| Harpsi Chordial06-06-05, 02:22 PM | Can somebody please tell me about attack damage bonuses for strength in 3rd edition or v3.5 DND rules? I know about the "To Hit" bonus, but I do not see anything on damage bonus. Eg. I have a bararian with a 20 STR. He gets a +5 attack bonus because of his strength. How much bonus does he get to damage to damage (providing he successfully hits)? |
| Eliza_Stormwhisper06-06-05, 02:25 PM | Normal: 5 (equal to STR mod). Two-handed weapon: 7 (1.5x STR mod) Off-hand attack (if two-weapon fighting): 2 (1/2x STR mod) |
| Roreck06-06-05, 02:25 PM | he also gets a + 5 to damage and don't forget to add BAB to attack/to hit rolls I am pretty sure this is all in the phb somewhere |
| Temrek06-06-05, 02:26 PM | He gets the same bonus to damage as he gets to his attack bonus unless he weilds a weapon in two hands in which case he gets 150% of his strength bonus to damage. |
| Harpsi Chordial06-06-05, 02:30 PM | I did not see anything in the phb about this. So, you are saying that if my barbarian has a +5 to hit with a one-handed club, he also has a +5 to damage? Roreck, can you explain "BAB to attack/to hit rolls"?? I am new to 3rd edition and am trying to learn as quickly as possible. |
| IronHeart06-06-05, 06:18 PM | I'll answer your question about BAB. (Someone beat me if I'm wrong...) In order to figure out a character's total "to hit" score you do the following: Roll a d20 + BAB + str modifier + size modifier + miscellaneous modifiers BAB stands for Base Attack Bonus, and can be found in a table accompanying the character's class (found in the Player's Hand Book). For a level 1 barbarian it is +1. Str modifier is what you are talking about: +5 comes from the strength of 20. Size modifier comes from the character's size. If your character is medium size (ie. Human, etc) then this is zero. Miscellaneous modifiers would include if the character was using a masterwork weapon, magical weapon, etc. I'll assume this is zero as well. Thus, if the character's player rolled a ten on a d20, the total attack score would be: 10(d20) + 1(BAB) + 5(Str) = 16 Then the damage caused by the attack (if successful) would be rolled. For a one handed club: 1d6(club) + 5(Str bonus) *Note that this is for 3rd edition, I'm not sure if anything has been changed for v3.5 (and I doubt it has). |
| Harpsi Chordial06-06-05, 06:27 PM | Ironheart, thank you for this. I have a level 1 human barbarian with a 20 STR using a club. if this is the case my attack roll is 1d20+5 and my attack is 1d6+5. Is this right? I did not add the additional +1 as I saw nothing in the phb about barbarians getting an additional plus on to hit. |
| Roreck06-06-05, 06:38 PM | actually you should add the +1 barbarians do have a bab of +1 at first level your damage roll is corect though |
| snowlynx06-06-05, 06:47 PM | Yup....for melee attack roll, this is what you use: d20+base attack bonus + str bonus so in your case, that's d20 + 1 (base attack bonus) + 5 (strength bonus) = d20 +6 |
| Flushmaster06-06-05, 06:49 PM | if this is the case my attack roll is 1d20+5 and my attack is 1d6+5. Is this right? I did not add the additional +1 as I saw nothing in the phb about barbarians getting an additional plus on to hit. This is wrong. You add your base attack bonus to all attack rolls, and the only thing your class has to do with it is how high that bonus is. There is no not on barbarians specifically getting a BAB because all characters have a BAB and all characters add their BAB to all attacks they make. As Ironheart clearly explained, you add your BAB, your strength modifier, and any other applicable modifier to a d20 roll. Your attack rolls should be 1d20+6, assuming you're a medium sized character and level 1. If you have the Weapon Focus feat (applied to clubs) then you add an additional +1 to your attack rolls only when wielding a club (this falls under the category of "other modifiers"). Wielding the club in one hand you deal 1d6+5 damage. If you're not using your other hand for anything then you'd be better off wielding the club with two hands (no extra proficiency or such necessary) so you would deal 1d6+7 damage (5 X 1.5, rounded down, = 7). If you carry a shield or are holding a torch or otherwise using your other hand then this is obviously not an option, but if there's nothing else in that hand use it to add the extra damage. If you wield a ranged weapon (like a bow) you add your dexterity modifier to attack rolls instead of strength. You still add your base attack bonus because a ranged attack is still an attack and your BAB gets added to all attacks you make. Ranged attacks do not add additional damage from strength or dexterity. The exceptions are that strength modifiers are added to thrown weapon damage (throwing harder makes it hit harder) and damage from composite bowd made specifically with a strength bonus (more force to pull=arrow hits harder). |
