I was thinking back a few days ago with an old role playing buddy of mine on some times wishes had gone wrong. It started me wondering about what sorts of stories you all out there might have.

How has the DM turned your purposeful Wish into something you didn't mean, or what might have happened when you had a Wish item on your person but forgot and the words "I wish..." came up in conversation?

I have 2. The first was in a deserted town that was overrun by undead. We were clueless as to what had happened here or where the treasure was we were looking for. (I am still not sure why we were there. ) One member of our party found a sword with a wish on it. He held it up and said :embarrass "I wish to know what the hell is going on here." A booming voice spoke... :P "You are standing in the street holding a sword. Zombies are coming." That wasn't even the first time this player had ever used a Wish. :(

My second story is about an accidental Wish. I had an item and was sving it "for a really needful situation." Well, I forgot I had it, of course. Then I was having a sweet conversation with the princess my fighter was going to marry. She talked about the rogue who had broken her heart in the past. I said "I wish he were here so I could punch him in the face." (poof) There was a man in his pajamas suddenly standing in front of us with a surprised look on his face. "Aw crap! I wasted that Wish! Oh well, might as well make the most of the chance..." So I punched him.

happened to me a year ago (first time i could use a wish). I had found a magic item with one wish, but, alas, did not know that (ingame AND outgame)...well, a few minutes later, my dwarven fighter was kinda bored...and he said (exact words): "I wish for a bigger monster to fight."
DM: "You see an evergrowing shadow appearing right beneath you..."
That thing (never found out what it was) killed the whole party...they don't allow me to make wishes anymore :evillaugh

Sounds like your DM is a sadistic jerk. Why give out Wishes if you're going to pervert something as simple as a divination. It's not like he asked for "access to all Druid spells at will, with no limit on uses per day" (like someone I know).

I've played with such a DM before, and I never play into his sadistic games any more. He hands out Wishes at low levels to mess with greedy players for fun, but I've learned my lesson. Now I only ever Wish for inherent bonuses to my primary ability score, nothing for him to pervert. He always seems so disapointed, just like when none of us will touch any magical decks of cards any more.

This is why I'm very glad the PHB has a list of unshaftable wishes. The spell description specifically states that the DM is not supposed to mess with wishes that fall within those guidelines.

Yet another vast improvement 3rd Edition has over the previous ones.

When i DM it depends on the source of the wish.

Got a wish from a celestial by his own free will?
Goes smooth as.. well, not hell but really perfect..

Celestial that was forced somehow? A genie? An item?
Kinda like the DMG handles it.

From a devil, demon, something else you dont want to know about?
Twist the intent of the wish as much as you can, carefull wording is advised, needed, a MUST... =)

That DM = jerk off on a power trip.

I do believe the ring takes an action to activate, which merely saying the words is not.

As a DM, I'll only twist a wish if the player is trying to be abusive, or they're accepting it from something they shouldn't be (devil, demon, etc.) If the wish is rather normal it almost always goes through. If the wish is used in a non-selfish way, it almost always goes through. If it's used in a minorly selfish way, then it almost always goes through.

See, I can :censored: up a party without resorting to such a cop-out as "you worded it incorrectly". Perhaps it's because I understand what a limitation words can be in conveying an idea or desire. Perhaps I'm just not that big a dick, to grant something so nice, then screw them over with it in the old cliched manner. These twisted wishes stories have been around for the 17 years I've been gaming, and they always result in one egomaniac slapping down someone to make himself feel better.

Two stories about DMs that did this.

First one, the player wished for... a ham sandwich, using up his mandatory wish, must be used immediately.

Other one, the player got the ring of 3 wishes, in a party of 5. During the ensuing arguement he wished for...
Wheat! Fields and fields of wheat!
*Other players howled with anger, disgust, and before they could react...
Locusts! A swarm of locusts to devour all the wheat!
*Then they started to get mad, but before they could wrest the ring away from him...
Chocolate! Chocolate as far as the eye can see!

And they cornered the market on chocolate covered locusts.

Cheers

Otto :)

Funny that you should bring up wishes granted by demons...

In one campaign I played in, I was the despot ruler (Ftr16, no choice in class, but I get to be 8 levels higher than the rest of the party) of a new town. We know we've got a looong list of enemies and we're looking for any allies we can get.

One day, a storm giant wanders into town, looking for a weapon of awesome power with which to smite his enemies. I happen to have some connections in that department and offer to procure one for him if he will wait a fortnight for it.

So we're on the trail when out of the blue, a band of demons pops out of no where, demanding payment lest they destroy us where we stand. Here's where my massive stupidity comes into play. I pay thier leader a pitance, convincing him that its all I can spare (thank you skill familiarity feat and natural 19 bluff roll). He asks what we're here for and I decide to explain the situation...

Eventually, we work out a deal, partially to save time, partially becuse I have a good feeling these demons are about to smote us anyways. The deal is that I pay this demon five of these rare crystals that can be used for some cool meta-magic goodness (the giant gave us 12 to buy the sword with) and he provides us with a giant-sized sword of awesome power...

