Bard idea I have. What do you think? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I had a really neat idea for a character for the new campaign we are starting up. His official class will be bard, but he is in no way a performer.

Sisko Spellmason is a middle-aged cook, who owns his own restaurant in Waterdeep. He is originally from Cormyr, where he was a captain in their military. He rose quickly in the ranks, not because of his fighting ability, which is average, but because of his ability to command and inspire the soldiers. He started his military career when he was sixteen, and became a captain by his 21st birthday. His career lasted until he was 30. It ended under very poor circumstances. During his time serving Cormyr, he fell in love with a fellow officer, a war wizard named Veronica. They had been seeing each other for a few years when they decided to marry. Everything was good, until the day that Sisko's patrol encountered a large force of orcs. She ended up dying under his command, and that hurt him moe then would be believed. He retired 4 months later. He adventured with a group of his old military buddies for another seven years before retiring to Waterdeep and starting a business.

Sisko's bard levels are the culmination of several events in his life. He was born to a family of spellcasters. His mother was a wizard, a specialist in abjuration and an Incantatrix. His father was a Priest of Deneir. He also has two sisters; they are twin druids of Eldath. In order to get Sisko familiar and comfortable with magic, his mother would sit in front of his crib and cast spells in front of him. This was done for the first three years of his life. As a result, Sisko, as he advances in level, will "remember" some of those spells.

His combat skills come from his military background.

His "bardic music" isn't really bardic music at all. First, he doesn't sing or play an instrument. His father, who was the paster of a Deneirian temple, taught Sisko an oratory technique called "Reaching." It involves reaching out with your mind as you speak and snaring the attention, and the minds, of those listening (his father had a level or two in bard, as well).

Sisko's creative spark comes out in his cooking. His restaurant is somewhat similar to Benehonda's. The chefs cook in front of the customers, performing elaberate tricks. I plan on have him take Performance (cooking).

The campaign is gonna start out between 6th and 8th level (the DM still has to decide). I'm trying to come up with the feats and skills he should take. I know I'm gonna take Leadership (his cohorts and followers are former members of his platoon who now work with him in his restaurant) In addition, I'm can't figure out a good prestige class for him. If you have any suggestions of idea's on prestige class, feats, or skills, please let me know. Thanks!! :)

She ended up dying under his command, and that hurt him more then would be believed. He retired 4 months later, and moved on. Did he retire because of her death? If so, I wouldn't use the phrase 'moved on' as it makes it seem like he said "Ah well, ****it, let's party" after four months and bailed ;)

Heh, I like that prestige class.

I've edited the part about him moving on. It didn't sound right after i read it again.

I like your character idea. Very thought-out, and the idea of using words, not music for inspiring courage, etc. is nicely different.

Sounds great. You might want to give him a level in fighter, to reflect the armor and weapon proficiencies a soldier would have.

You might also need to consider how his bardic knowledge would work.
