| wonlee7602-27-06, 09:37 PM | Not sure what your question is. The base creature is a creature that has the template. Certain templates can only be applied to certain creatures. Basically, the base creature can be anything. As an aside, 1/2 giant and 1/2 ogre are not templates. They're both a race. |
| Tyler Do'Urden02-27-06, 11:38 PM | It would be like the base creature, plus all of the bonuses/penalties/traits granted by the templates. Balance wise, it'd be a mistake. Mechanically, it'd be a like a magic scroll; a very powerful piece of paper. As a PC, the level adjustment would ensure a creature with more than two halves would have about a tenth the hit points of any base race creature of the same ECL. There's no reason you can't follow the instructions in more than one template and apply them to the same creature, but it's not as good an idea as it sounds. |
| Mitchell02-28-06, 12:53 AM | *IF* you want to do something like this, figure out the base creature and apply a template to it. A 1/2 dragon, 1/2 celestial would be a dragon of some type with the 1/2 celestial template applied, or a celestial of some type with the 1/2 dragon template applied. Same with 1/2 ogre, 1/2 giant, or whatever else someone can think of. |
| irzg9zh3psgq3m0902-28-06, 04:25 AM | wonlee76 I'm was trying to ask what would be the child of two non-humanoid races, such as a dragon and a celestial creature. The template rules say just add the bonuses to the base creature, which is usually a humanoid (human/elf/half-orc). But in this case, there is no base creature. Or is there? Mitchell I was thinking of that too. I guess one of the two have to be the base creature, but which one? Either one? Tyler Do'Urden Yeah, it's definitely some sort of mistake. The rules say you can add as many templates as you want, but how is that possible? Especially with the inherited templates. There are only two parents to make a child... Anyway, thanks for your replies. |

Dragon + Celestial = celestial as base creature with half-dragon template, or dragon as base creature with half-celestial template. And one hell of a level adjustment. |
| The White Sorcerer02-28-06, 05:20 AM | I mostly use the mother as the base creature, if both parents could result in a half-creature template. |
| runestar02-28-06, 07:38 AM | I would prefer the half-celestial dragon. Sounds more badass... :D |

There are no specific "rules" for what the base creature is in such a situation as far as I know. As a DM, I would just take the mother's race and apply the appropriate template. Dragon Mother + Celestial Father = 1/2 Celestial Dragon. Celestial Mother + Dragon Father = 1/2 Dragon Celestial |
| Betrayer_of_light02-28-06, 11:02 AM | Just out of interest, how effective are half creatures? I mean, I'm contemplating playing a half-orc, half-dragon barbarian. He'd have massive strenght and all, but a level adjustment of three. What would be the optimum level campaign to play him in? |
| tharivol26602-28-06, 12:28 PM | higher LA is more efficient at higher levels. low levels just can't supprot them. the 1/2 orc 1/2 dragon in a fifth level campaing would have like what 3d12 hd? but neways to the OP whenever a 1/2 + 1/2 comes up i just use a human w/o the bonus feat or skills. ie a completly blank canvas. in the sabage speicies theres a list for the template pyramid or something like that which shows how to give them out thus potentially limiting the choices. |
| Mitchell02-28-06, 09:08 PM | As far as the other templates go, it depends. There is nothing, I suppose, preventing you from having a 1/2 ogre, 1/2 giant werewolf vampire. That would be three templates added to a single base. This assumes that giants and ogres can contract lycanthropy and vampirism. There you have three templates stacked on a single base creature, either an ogre or a giant. There are other possibilities, but this is just an example. |
| irzg9zh3psgq3m0903-05-06, 10:06 PM | I found a creature in the MM that may have answered my question. A lammasu is a magical beast but a Golden Protector is a child of a celestial lammasu and a gold dragon, making it a half-celestial half-dragon creature. It does not specify who is mother or father but it is considered a celestial half-dragon lammasu. So I come to the conclusion that the base creature is the base creature of the celestial. A celestial human + dragon = celestial half-dragon human and a fiendish ogre + dragon = fiendish half-dragon ogre. But oddly, the Golden Protector doesn't get much stronger than the lammasu, only a +5 on strength and not much on other stuff. I thought a half-celestial half-dragon would have gotten a +12 on strength. Maybe this is only a lammasu thing. |