Oh, if only I had turned back then...

As soon as I hand him the crystals, the disappears and the sword manifests before us. Its a giant-sized greatsword with obvious magical abilities... and... its oozing an ichorous black substance that eats right through the ground beneath it

Oh, what good times were had after that. This deal took place near a river that supplied water for several major towns, and this black stuff was seeping into the ground very quickly... we had several magic users in the group (druid, wizard, and sorcerer) and we tried just about everything imaginable.

With my massive strength, I manage to just barely pick the sword up by the hilt (the only part that isn't oozing this stuff) so the rest of the party can make futile attempts to stop the oozing.

Funneling the goo into a bag of holding worked for about two minutes, now we have several bags of holding filled with toxic black goo.

Earth to Stone made a small basin in the ground, now we have several kiddy-pools filled with condensed evil.

Eventually, we have to call back the demon, who offered to sell us the scabard for the remaining seven crystals, as well as most of the gold we had on hand :weep:

On the upshot, the giant rather liked the sword and we're pretty sure he's just cutting a bloody swath through whoever it was he wanted to brutally murder :)

I can still vividly remember the time we got our hands on a ring of three wishes.

The first wish saved us from a room slowly filling with water (and made us aware of the power in the ring). Then we later tried to use the ring to find the last party-member by wishin for the guy we where seaching for. That very simple wish backfired butifuly as we had also been searching for a vampire and (poof) there was the vampire. After dispathing the vapire we tried again with a very long and convoluted wish to get our comrade back. And this time we got his future self crashing his huge gold dragon mount in our back yard. (We were about levels 3-5 iirc). All in all an enjoyable three wishes

Since I generally play low-level campaigns I rarely encounter wishes, but when I do I usually use them wisely and my DMs are generally not looking for a big ****-over for the party.

I don't think bringing a monster to the group after it was wished for , even inadvertantly, is taking a power trip. The PHB lists the components as V, XP. The XP was paid by the items creator, so the only thing needed to activate the Wish is the verbal component. No group I have ever played with has had that be other than the words "I wish..." I think this happened exactly as it should have. Same with the exboyfriend and the punch.

As far as the "perverted divination" well, I don't remember 2e having all those nifty listings of what a wish can do, mimicking spells and all. We always just had DMs always try to twist things, that was the danger of casting Wish. I will see if I can find the long abandoned AD&D 2e PHB to reread for sure. Not that it really matters. And I am sorry...he didn't say "I am using this wish to cast a divination to find out what happened to this village." He said "I wish I knew what the heck is going on here."

I agree that a DM should not hand out Wish items willy-nilly. That is a VERY powerful spell. To do it to try to mess with low level players is STUPID. It is too easy for them to get what they want if they have any sense at all. There are better ways to screw with people.

Wishes are fun. I think they, better than almost anything, show how magic can be useful but should not be taken lightly. That is, if it is used creatively. If all you are going to do is mimic a lower level spell, well, ...yawn.

Viny, I honestly think you take things too literally. To me, if someone wished something that was fufilliable by a wish, then it should be fulfilled. You shouldn't have to explicitly state every single detail. For instance, I think that saying, "I wish to know what is going to happen next." is better than, "I wish I could cast a spell that would let me know what's going to happen next." Both accomplish the same end, yet the first one is more succinct.

my party had three wishes once...3 players 3 wishes...

Player 1( Fighter/cleric):" I wish for a bigger magic weapon"
Dm:" PoooF magic weapon appears"
Player1: NICE!!!
Player 2( me being a wizard): i wish to be able to endure more pain
Dm: * HP increased*
* so far so good right?...dm was being nice*
Player 3* (barbarian 22 con): Dude why didn't you wish for all of us to have that wish?!
Dm: poooff all of us had more hp

It wasn't that bad after all..but still he wasted his wish since he really didn't need anymore HP

My greatest wish story. This took place many years ago in 1st edition. I was running a game and the players thought they were invincible and got a wild hair up there. They wanted to off Grazz't. They were powerful and had a reputation as demon slayers. When they arrived they were astonished and frightened to be granted an audiance with Grazz't and his court. Needless to say combat ensued and the party was on the losing end. One mage was entangled ina balors whip and many others were down. The escape plan went something like this. The cleric would planeshift out with everybody except the wizard that was entagled in the balors whip and the other wizard that was still doing well. The freed wizard would then wish himself and the other wizard away. Step 1 worked without a hitch. Step 2 was a little different. In first edition wishes were granted by the closest greater power. Also in first edition, demon princes were considered greater powers on their on layer.

Wizard 1: "Get me out of here"
Wizard 2: I jump on him and wish us both out of here.
Grazz't: "I don't think so"
Wizard 1 and 2: Crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Everebody in the room: (O)(O)

That is when they learned, not to bite the hand that feeds them.

