| DyloniusFunk03-04-05, 10:13 AM | As the title said this may seem kinda ranty. But i just feel the need to let some things off my chest. OK so last night we had our bi-weekly Thursday Night game i attend up at a gaminng store in Standish,Maine. My character is a level 6 Psychic Warrior who only joined the group about 3 sessions ago. This was actually the last session of the campagin though i didn't know that at the time. I can't really go into much detaila bout the groups exploits before ia rrvied since i'm not sure of most of it msyelf, but i do know that they were being attacked by assassins on a regualr basis, and every building they we're in had caught on fire( though it was never the groups fault). And because of thier deeds they had become somehwat local heroes in the city. So i wandered in right as the thrid fire was blazing and got help and thats how i joined in. Last session there was some fighting in back alleyways that we eventually had to retreat from. And finally last night we got to the climax. We awoke in the inn to see a 15 foot creature herding the citizens down the mains treet towards the church of Pelor. he was escorted by town milita we recognized from previous encounters. Last session a large piller of fire had erupted from the dome of the church and was still there blazing up into the sky(Think the green signal that erupted from Minas Morgul in ROTK). ] So to make a long story short, we eventually found our way to the chruch following town guards, one of whom was a recurring npc from earlier in the campaign. The party paladin deteched no evil from them, but massive evil coming from the demonic creature they were with earlier that day. By this point all the citizens have either been rounded up and herded towards the temple, are being herded, or had been killed. So we arrive at the church. The dm lets us apply any buffs we wish, so i do all my psychic wariror powers. So when the fight starts i got +2 damage, DR 3/-, +2 ac, and acid damage 2d6(Which due to misunderstanding on my part actually got applied after the first fight, so it was never even used). Two of the other characters scout around the sides for other entrances to the church, while myself and 3 others take the front route. When I go in I see milita and clerics milling around the pillar of flame, from which is lsowly appearing a demonic creature, and hovering around is everyones favorite friend, the Mind Flayer. Well at this point i got no where to go but forward, so i take my first attack.Beautiful roll, i take the guy down, but miss on my Cleave attempt. And that was all i was able to do becaue due to two failed will saves, myself and the guys behind me we're stunned for a total of 13 rounds. We first got stunned for 5 rounds and then he blasted again and we get hit and are out for another 9 rounds before the mind flayer disappeared. At this point he was being grappled by the party barbarian and choose to vanish. All i could do at that point was make Fort saves to reduce the amount of damage that the clerics were doing with touch spells(which of course my +2 ac did nothing to help with since it was an an enhancement bonus and did nothing for touch spells. My friend said it was errated to Natural armor bonus, but that wouldn't have helped either) and take damage from guys mistaking my head for a TEE-Ball. The barbarian was able to take some of the heat off me, but by that point there wasn't anything i could do for a while so i decided to help the owner of the store a bit by collecting x-box games and filling the fridge. I used to wokr in the Groccery deopartment anjd sometimes stocking helps calm my nerves, ebcause at that point i was quite irritated. Plus the guy is a nice DM and shopkeep so i like toi help him out where i can.I suppose I should have stayed and watched but i figured there wasn't much i could do for a while, and thought that if iw ent to the john and walked around for a bit i might come up with a plan when i could take an action again. of course i never got that chance because the fight ended before i got back. So when i got back to the table, i found the encounter over. I was surprised because i figured we were' still gonna have to take on the demon but he was sucked back into whereever he came from since the ritual was inerrupted. And then i learned that was the climax of the campaign and the dm was gona retire the characters. I was diappointed because i didn't want to end in such an anti-cilimactic manner. The dm said he had allways planned for the Thursday slot to be a for New Player D&D Night, and he eventually wants to make the Thursday game an RPGA Sanctioned Event. Which may be hard to do in a store with lots of interruptions, but he's hopeful it can be done. The funny tihng was that i had this exact problem earlier in the week. On Monday i had a Star Wars D20 game. It took 3 times for me to finally roll high enough to wake up from sleep. I didn't really do much since it was my first session and i bwas trying to get the feel for the situation. I tried following some footprints but didn't have Track and only rolled about 4 a dn with Surivial that made it about an 8 or 9. Finally we get into a fight. I make one attack and miss. Then i'm told to make a Will save. I miss, and i am toldf that i run off in fear from the enemy. I spent the rest of the night watching the action since the dm said i couldn't try to calm myself and rejoin the fight. Well i guess thats all i have to say. I have Star Wars Minitures tonight and our Saturday Ebberon game tomorrow so i hope my dice will be better behaved then. |
