Balors and maraliths! [Archive] - Wizards Community

01-11-06, 06:25 PM These have to be the coolest looking monsters in the manual. So who has fought one before? What are they like? What were the cirumstances?

I always wanted to test my mettle, but I don't think my caracter will ever be strong enough! Tell me what your exp. was like. Like, how did your DM create the personality, what kind of attacks did they use, etc?

(PS: If this is the nerdiest topic ever, I don't care. Spare me the comments.)

01-11-06, 10:51 PM My advice for fighting a balor: Run. If, by some freak chance, you manage to kill it, make the killing blow from really far away, or you will die.

Unfortunately, the only marilith a character of ever fought was improperly summoned, so it couldn't move for a short while. It lasted only a few rounds.

01-11-06, 11:14 PM Just for jollies one time we had a fight with a balor. 2 players were going to be late, and the others wanted to do something unusual. So they decided to whack a Balor. I dont remember the blow by blow, but it was over much quicker than they had thought it would be. TPK in like 3 rounds. And this was 4 PCs out of a party of 6. Not very pretty at all.

Don't run, I had a reaping mauler pining him when he explode(yes I know I was taking fire damage for touching him, but we just made level 20 characters for a one shoot thing). Anyways, I was pining him when he exploded and I servived. He did manage to kill 2 out of 4 PC's do. . . So yeah there tough.

My best advice is to put a dimentinal anchor on him, then he can't teleport around. And a death wared is always good from protetcing from things like implosion. . .

01-12-06, 02:03 AM My 16th-level bladesinger (in a 5-member party) once fought a balor wearing full plate and a marilith together. Can't win. My lucky disarm roll brings a check of 68, disarming the balor of its artifact sword, the party rogue tumbles and grab the disarmed sword, and then we teleported away. :)

Use range attacks or spring attacks on the marilith. Don't stay in its threatened squares.