We found a deck of many things and one of the other characters drew a card. My character became an enemy of his from the card without him knowing it. Then MY character drew a card and got a wish, immediately wishing that HIS character had to draw TEN cards! :evillaugh ..... It was NOT a fun day for his character.

We've learned not to put on any rings, or anything that may be magical without first casting identify. And before making a wish our DM encourages us to write it down so nothing can go wrong. Now our DM is good about not screwing us over on wishes as long as it's not for something beyond belief. True story here, our thief/cleric wished for the entire party to have all the magical abilities of a mature gold dragon. So of course our DM turned the entire party into one big gold dragon. We had to get a greater wish from the gods to undo it. So if you get a wish, write down in one simple sentience what you want it to do, read it twice, then wish for it.

Here's a question: What would happen if I said, "I wish for you not to grant this wish." Would the world implode?

I, a red wizard archmage, and my slav- I mean, companions walk into a room full of treasure. As I scrounge around, I find a peculiar box with a scarab inside. I focus my concentration to determine which type of magical auras are present. There aren't any. I pick up the scarab and notice at once that as I bring it out of the box it begins to radiate magic. As I again focus my concentration on it, it abruptly comes to life and digs into my skin, crawl up my arm, into my head, and kills me.

Now, my druid companion sees everything and comments, "I wish he never picked up that scarab." He coincidentally was holding a luck blade (he didn't realize it) at the time. Time stops.

As I scrounge around, I find a peculiar box with a scarab inside. I focus my concentration to determine which type of magical auras are present. There aren't any. As I bring my hand inside to pick up the scarab, my hand passes right through it. I tilt the box upside down and it falls out. I notice it radiates magic, but not the auras similar to those that shape illusions. I command my apprentice/cohort to pick it up. He does so, and the scarab promptly kills him. I remain confused to this day why I am unable to touch this death-dealing scarab.

One of our players (that blabs anything that comes to mind), was the lucky recipient of a wish after a long battle. Everyone told him to THINK about what he wanted. After a good 4-5 minutes the DM presses the issue.
DM: (impatiently) What are you thinking about?
Player: Death
DM: Who/what are you thinking about?
Player: (looks around the room) Mike
DM: Mike, your dead

I'm sorry, but no good DM will let you use a wish on a deck of many things. I won't even let players use a wish to get a DoMT. Mostly because it can provide more wishes. So for that same reason I won't let them wish for a luck sword.

ive got a very simple rule.. wishes cant affect themselves or the items that the wish is coming from..

my most memorable wish that i had..

8th level rogue who was forced to run out of town.. (left all my items at the inn and was scouting out a potential mark for a job.. didnt want to draw attention to myself by walking around with weapons and armor on...)

anyway.. the mark leaves his house durring my scouting mission (lucky break.. ) and i take the oportunity to scout the house out .. inside i pick up a deck of many things thinking they were a marked deck of cards.. i had flipped up the first card and took a peak... it happened to be the wish card.. i rolled a 1 and got 2 wishes ..anyway i didnt know it at the time.. the dm had rolled for me..

needless to say i had to get out of there fast as the mark was coming home and caught me going through his stuff.. the pursing chase was fun and exciting. (nothing says getting away scott free like having the guards chasing you through a crowd and you throw up a bag of gold coins worth about a 1000 gold.. (Scattering the money in the air) kinda gives people an incentive to mob the area.. :P)

climbed over the city wall got out.. hid in the woods for several hours.. seen that the guards were still hunting for me pretty hard.. figured i would leave the area... said these words.."damn this sucks. all my stuff is at the inn ..i wanna go in and get it because otherwise i gotta start all over." DM asked me what i wanted to do .. i said well i wish i had all my stuff back... i got everything back.. and i mean everything.. somewhere in about a pile 30 foot high and weighing roughly 2 tons.. (i was a half elf) all my stuff that i had owned at one point or the other in my life.. had appeared over my head... it litterally was raining items... this caused quite a commotion as people started pointing i lit off out of the area and had to flee.. (getting chased on horseback sucks when your weaponless and have been up all night)

I too laughed at that...first thought, "If you planeshit out, does it leave a trail?"

"Where did they go?"
"The sneaky ones planeshitted out!"
"Hey, they left one heck of a trail...we can easily follow them with my scent ability"

Player: I wish I couldn't be harmed by weapons.
DM: OK you're dead. Now you can't be harmed by weapons.
Player: I wish to remain young forever.
DM: OK you are now frozen in time.
Player: I wish for a deck of many things with only good cards.
DM: Like that would happen. But let's say it did. Two decks appear before you. One has only the good cards and the other has only the bad cards. Now, pick a deck and tell me how many cards you want.

Player: I wish to always score a critical hit.
DM: You got it.
Player: I hit that monster.
DM: Roll percentile. Let me know if you get under 10.
Player: I rolled a 7
DM: Roll again. 50/50
Player: I rolled 43%
DM You just critically hit yourself.
