At a loss. [Archive] - Wizards Community

02-25-07, 09:37 PM So my roomie is DMing. I like the man, and understand he's new to third ed. but it's infuriating. He introduces a new houserule almost every second round of combat and kinda seems to be using the "Dicking the PC's" mentality. To elaborate a little, as a cleric, I started with all of my orisons, and 4 1st level spells known at level 2, now that I've dinged third, I didn't learn any new spells... at all, I got no 2nd level and have to create my spells at the temple (Ie. not just learn them but figure out how to make the spell) and I can't just ask for help... tried that, the priest I was asking said "Figure it out in the library" which is the library I've been reading through since day one and he's told me nohting about what I need to know. on top of that my feats are going to take me weeks at a time to learn (It'll take me 2 weeks to learn dodge... so by level 4 I'll know my level 3 feat) I can only take skills in the things that he tells me I've used enough to learn things like that. That said it gets worse.

In Battle he gives the oposition 2 attacks a round when they have 1 melee weapon, they get both attacks on attacks of oppertunity and ocasionally have the chance to dodge attacks, as where we have not been given that. So we are facing goblins, with class levels, AC 16ish attack bonus of +4ish and around 20-25 HP. this is the best part, today we took out 10 of these dudes by our selves, it took every potion I had all my spells and 2 vails of really nice alchamists fire (2D6) that they got a reflex to totally dodge (goblins with evasion) and a human comander that was probablly level 3-4. well these guys were probablly CR 2 just based on what they had going for them. so we probablly should have netted about 7350 devide two... 3675 each... we got 600xp. and no treasure.

There are other issues, but those are less minor then the blatent dicking I feel I'm recieving. (this is compounded by me starting at level 2 as opposed to 2 level 3s and a level 4, one of which is a wizard that started with all 1st 2nd and 3rd level spells known. and the wizard has a higher AC and HP then I do, since the DM wouldn't let me start with anything better then leather armor) Now, I don't mind being the weekest character, I play well so I kinda make up for it, but I do mind being activly screwed... any advice?

Edit: hmmm, my advice to me is learn how to spell.

Edit 2: I just asked about the gear they were wearing and using, the town malitia picked it up and are using it so we can't sell that.

02-25-07, 09:55 PM Your DM is what my group likes to call the "no-DM guy". This is the guy we've allowed to try DMing but decided that they can not under any circumstances DM. We all like the guy, but he just can't manage to get DMing down. If the guys cool like you say then he probably won't care that much.

Did he have ridiculous house rules like these in his 2nd edition campaigns? If not, ask him why he is bringing them in now. If he did, why were you playing with him back then?

With these rules does he know 2nd edition or even any edition?

02-26-07, 12:24 AM Well i see two things wrong with the spells, first is that you are a cleric, clerics recieve their spells through prayer and divine inspiration, so there is no need for you to research your new spells, let alone develop the spells. Second is that if he really wants to make you develop spells (this is more for wizards than ne1 else) just use the rules in the epic level handbook, it tells you how to research and create spells in there, you just need to drastically reduce the Spellcraft check needed since you aren't epic.

With the second part, the DM is just being a dick and playing his own "how can I kill the players?" game.

02-26-07, 12:32 AM Tell him you want to play 3.x with the core rules, no house rules unless everyone agrees, else dont play. say you don’t like his rules, his understanding (or lack their of ) of balance, and that you would rather do something else with your time.

The truth hurts. it cuts as deep as any sword. at times though its your only option.

why are all the crazy ****ed up dms always from 2nd edition? all the dms I know from 2nd edition are more or less like or guy. Ones just nuts and cant understand the rules, another one was more of a story teller. That might have been fine, but if you want that kindo of game, do it with 2.x. The last dm was just a jerk, tried to stay with the rules, but couldn’t let go that the game was abstract. also he was very condescending and didn’t understand cr, character level and wealth level, and the balance that plays between them.

Steve and folding chairs are reserved for bad players. Bad DMs get the name Richard and the Hammergun.
