics and still believe he is working for his God. |
| Evil DM Mk304-23-07, 07:06 AM | According to what I've heard, many look at paladins and immediately assume that they are supposed to fall from grace.Well obviously this is not the case. That you should only become a paladin if you plan on becoming a Blackguard later in your career. I've also heard rumors of some paladins who merely use their detect evil ability, and smite whoever registers. Why do some paladins behave this way?Becasue many paladins lack that thing that most people forget that paladins need. Most people seem to forget that paladins are chosen becasue they are expetional. It is a weighty burden to know that you are above the adverige by a significant amount and it can lead to arrogance and short-sightedness. A paladin must be srtong, agile, tough, wise and charismatic. He is often expected to be well educated too. Many young paladins leave their orders (an important note, orders of paladins are a silly misconcetion as paldins are chosen, we do not chose, paladins who are trained by orders come from knightly orders or similar orginisations. I find paladins who leave their places of training to form orders can be dnagerously elitist.) understanding that they are suposed to defeat evil but lacking guidance they make this missconception. What every paladin needs is a suport network. No warrior is an island, entire of him self. I know paladins, clerics, other servants of the righteous orders and merely noble minded peopel the world over. They are my friend and my touchstone to reality, the reminder as to why I fight.I have not had the pleasure of counting a paladin as an ally, though that's more due to my parentage than anything else (my father, as I've mentioned to Shadow the Dragon, is a lich, but upon Shadow's advice I don't speak with him under any circumstances anymore).Your perantage should have nothing at all to do with it. Again not intending to be arogant, merly to state fact, a apaldin is a stanch and true allay in times of need. I am in fact curently assembling allies to help me track down a cult to the lord of lies that seems to be operating inside the Ironfist citystate. If you are in the area please contact me. The fact is that many paladins are righteous, sanctemonious and pios. These behaviours are often missinterpreted. I prefer to take the aproach of leading as an example, not an ideal. In truth however many of the opinions poeple develop of paladins are in part based on their own weakness. Is a paladin who refuses to allow you to steal unreasonable? No. He merly serves his purpose. Please remember that when you are dealing with paladins you are dealing wth a man (or indeed woman) who carries a lot of weight on his sholders. There are few vocations that are quite so loanley. I am Leuk. If you must act outside of your alignment to serve the greater good, then you are also working to serve the forces opposing your God. How can a warrior of Pelor justify torture or enforcing Black Hand tactics and still believe he is working for his God. I am not working for a god, let me clear that up. Although I worship SEVERAL deiaties I, like most paladins, am not direcly sponsoured by a specific deiaty. I recall that when I recived the call in a dream I was offered it by a lion headed solar angel. Second I do not claim that moral ambiguity is a strength or a weakness. It is, as shadow is so fond of chanting, a tool, nothing more nothing less. But let me give you a real life objective example. One of the first missions I undertook as a Grey guard, the first in fact that lead me to my current path of fiend hunting and also lead me to Arthur, my holy avenger, concerned a monarch. The king (that is to say the ruler who I shall not name for reasons of tact) had been corrupted by a devil, his elite guard where all steel devils. He planed to start large scale raids of nerby areas, slaughtering the inhabitants and using their wealth to create a portal to the lower realms. I snuck into the castle and assumed the role of a farrier, note that even this is outside the code of the paladin as I was required to lie about by past, to gain information. It was clear I was unable to attack the devils safley, they when too numerous and their captain was too powerful. The princess was of mostly (I think she may "know" shadow) unempeachable character and would be able to take control if her father died due to the exact wording of the devils mission. I turned assassin and poisoned the king in his sleep, the devils where forced to leave by their orders and countless lives where saved. The princess let me keep arthur who I had found in a back corner of the armoury as a gift of gratitude. Was I behaving as a paladin? No. But if I had waited for assistance I would have allowed the first raids to kill hundreds and if I had sttod against htem I would have died horribly. I do not claim to be perfect. I claim to be nessissary. |

If you are in the area please contact me. Thank you for the invitation, but I'm afraid I must decline, as that would be violating the geas I am currently trapped under, and thus I'd be more a burden than anything else. Thank you for clearing up those questions. |

That comment amuses me, as a dwarf would clearly lack the speed to even get close to myself or anyone of any significance to my operations. Also, though a dwarf is probably the best suited creature in all of the world to find my hidden lair, I seriously doubt that he will have any luck on this mission. Many have tried, but unfortunately none of those few poor souls who actually succeded are alive today. I ask of you as the good soul you obivously are, call back your friend and let him live to do good elsewhere.. it would be a terrible but nessecary loss if something was to happen to him. Also, there is at least one thieves guild in every major city, so why does your friend Vorshk whish to travel all the way to Caergoth just die in his attempt to break up mine? Especially as you know for a fact that the guild that would take over our turf should your dwarf friend succeed would produce more death and needless violence that us? This is what I dont get about you paladin types.. you are so obsessive about fighting injustice that you end up causing more suffering than you prevent. Have you ever stopped and thought about what was better for the people of Caergoth? A violent thieves guild or a less violent one? You cant defeat every 'evil' thing you see... what you need to learn is to choose the lesser one once in a while. Now if you would escuse me, I need to go and lower the blades on my decapitation traps... bye for now. |
