While playing a bard tonight. I was asked what exactly I was singing to inspire my comrades to greatness. I :banghead: was at a loss and could not come up with any actual music. Anyone have any suggestions to music that would be appropriate to inspire, fascinate, etc?

I came up with the Cavalry charge on a bugle, but it was after a bit of thinking. That would work best in a rescue or mounted charge I think. There must be more easily recognizable stuff out there.

mozarts "under the mountain king" is easily recognizable and very courage inspiring i think.

*Sings* Bluff, bluff, bluff, bluff the stupid ogre! I recommend using Elan's formula from The Order of the Stick (http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/GiantITP/ootscript?SK=1) to effectively describe bardic songs.

Think about video games and movies. And think about real music.

Dramatic, upbeat, exciting music makes you move and react faster, which would aid you in battle. Slower classical music would help you concentrate when doing something that requires skill. Hypnotic, snake-charmer style music would fascinate creatures.

How about some Queen?

"I see a little silhouetto of an orc,
Scaramouche! Scaramouche!
Can you cast Control Weather?
Thunderbolts and lightning,
Very very frightening me!"

or how about Tenacious D's Tribute?

"Needless to say, the dragon was stunned.
Whip, crack! Went his whippy tail,
And the beast was done.
He asked us: "Be you Solars?"
And we said "Neigh!
We are but gnomes!
WaaaaAAAAAaaaaAAaaaa.
AAAAaaa, aaaaAAA,
AAAaAa!"

The only Queen I serve.

Song Of Freedom: Don't Stop Me Now
Inspire Greatness: We Are The Champions
Inspire Courage: We Will Rock You
Inspire Competence: I Want It All

Humorously, the bard I played who used those songs sang Fat Bottom Girls to a group of female Tieflings once.

They became quite fond of my character.

I rarely say this TheUnknownZombie … LMFAO!! Well done!

The last Bard I played was actually a little tone deaf. Rather than Singing or Playing his “music,” he relied on Poetry, Oratory, and Comedy (depending on the situation). It made roleplaying fun since I’m pretty skilled at oral communication (yay lawyers!). So it was no big deal for me to extemporize actual speeches. For inspiring my comrades in battle, I leaned heavily on the true Bard … I do a very passable job of paraphrasing Henry V. I’ve also been known to recite excerpts from Beowulf.

For more “intimate” encounters, sonnets are the way to go. The easiest is when I had to rally a town to action. Heck, that’s no different than making final argument to a jury. Finally, when it came to “entertaining” a mob of rowdy tavern patrons, comedy is the way to go … storytelling in particular. Comedic anecdotes will put the audience in your pocket.

My DM and I actually battled over my Bard. His vision of Bards was limited to lute-toting minstrels. Despite the language in the PHB that expressly allows Bardic Music to function via media other than music, he (at first) limited all of a Bard’s spells and abilities to singing or playing an instrument. Obviously, I negotiated around this obstacle (yay lawyers!).

We agreed that I had to roleplay all of my “music” … I had to spout off actual verbiage to use my spells, abilities, etc. That meant writing actual Verbal Components for each of my spells that required a Verbal Component. Since I could hardly recite “Jabberwocky” in a six-second Round of combat, I went with limericks. I scribed a different limerick for each spell. Whenever I cast a spell, I had to roleplay my Bard reciting the appropriate limerick.

Oh yeah, just to screw with my DM a little, my first drafts of Verbal Components were all haikus …

Darkness enfolds me
Danger lurks around us all
Let Light chase our fears

I know a guy who once played a bard that never sang, but instead was one hell of an orator. A stern ,judgemental type kind of guy, he gave inspiring speeches, akin to Winston Churchill.

"And we shall fight them on the beaches, and in the fields, and in the streets..."

Inspiring stuff, eh?

The Life, The Life
The Adventurer's Life - T'is a dangerous one they say
But for better or worse and a rich man's purse
It's a price I'll gladly pay
Yes, it's a price I'll gladly pay

The Life, The Life
The Adventurer's Life - It's the only one for me
But for women and wine and merry good time
It's the best that life can be
Yes, it's the best that life can be

The Life, The Life
The Adventurer's Life - It's the life that calls my name
But with sword and spell (and little of else)
We shall save the world again
Yes, we shall save the world again

Now should you live
The Adventurer's Life - well I raise my glass to you
Look Death in the eye (and kiss your arse goodbye!!)
'Cause that's what we were born to do
Yes, that's what we were born to do!

Jpop. Lots and lots of Jpop. If I make a bard ever, it's going to be a female tiefling who sings nothing but Morning Musume songs. :plotting:

songs that have come up in my group are the Indiana Jones theme and the music from the simpons when Homer and Barney are training to be Astronaughts and are having a gladitorial style fight.

I would personally think that instumental songs would work the best.

Shim Megami Tensei : Nocturne has really good tunes for all situations,

The entire Final Fantasy series has great battle music, so I use that from time to time....

And most of all, Midnight Syndicate, the D&D soundtrack, has great songs. Well of course it does. Its the D&D soundtrack.

but I return to my previous statements..... RPG music is the way to go.

and for lyrics.... Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie, and Ramstien will get anyone into the rear-kicking mood. If I was a guy in full plate with a big sword, and the bard was pouding out Du Haust, I would be pretty pumped.

For individual spells.... all I can think of is Expeditious Retreat: "And I ruunn... I run so far awwaaayy..."

I've played a couple of bards and always made up songs to sing at the appropriate times. It was fun for me, but not always for the group -- my singing voice is terrible. I found that I had to make them up ahead of time though because I couldn't think that quickly on my feet.

