my companion and i are relatively new to the game. i'm a half-orc barbarian and my companion is a human cleric of obad-hai with, i think, earth and fire domains. our characters work closely together. we have most of our stuff worked out as far as stats and skills go, but we don't know which items to get since neither of us has actually started at level 7 before, so the choices are harder. we each have 17k gold to spend and can choose from PHB and DMG. the stuff in the PHB is easy to choose from, we just primarily need advice on what magic items and other cool stuff to get. any suggestions for a few good things to pick up?

For the barbarian, you'll obviously want a magic weapon of some sort, though you probably won't be able to afford much more than a +1 (if you can swing a +1 with an elemental boost for 8kgp - it is probably worth it for him). After that, some lightly (+1 or +2) enchanted armor, and maybe a stat booster (Str, Dex or Con most likely). If he is a melee character, you can probably get away without a magical ranged weapon; however if he's more of a ranged character - he should probably have a +1 melee weapon just in case. If you have the money left over - Ring of Protection, Amulet of Natural Armor, Cloak of Resistance would all be decent choices.

For the cleric - again armor and shield (if he uses one) are good places to start. Magic weapon would not be a bad choice, but the cleric can also invest in either a) wands or b) wondrous items - pearls of power, stat booster (Wis or Con or Str probably).

Sorry to not provide anything too specific - but that's the priority I would start with.
