| Hullaballoo01-25-04, 11:21 PM | Alright my party is going to go up against a Green Dragon and we only know that the cave we are investing has a green dragon through gather information. I also know that there is a gelatinous cube somewhere. Right now our party consists of: Thalyr a 6th-level human sorcerer Galahad a 5th level half-elven fighter Aust a 6th level half-elven monk Dagger a 6th level halfling rogue And Quirion a 4th level elven cleric The last one is more of a man-slave to Galahad and Dagger is Thalyr's personal assistant (slave), but it’s all cool. They are once pc that quit, but the DM thought we should still have them in the party. Besides that I was just wondering if anyone has any advice to take on this dragon. We can't really go back to civilization b/c we are on a time limited that it would take too long to go back and our treasure will be gone by then, Its like a good 10 miles before we would reach the closest city. Any strategies on defeating this dragon would be helpful. I know the DM wants us to kill it but I don't know how we could survive after our last dragon encounter. (Basically we weren't suppose to win and we couldn't even attack) ~Hul-la-bal-loo |
| Kalrin01-25-04, 11:25 PM | can you get me the sorcerer's spell list, and a description of the terrain and the exact time limit you're dealing with?... I'm willing to come up with a plan, but I need the resources *Grin* |
| Hullaballoo01-25-04, 11:51 PM | All this is 3.0 Ok here's mine (Thalyr's spell list) 0~Light, Ghost Sound, Prestigitation, Detect Magic, Mending, Mage Hand, Disrupt Undead 1~Magic Missile, Mage Armor, Lesser Cold Orb, True Strike 2~Alter Self, Acid Arrow 3~Haste I'm more into specializing in Range Touch Attacks, and I'm going to take fighter->Eldritch Knight (3.5) levels Galahad the Fighter uses a Masterwork Bastard Sword. We are very low on magic items, but we have lots (about 57 various healing potions) and I think my DM is planning to give us some uber-magic weapons/items but we have to pay by not getting much other good items or gold. Anything else you would like to know, I'm already down by like 3 1st level spells for the day. Anyways we are at the beginning of the cave that we the dragon is in. I doubt its a very big cave, considering what I know, long, but not tall. We can't leave the cave b/c we about the day to beat it (sorry for the video game lingo) so no sleeping or retreating. I don't know what the cleric has memorized. ~Hul-la-bal-loo |
| PhaedrusXY01-26-04, 12:05 AM | Well, since you say you don't have time for the cleric to go prepare spells specifically for it, and you don't have time to buy potions and stuff, there isn't alot of advice we can offer. Try to keep it on the ground, and get the cleric to cast Magic Weapon on the fighter's sword (I can't remember if dragons at this level have damage reduction yet or not, but I'd assume the worst). Also, try not to all be bunched up, so it can't catch you all in it's breath weapon. Very young dragons often live in groups so they can better defend themselves, also. So it might be possible that you won't just find one dragon... And if it is not an extremly young dragon, you are all dead anyway... First round cast Haste and use Alter Self to turn into something that can fly and try to stay far away from the dragon. Then use all of your other spell slots on Magic Missles or Cold Orbs. You'll be able to fire off two per round because of 3.0 Haste. Make sure the rogue is always in position to flank and get Sneak Attack dice, also. |
| Mitchell01-26-04, 12:46 AM | Definitely stay spread out. The fighter will have to close, so have the rogue come up opposite him for hopeful sneak attack damage. You may want to keep the cleric close to the fighter where they can attack the dragon, but heal the fighter also. Depending on the fighters ability to hit the dragon and the dragons ability to hit him, you may consider using the bastard sword 2-handed for the extra damage. The longer the fight lasts, the more likely the dragon wins. Your sorceror shouldn't have a hard time hitting with ranged touch, so acid arrow is your most damaging spell, use haste, then start throwing arrows until you are out of 2nd and 3rd spell slots, then go with magic missile from there. The monk may need to close as well, so I guess you could put them opposite the cleric, so that they will all recieve flanking bonuses. If it is very old you will have problems, but if it is young or younger it is doable. |
| Radagast01-26-04, 01:15 PM | One minor quibble - it's a Green, and they are immune to Acid, so no Acid Arrows. Basic idea is to keep it on the ground and don't let it hit you with the cone-shaped breath weapon. Any anti-acid buffs you can cast should be used - even Acid Resist of 5 is better than nothing. Also, note that Greens can breath underwater, and a crafty GM will use that fact against you, perhaps by grabbing up a heavily-armored Fighter-type, and diving underwater, holding him until he drowns, or just releasing him and let his his armor drag him to the bottom like a stone. Good luck! |
| Xarrith01-30-04, 02:02 PM | Though you're on a time limit, when you get to game night, it might be worth it to see if any of you have any spells memorized or skills available that will allow you to find out extra information about the dragon (and any other inhabitants; if there's one gelatinous cube hanging around in there, there could be other nasty jelly kinds--some of them can destroy metal!). Finding out extra information about the beast and the other creatures around could be helpful in choosing your buff spells. Additionally, knowledge checks to find out what your characters know about cubes would be useful. Since knowledge checks can often yield information that you, the player, did not know, that could be helfpul. |
| Hullaballoo01-30-04, 03:59 PM | Thanks for all of the response, I have a few more things to say. 1) I'm not worried about the cubes we have battled them before, I believe 2 before we hit 3rd level. 2) I talked to my DM today about our next session and he's like "Your all going to die!" well he wouldn't tell me any more about it, but I have a felling that this is one of those times where you can't win. But I'm going to do my best just to prove him wrong. But since he's the DM that proably won't happen. 3) I'm that's all for now, thanks for the advice so far. PS my DM could be lying for all I know. |
| primemover00301-30-04, 04:28 PM | Of course the DM is going to tell you you're all gonna die... it's his job to build suspense (unless he's a total egomaniac and plans on a TPK). My PC's just got through a battle with a Very Old Red. They were sorely underpowered to take it on. Only the Barbarian, the ranger, and the spellslingers could do anything to it (and everyone was rolling poorly). I knew it would be deadly coming into it and choose to "forget" many of the combat options Dragons have. But my PC's still manage to surprise me. They rushed into it's treasure horde and Wall of Forced themselves in. Because I had a Forbiddance spell in place they could not T-port away... but they did have a Staff of earth and stone that they used to tunnel out of the chamber. Once they were far enough out of the Forbiddance affect they could t-port away WITH the Horde stuffed into every bag of holding they had (as well as some coffers and a big sarcophagus). Be creative. You may just surprise the DM. |
