Back in the Dungeon Again [Archive] - Wizards Community

Many months ago I started a thread asking if I should ever play D&D again. The responses were helpful, some saying I should, some saying I should not. Perchance I have a spot of dragon blood flowing through my veins. I remain inexorably drawn to the game.

I'm playing again. I'm in a different group, one I found through this forum in the classifieds. What a difference a group can make.

The DM is knowledgeable, having played for over 20 years. It's a homebrew campaign, and he seems to know his craft. Yet it's more than that. He has an online Yahoo! group for campaign discussions among us. He keeps us informed of the date and time of the next game. Games start pretty much on time and end pretty much on time. During the game, he keeps things moving. While there's always time for a question, encounters are often fast and furious.

The other players are intent on playing, without being fanatical. They know their characters and the characters work together. Mostly they too have been playing RPGs for years. In a combat encounter, they know what they're going to do when it is their turn. Sure, there are times when the books are opened and a discussion ensues, but mostly things move.

I've been to just a few games with them. In those few games I learned basics about the game that I never learned all last year in the other group. I'll just say that in the last game we played I needed to play a character for an absent player, in addition to my regular character. It went pretty well, I think. Truthfully, in the other group I wouldn't have been able to do it.

I'm helping a friend in highschool start a DnD club and me and two of the six other members know the game well enough. Still, are new boys are learning quick and one player plans on DMing soon.
