Hiyas again all... sorry for some many newbish questions, but after perusing the PHB a lil' more, it seems like our DM (a veteran player) may have more rules confused than I thought :)

I've got a few questions about AoO:

1) The PHB says you don't get an AoO when someone withdraws unless you move into another threatened square.

X= monster
Y= me

In a case of

X
Y

would I get an AoO if the monster moved back one space?

2)
X=monster
Y= me
Z= ally

what about if it was

Z

*X
*Y

and the monster moved up next to my ally? would my ally get an AoO?

3) If the set up was like situation one, would I get an AoO if the monster turned to run more than 5ft?

4) If I charged monster X in with this set up where X= monster, Y = me, and z= monster:

*Y

Z
*X

would monster Y get an AoO on me?

Sorry for being so long winded and if ya sat through all that, thank you very much :) Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

May I suggest that you go here. (http://wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/arch/rg)

Once there, I suggest that you read the two articles on attacks of opportunity and perhaps the articles on movement.

1) The PHB says you don't get an AoO when someone withdraws unless you move into another threatened square.

Withdraw is a specific action. They can only move. Any other actions draws the AoO.

You provoke Attacks of Opportunity when moving OUT of a threatened square. A 5' Step Never provokes an AoO. Remember that and you'll be fine.

X= monster
Y= me

In a case of

X
Y

would I get an AoO if the monster moved back one space?

No. 5' Step does not provoke.

2)
X=monster
Y= me
Z= ally

what about if it was

Z

*X
*Y

and the monster moved up next to my ally? would my ally get an AoO?

If the monster only needs a 5' step to get to your ally, then no, no AoO from you or the ally.

If it took more than 5' step to get to the ally, then yes, you would get an AoO. The ally would not.

This all assumes that no one has a reach weapon.

3) If the set up was like situation one, would I get an AoO if the monster turned to run more than 5ft?

If the monster moves more than a 5' step, you'd get the AoO.

4) If I charged monster X in with this set up where X= monster, Y = me, and z= monster:

*Y

Z
*X

would monster Y get an AoO on me?

LOL. I thought you were Y? Heh. In that above case, if you were to charge monster X, then MOnster Z would get an AoO when you moved out of one of his threatened squares. Monster X will not get the AoO.

Too many changing XYZ's :)

Thanks... that shows me how we've been doing it was wrong... now to go read those 2 articles and try to explain to my friend who DM's (and thinks he's always right) that we've been doing it wrong.

Another question. We had one of our guys and an enemy engaged face to face.

Our rogue moved to get behind the enemy, but since there was only a one space wide path for the rogue to go around, would she bring an AoO if she only moved 5' even if it were right next to the enemy?

What if she were to move an additional 5' diagonally to put herself behind the enemy that turn. Would that cause an AoO?

Thanks again for all the help... the game is seeming much more fair as I see the rules how they should be ;)

And those 2 articles were pretty helpful :)

You and the enemy fighting in a 10' wide corridor.

The rogue is standing next to you. She takes a 5' step forward and is now next to the enemy. Evn though she is leaving the threatend space, there is no AoO, as she is only moving a 5' step. She has to end the round there.

If she had (instead of taking the 5' step) moved forward and then diagonally behind the enemy, the enemy gets an AoO for her leaving the first threatened space.

Note also the difference between a "5 ft. step" and "moving 5 ft.". The 5 ft. step is a specific "no action" with specific restrictions. If those restrictions don't allow you to 5 ft. step, you can still move 5 ft. (or more) using a move action, but don't get any special privileges from doing so (and are subject to AoOs).

Withdraw is a special full-round action that allows you to double move without provoking an AoO for leaving your starting square. Any other squares that you leave provoke AoOs as normal.
