| turtlemonkey09-25-06, 01:43 PM | My question concerns using awaken on a brown bear, and more specificly its bab. when you use the spell the animals type changes to magical beast, the biggest difference is animials 3/4 bab, and magical beast bab... now once awaken is over do u have a 8 HD bear with 6 bab (6 HD of animal that netted 4 bab, and 2 HD from awaken spell that is magical beast and nets u +2 bab) or do u have a 8 HD awakened bear with 8 bab? i have a feeling is the first one, but just checking to make sure |
| KnaveofClubs09-25-06, 05:32 PM | the 6 bab bonus is right. When you awaken an animal its almost like upping their monster level, they get their attack bonus, feats, and skills appropriate for an animal of their hit dice. |
| trapspringer09-25-06, 07:17 PM | I think all of it's HD become magical beast HD. That's just my gut reaction, though. |
| Ogmug09-25-06, 07:36 PM | The brown bear becomes: magical beast (augmented animal, brown) HD increase to 8d10+24 Its Int increases by 3d6 its cha increases by 1d3 Its BAB =HD (8) Magical Beast Type Magical beasts are similar to animals but can have Intelligence scores higher than 2. Magical beasts usually have supernatural or extraordinary abilities, but sometimes are merely bizarre in appearance or habits. Features A magical beast has the following features. * 10-sided Hit Dice. * Base attack bonus equal to total Hit Dice (as fighter). * Good Fortitude and Reflex saves. * Skill points equal to (2 + Int modifier, minimum 1) per Hit Die, with quadruple skill points for the first Hit Die. Traits A magical beast possesses the following traits (unless otherwise noted in a creature’s entry). * Darkvision out to 60 feet and low-light vision. * Proficient with its natural weapons only. * Proficient with no armor. * Magical beasts eat, sleep, and breathe. and retains some of its animal traits (those not changed by the magical beast type). |

| Ogmug09-25-06, 10:11 PM | Wait, so an augmented creature gains the benefits of their augmentation instead of their old type? Wow, I need to redo that Awakened panther/rogue...my party better watch out :plotting: Augmented Subtype A creature receives this subtype whenever something happens to change its original type. Some creatures (those with an inherited template) are born with this subtype; others acquire it when they take on an acquired template. The augmented subtype is always paired with the creature’s original type. A creature with the augmented subtype usually has the traits of its current type, but the features of its original type. |
| runestar09-25-06, 10:26 PM | Only its type changes to magical beast, it still advances using animal HD.:) Your first answer was correct.:) |
| Ogmug09-25-06, 11:06 PM | it only advances as an animial till you give it classes. Once an animal is awakened, it gains an intelligence score and can effectively "learn" things. The above mentioned panther would really be a panther/rogue(1?) , a cr 5 monster (2hd from magical beast). Rogue is not necessarily the main class for a magical beast (fighter appears to be), so it takes 2 levels of rogue to increase the cr of the panther. It would still have 6 hd however. I see what you are referring to however, IE: the HD stay at d8 instead of d10 (feature of animal vs feature of beast) |

And what if it's a monk? Sorry, couldn't resist. |