One technique I'd use is to take a song or two that I already knew and mix them together and add new words. It worked quite well and was entertaining, challenging and fun. Also, being a fan of obscure music -- old blues, cajunto and zydeco -- most of my group never knew where the tunes were coming from.

Playing a bard is the time for your inner ham to emerge and shine. It can make the game much more fun than stating that you entertain the house, here's my perform roll or I sing a song to inspire courage. But, you have to enjoy that kind of stuff otherwise it is just a chore.

I give you a song my gnome bard sang for her best friend, a troll (sung to a very discordant tune):

I spent the day committing slaughter!
I spent the day committing slaughter!
Down by the swamp!
Down by the swamp!

Waylaying innocent travellers!
Waylaying innocent travellers!
Off with their heads!
Off with their heads!

Passerby's tried to fleeeee!
They did scream and cryyyyy!

I spent the day committing slaughter!
I spent the day committing slaughter!
Down by the swamp!
Down by the swamp!

Ahhhh, now that was a night to remember.

Unless you get into magical instruments a full orchaestra is rarely available to a bard and I could never see a lyre or mandolin being very inspiring. I would suggest military music like marches on percussion instuments accompaied with war chants. That's why they exist in the first place, to do exactly what bard inspiration suggests. You could also have the party chant with the bard for it to effect them.

Considering that the bard ability is not level based, I would hire several bardic drummers to follow the party and let the high level bard do some spell casting. That makes more sense, both tactically and historically.

The most annoying bard I ever played was a mime. . . You have no idea how hard it is to describe a character as forming the shape of courage.

As for a song for courage, the old classic from Short Circut II would fit (also in Shrek 2), I need a hero.

You wouldn't happen to mean "In the Hall of the Mountain King", from Peer Gynt, by Grieg, would you?

If we're being nitpicky, it's "Dance of the Imps in the Hall of the Mountain King". Actually. :P

I reccomend eye of the tiger and kung foo fighting if you have a monk.
I've played a couple of bards, one in a "play the most stereotypical, generic character you can" game, which was very funny, my half elf bard had a lyre and asked "are any of you lady kobolds" or similar when we came across monsters so he'd know if flirting was required.
The other bard i had was great, he was a fey, and instead of actively performing, his perform ranks wre in "life is a stage", which involved being generally melodramatic and oferacting in everything he did, which was enough to fascinate or inspire people.

Song Of Freedom: Don't Stop Me Now

Alternately, I Want To Break Free. :ayyyy!:

Once a bard of mine was being devoured by a horrible plant monster (the Root of Evil from the Environmental Impact premade adventure) and, making the required concentration check, sang a final inspiration to his comrades.

:weep: "Save me! Save me! Saaaaave meeeeee! I can't face this plaaaaant aloooooooone! Save me! Save me! Ohhhhhhhhhohhhhh! I'm n--"

quod per sortem
sternit fortem,

Songs by Manowar (http://www.manowar.com/) can be quite fitting.

Hail and Kill
Holy War
Demon's Whip (for the Evil bards to sing)
among others.

Just read through the lyrics and enjoy.

Pretty much anything. You just need to find a magical orcheastrea, and in no time you'll be busting out "One Winged Angel" or "Force Your Way" (both Nobou Umeatsu feats,) for boss battles. :)

Of course, J-pop works, as does... Well, think of any good fight music you ever heard or saw in a movie or game. Then fire up your music-stealing program of choice.

Special D's Come with Me is so sickeningly sweet that it'll inspire your allies to fight harder to get AWAY from you. :)

And of course, for any good one on one boss battle, Neodammerung is great stuff, yo. Best if used for the epic confrontation between a pair of monks wearing boots of flying in the rain. :)
("When the raindrops start coming down, what goes up? Neo and Smith.")

Eye of the Tiger would be some good stuff too. Let's see, what else...

If you're confronting a wizard in his lair, how about "A Mad Russian's Christmas" by the Trans-Siberian Orcheastrea.

By System of a Down, here's four good songs:
Toxicity
Chop Suey
Marmalade
Shame on a *****

And of course, how could we have forgotten Duel of the Fates, which is perfect for the epic sort of confrontation that only occurs with true BBEGs.

For more random battles, Slipknot's Wait and Bleed is good. But to put out that kind of music in game, you're gonna need to be a Bard of the Dark Arts.

Yep. Rock and Roll. :)

Rammstein was already mentioned.

How about the Offspring, with Come out Swingin'? It's some good stuff, yo.

Nightwish - Sleeping Sun.
It may not seem like Fight music, but give it a chance. It's pretty inspirational for the kind of fight that drags on and on and on with multiple enemy reinforcements.

Nickelback - Hero. Duh. Also, Never Again is good.

I've built a decent collection of medieval, scottish, irish, british and american music to use with bards over time, sometimes as-is, sometimes slightly edited. A lot of those songs are very appropriate for battle, especially US civil war war songs, I've found.

And the more ribald tunes just have "gnome" written all over them.

I prefer performance (oratory) myself. Pull out the myths like Iliad, Odyssey, Aeneid, Beowulf, or Gilgamesh and pick a previously highlighted passage to recite for the group. Screw music! The epics rule!
Spear-famed Diomedes hacking through the Trojan lines and heckling Alexandros for using a womanly bow, Beowulf ripping Grendle limb from limb with his bare hands, Aeneas killing Turnus at the very end of Aeneid, man that's great stuff! No music beats it.
