| Majin_Tenshi12-08-04, 04:12 AM | Even the best laid plans have their flaws. This is to be expected, but it is quite embarrassing when the character doing the planning has an intelligence of over 25. The short of it is that someone has threatened my character, and I can't let that slide. However, they're probably 5 levels higher then me, and even with the advantage of gestalt, I'm no match for them in a fair fight. What’s a character to do to preserve there sense of pride (twisted though it may be)? Assassination! The long of it. My character is a 12th level Grey Elf. Gestalted Illusionist/Rogue, with a couple specialist things from Unearthed Arcana. He less then 75hp but its almost impossible to find him to hit him. Anyways, my character indulged in an arena match, in the mage category. The sponsors gave out "rings of 1 lives" so death wasn't a serious risk despite the low HP. The sponsors also strongly emphasized that combat was to be flashy to wow the audience. I gave my DM a reminder that it wouldn't be fair to design my opponent specifically do get around deception, he took this a tad far and built a Warmage. Anyways, the battle was a riot. I used Hallucinatory Terrain to give myself cover to hide behind and also convinced the guy that he was caught in the Maze spell. I then threw in a Major Image of a huge Blue Dragon, which only confused the guy (dragons left 3000 years ago) until I shot a lightning bolt through its mouth to fake a breath attack. I let him play with it for a little while, then had it appear to polymorph into a white dragon and used cone of cold from its mouth. 1 meteor swarm later and I'd lost the match. I cleared out, but the illusions lasted a little longer and he kept chucking spells. He was furious. I gave him a few days and then tried to speak to him. He made it clear that if he ever saw me again it would cost me my head. Now, I found out my party would be leaving in about a week anyways, so its manageable, and this guy is a military officer, so he stays on the base or whatever most of the time. But I can't let threats slide. Anyways, my plan thus far: I intend to sneak around the base invisible for a day, and use detect scrying and detect magic to find anything that might see me sneaking (+30 hide check should give me opportunity to recast safely). After that, I intend to shadow the guy as he finishes his day and find out where he sleeps. Once I find that out, I'll sneak in while he is asleep, and coup de grace with disintegrate. I'll leave a battleaxe as my opinion of his view of magic, and Shadow Walk to the place I was going next anyways. Now, I know there’s got to be at least 5 holes in this plan that my character should pick up that I can't find. (hard playing a character that’s smarter then you huh?) So, I figure if I bug people around here they'll be able to fill in the holes in my plan. If not then maybe you at least get a laugh over the way the arena fight went. |
