What are the in game effects of this ability? Or does it simply make the character stand out as a strong force of good (if a detect good spell is cast).

Simply makes you stand out, is all. It puts you in the good clerics and Paladins category of detect good rather than the good creature.

every "good" creature has an aura of good. Same goes for evil

however a normal being has a weak aura . You might have to be a 5 hd creature to raise your aura past 1 (I dont know the exact amount :P). however, a emissary of good or evil (such as a cleric) has an aura equil to his class level(s). In otherwords, if you use a detect good spell in a village of all good elves who are pacifists, you are going to see alot of good auras, but the priests and healers are going to have a stronger "glow".

A chapion of good that is a fighter would have to be much higher level than a champion of good paladin because the paladin is directly connected to the forces of good. While the fighter has only his morals and past to rub "the soot of goodness" onto him.