| Board_Rider03-04-05, 10:43 AM | Yeah that kinda bites..but one word for you buddy: structure. You should edit that big blurb and break it down a little so that other readers can read about you pain. |
| ShadowDragon868503-04-05, 11:06 AM | Yeah. That was painful all right. Painful to read. Break it up into a coherant example of frustration and I'll be able to summon more sympathy. I feel for you, but really, that abortion of good typing makes it hard. |
| On_the_wings_of_TPK03-04-05, 02:15 PM | Score! I'm not the only one who has certain issues with this grammer and spelling crap that everyone says i should use!!!!!. As to the OP. Yaa bad rolls suck and it happens, but whatcha gonna do right. |
| DyloniusFunk03-04-05, 02:40 PM | Score! I'm not the only one who has certain issues with this grammer and spelling crap that everyone says i should use!!!!!. I don't want to sound aggresive or anything, but did you notice the fact that I did edit my OP to make it more legible and less rambling? I edited at 12:43 and you posted at 2:15, so i assume you did. Yes I admit the first post was a load of rambling garbage, but I was trying to post while doing other things at the same time and didn't give editing as muich thought as i should have. When i realized that my point was gonna be missed because no one could understand what i was saying, i went and fixed the layout of the text and spelling errors. Obviously it's not a A+ english paper quality piece of work, but i didn't expect it would have to be for a message board. Anyway, don't want to sound hostile, I just don't like cracks made about my bad typing even after I take the effort to fix the errors. As to the OP. Yaa bad rolls suck and it happens, but whatcha gonna do right. Buy new dice? :) If they perform badly tonight in SW Minis and tomorrow in the Ebberon game i may be making a few replacements. |
| Arrowhen03-04-05, 02:51 PM | I don't want to sound aggresive or anything, but did you notice the fact that I did edit my OP to make it more legible and less rambling? Heh, actually, I think he was saying "I, too, have problems with grammar and spelling," not, "Ha ha, you can't spell." |
| psionichamster03-04-05, 03:01 PM | wanna know the real trick. get a hammer...preferably a large one (like a 3lb sledge...) put all the offending dice in full view and command the bad-rollers to be exorcised. remember, they can smell fear, so don't let on if you are even the littlest bit intimidated by the dice demons. roll each dice 3 times. if the avg is not average for the die type or better, smash it. do this for each one, working up from 4's ... repeat till you get to the 20's. this should be done in front of the new dice, to show them the fate which lies in store for them, should they decide to fail you, as well alternatively, you can use acid, fire, microwave ovens, or you favorite firearm to achieve the same effect. this should alleviate your random-demons problems... namaste, the hamster ps, this is a joke |

But yea, I feel the same way. Brevity and structure are important. |
| DyloniusFunk03-04-05, 03:55 PM | Heh, actually, I think he was saying "I, too, have problems with grammar and spelling," not, "Ha ha, you can't spell." You know what, your probably right. I just re-read over the whole thread and that's probably what he m,eant. I'm quite tired today and probably shouldn't be posting, lest i make bad errors like this. My apologizes TPK, if i misunderstand what you meant |
| Arrowhen03-04-05, 04:07 PM | Heh. It happens. If I only posted when I wasn't tired, I'd probably never post at all. |
| Salla03-04-05, 04:21 PM | Yeah, that sucked ... Mind Flayer psyblasts are nasty. Guessing that, since a 6th level Psychic Warrior was admitted, that the average party level is in that general ballpark. A mind flayer is CR 8, so it should have been a nasty fight, and the possibility of a TPK is there. I'm surprised everybody blew the DC 17 save, but sometimes, it happens. I'm probably going to rule (I don't know if it's a house rule or not) that stuns overlap rather than accumulate ... though 5 rounds of stunning is usually more than long enough for a mind flayer to make a Gray Matter Souffle'. |

Ok a few clarifications. Most of us were around 5-6 level, except for one guy who was 8th level. I don't know why he was 8th but i'm playing with him today and i'll ask him. He went to the elft side of the church to scout along with an NPC. Another guy went arouind to the right side, and i led the charge up the middle. Probably the reason why the Mind Flayer didn't do worse than he did is because the barbarian/Druid was bear hugging him in ana ttempt to grapple. He sucedded in hanging on and the MF just gave up and vanished. The problem was that i was in front of the doorway and three other guys we're behind me, who we're all in range of the 60 ft cone of the Mind Blast. If i was given a chance i would probably have moved back out of the way as far as i could and tried to lure the milita and clerics outside while the Barb took care of the MF. But i never got that chance since right after the first stun ended, i was told to make Will save for a second time, which i failed again, as did all the others behind me. I gues sis hould be happy that it wasn't a TPK, but i feel like i should have at leastr gotten one round to make some kind of defense before the next Mind Blast came. I mean the guy was allready dsitratced by the barbarian and so i think one round between blasts would not have been unfair. But it's done and done, and now all that's left to do is decided if i want to retire my current group of D20'S and get brand new ones. They certianly didn't redeem thenselves last night in the SW Mini's game i was playing in. |
| psionichamster03-05-05, 01:58 PM | get the hammer namaste, the hamster |
| ShadowDragon868503-05-05, 02:13 PM | Get the hammer. Give the old D20s a chance to redeem themselves. In front of the new D20s, roll each of the old D20s 20 times. If you get an average of more than the stastical average of the die (if: average is 13 or up,) then they may live. If they do not roll a single natural twenty, they die. If they roll more ones than twenties, they die. Repeat this process with all of your old die. That should properly intimidate the new D20s. It worked for ole' Uncle Joe Stalin |
| Neely03-05-05, 04:36 PM | Getting low roles on the final showdown is painfull indeed. It can get me quiet irritated as well. Same goes for having lots of natural 20's, which makes your party mates' actions look pale. It can make me feel uncomfortable too. |

| Phrennzy03-05-05, 04:55 PM | Mindblast Stunning duration stacks? That's sounding kinda BS. It should have been a total of 9 rounds, since that was the highest. In any case - bad die rolling does suck, especially when it completely takes you out of the fight. But on the upswing, you did manage to take someone out - so it wasn't a complete bad deal for you. But you might want to at least threaten your dice with the hammer. Or maybe make an example out of one of them. |
| Salla03-05-05, 05:22 PM | Mindblast Stunning duration stacks? That's sounding kinda BS. It should have been a total of 9 rounds, since that was the highest. I know what you mean ... I've been poring over my books looking for any clue on whether or not that stacks, but I can't find a reference anywhere. I'd almost be tempted to say 'first number applies', since you can't get 'more stunned' (kind of like trying to blind a blind man ... he already can't see, what're you gonna do to him?). |
| Wizard03-06-05, 03:30 AM | Personally, I'd have them overlap. There are some fun story implications made possible by having them stack, though---instead of petrification, maybe someone had a run-in with 1,000 illithids...:) |
| DyloniusFunk03-06-05, 02:47 PM | Mindblast Stunning duration stacks? That's sounding kinda BS. It should have been a total of 9 rounds, since that was the highest. Let me clarify. WHat happened is that i got will save, failed 5 rounds sutnned, then a second will save, failed again, for ANOTHER 9 rounds. So 13 rounds of total stunning. Also i'm not 100% sure that ther barbarian/druid had grappeled the Mind Flayewr when he made the second blast. But it hink he was close enough for the Mind FLayer to see hima sa threat and so that should have given me at least 1 round to make a retreat out of the range o the Midn blast. But i don't think that happened. What i remeber is sitting around for 5 rounds, then being told to make asecond wills ave, without being given a chance to move. I wish i could give more infoa bout our party and ouir tactics but it was only my thrid session and i stillw as trying to sort out everyones characters and thier abilites. |
| Aricandor03-07-05, 04:43 AM | Hmm... The hammer might just work. You know, new dice are at most a buck a piece.. Make the dice understand that they are expendable. :D |
| Draco Strang03-07-05, 04:59 AM | Hmm... The hammer might just work. You know, new dice are at most a buck a piece.. Make the dice understand that they are expendable. :D I pay 45 cents for anything that's not a d20. d20s cost me a buck though. |
| nyysjan03-07-05, 05:52 AM | your character lasted three sessions and you complain i lose characters one per session minimum these days and not just because of dice or my playing style and plus your grammar sucks but so does mine |
| Lina_Inverse03-07-05, 07:18 AM | just do a good ol fashioned dice cleanseing.or perhaps your dice realize your scared of rolling poorly and thus fail you. get a pair of balls, who cares if you rolled poorly.save or dies are a part of D&D. ok assumeing you got stunned one round after the initial 5,youd still only be stunned 10 rounds after a new mind blast.not that it matters,a fight should be over by round 4 anyways :P |
| \/1[]D3|203-07-05, 07:54 PM | I have three d20's, and last night, I used all of them, and for the first 10 times I had to roll, I got 3 or less. My DM had us make spot checks, and I noticed we were walking on the ground.:nonono: |
